SPORTS IMPHAL TUESDAY 21 OCTOBER 2014 TRAU cruise into MSL final TRAU and TRUGPU players battle for the ball possession By Our Sports Reporter IMPHAL, Oct 20 : Tiddim Road Athletic Union (TRAU), Kwakeithel booked a berth in the final after defeating Tiddim Road Unique Gammy Players' Union (TRUGPU), Nambol by a margin of 4 goals to two in the ongoing 9th Manipur State League organised by All Manipur Football Association (AMFA) under the sponsorship of MLA Khumukcham Joykishan Singh at Mapal Kangjeibung, Imphal. In today's semi final clash, TRUGPU were dominated by the TRAU players who went out on the attack from the first minute. Soon after the kick off, TRAU took the lead when its defender A Herojit struck home an early goal in the 3rd minute off a curling freekick from L Bikram. TRAU's S Ratan slotted another goal to help his team take a comfortable 2-0 lead in the 23rd minute of the match. Minutes later TRAU's L Bikram successfully converted a defence splitting cross from defender A Herojit to make the scoreline 3-0 in the 27th minute. On the other hand, with 3 goals down TRUGPU however did not give up and put more men in the attack and started making inroads into the territory of TRAU. The offensive style paid dividends when M Robinson scored to reduce the margin in the 37th minute. The first half ended with TRAU leading the match by 3-1. After the lemon break, TRUGPU continued with its offensive style and tried to come back into the match. The efforts of TRUGPU seemed to pay off when N Rakesh netted another goal in the 79th minute to bring down the margin. However, TRAU kept up with their game and Kh Naoton slammed home the fourth goal to register a convincing win against TRUGPU. TRAU's L Gouro, M Meina, S Ratan and TRUGPU's Kh Keneth and P Romesh were cautioned with the yellow card during the match. Peter, 23, fell backwards on his head as he took a series of somersaults after scoring an equaliser for his Aizwal-based team Bethlehem Vengthlang FC in a Mizoram Premier League match. He was a native of Khawzawl town in Mizoram. Peter’s team was trailing Chanmari West FC by a goal for 62 minutes when the midfielder scored the equaliser. He celebrated with a series of somersaults, landing on his head and remained on the ground in pain. He was carried off the field and admitted to the Aizawl Civil Hospital. His team lost the match 2-3. All attempts to repair his spinal cord at the hospital failed and he passed away Sunday. Footballers often injure themselves while celebrating a goal, but there is no record of overzealous celebration causing death of players. –– Agencies Pallikal, Harinder Pal win squash challenger titles MUMBAI, Oct 20 Ace woman squash player Dipika Pallikal and Asian Games gold medallist Harinder Pal Singh on Sunday won titles in their respective categories at the JSW Squash Challenger Circuit here. In the final matches here, they defeated their Egyptian counterparts in straight games. In the woman’s draw, the Incheon Games bronze medallist Pallikal got the better of her opponent Nouran El Torky 14-12 12-10 11-7 in a contest that lasted 46 minutes. “Nouran was a great competition and I enjoyed playing with her after such a long time. I am very happy to win the circuit in front of the home crowd, and the fact that this is my first tour title of the year, it is all the more special,” said the jubilant 23-year-old squash star from Chennai. In the men’s draw, Sandhu made a remarkable comeback in the first game and sealed the result in his favour by pipping Egypt’s Shehab Essam Hosny 11-9 11-7 117 in 50 minutes. The 25-year-old scored the first point in the opening game but soon trailed 7-1. Saivom Youth Club (SYC) defeated FC Khannou by a margin of five goals to three in the men's football final match while Independent Girls downed Sporting Club TPL in the senior girls' football final match. In the senior boys' volleyball final, PR K (B) outplayed PRK (A) to claim the champions' title while PR (A) stunned Independent Girls in the senior girls' volleyball final. Altogether 36 teams from Tengoupal subdivision in Chandel district participated in the sports meet. Kuki Women's Union (KWU) Headquarters vice president Avei Haokip graced the closing function as chief guest and distributed the prizes to the team champions. Children camp cum sports meet concludes By Our Sports Reporter IMPHAL, Oct 20 : The 44th Children Camp cum Sports Meet, 2014 of Model English School, Sinakeithei Ukhrul District concluded on October 18. The function was graced by ATSUM president Muan Tombing and Manipur film actor Gokul Singh as chief guest and guest of honour respectively. Muan Tombing sponsored the sports goods and gave Rs 2000 to the school during the function. Altogether 900 people including students, parents and spectators attended the function. FLAME House clinched the overall team title of the championship while SPARKS House and Torch House claimed the the runners up title, informed a release issued by Model English School, Sinakeithei Ukhrul District. Champions warmly received By Our Sports Reporter IMPHAL, Oct 20 : Two police officers, who brought laurels not only to the Manipur Police Department but also to the State by winning different medals in the recently concluded 18th All India Police Golf Tournament, were warmly received by DGP Shahid Ahmad at his office chamber today. Jail SP Gon Lian Mang and Home Guards Commandant Y Ashokkumar represented the State Police Department in the tournament, held in Bangalore from October 14 to 16. Manipur police won nine medals in different individual events, out of which seven were bagged by Ashokkumar and two by Gon Lian Mang. More than 100 police personnel from the State police and Central paramilitary forces took part in the tournament.
