WELCOME! Dear Friends, On behalf of the Central Florida Orchid Society and our neighbors here in Central Florida, I would like to welcome you to the 2014 Fall American Orchid Society Members’ Meeting and 16th International Slipper Orchid Symposium. Our dedicated volunteers and AOS staff have worked very hard to make this a wonderful experience for you and your families. I hope you have time to explore Central Florida, including its famous Space Coast, the world’s most famous beach, Daytona Beach, plus many other attractions in and around Orlando including Universal Studios and Disneyworld. Our local society members are delighted to offer recommendations and assistance in locating excellent restaurants near our meeting venue, tickets and transportation to many of our worldfamous attractions in the area, or just a little guidance in finding your way around the event venue. I am confident you will enjoy yourself here in Central Florida and hope to see you come back year after year for our annual International Slipper Orchid Symposium. Happy Growing, Frank Smith, President American Orchid Society PS: Save the Date for our Spring 2015 Meeting! This meeting will be hosted by the Portland Orchid Society and cohosted by the Cherry City Orchid Society from April 29 - May 3, 2015 in Portland, Oregon. 1 OUR GUEST LECTURERS Orchid growers still talk about Phragmipedium kovachii as if it were discovered yesterday, due to the impact of the flower size and beauty as well as the stories that proliferated after the publication of the species. Additional intrigue arises because the species has not been well adapted in culture and we are all still struggling to grow this wonderful slipper orchid well. Through many analyses of the original soil and water and through the comparison of the chemical data in growing Phragmipedium kovachii for more than 11 years so far, this presentation will please growers willing to uncover the mysteries of growing this huge slipper orchid, as well as the other members of the Phragmipedium genus. Manolo Arias graduated as an artist at the Catholic University in Lima Peru, with a Master degree in Industrial Design from North Carolina State University. His current full-time occupation is working everyday as an Orchid grower. Manolo's orchid growing efforts benefit from his design and artistic background, as well as from his passion to achieve high standards of production and exceptional quality. The same passion helped him to be a Fulbright scholar in the United States between 2002 and 2004. Winner of many design competitions worldwide, and with scholarships in other countries including Japan, Belgium and the United Kingdom, he feels very proud to be exposed to international environments that inspire him to improve the work he leads in the Orchid propagation and conservation in Peru. Since 2004 Manolo has worked as the head manager of Peruflora, a brand owner of 5 production locations distributed in the Peruvian central forest, being able to grow plants from sea level up to 8000 feet above sea level. Mr. Chen will speak about "Multifloral Paphiopedilums in Taiwan." He will show us outstanding species and hybrids from the best hybridizers and growers in his country. Chen-Chung Chen is the owner of Mainshow Orchids in Taiwan. He is well known for his breeding program of top quality species and hybrids and has been growing and propagating orchids for over 30 years. Mr. Chen is also a TOGA judge and has served as the Judging Chair of the prestigious Taiwan International Orchid Show. Mr. Chen is a perennial favorite at our symposium due to his fascinating presentations and the superior quality plants that he makes available for purchase 2 OUR GUEST LECTURERS Paphiopedilum sanderianum is a legendary species amongst the 80 or so paph species coveted and collected by orchid growers around the world. It can be both exasperating and exhilarating to grow, slow to establish and resentful of mistreatment, yet just stunning when content. In this talk for the 16th International Slipper Orchid Symposium, John will review a current snapshot of its impact on multifloral breeding, as well as a few key cultural elements that have led him to win 10 of the 22 AOS awards ever given to this species. That list includes the highest quality award to date, the only Certificate of Cultural Excellence (CCE), as well as the only Award of Quality (AQ) to a group of 12 blooming plants. John Doherty lives in Windsor, Canada with his wife Nicole and two daughters Jordyn and Madelyn. He joined the AOS judging program at the age of 20, and did his university undergraduate thesis on tissue culture of Cypripedium (it does not work, FYI). He has judged and lectured around the world and enjoys connecting with other enlightened orchid growers who have also come to favor Paphs. He does own a few other orchids including Cynorkis, Disa, Phrags, New Guinea Dendrobiums and even a Phalaenopsis, however he asks that you not hold it against him. Botanists have been describing, naming and renaming vandaceous orchids for more than 200 years. Breeders have registered thousands of hybrids between plants of these closely related genera. Recent nomenclatural changes for many species, the resulting loss of many familiar genera, and the effects on hybrid names have produced much confusion and many questions. Robert Fuchs is a third-generation orchid grower, and president of R.F. Orchids, Inc., in Homestead, Florida, USA. The nursery was founded in 1970. In 1984, R.F. Orchids’ Vanda Deva ‘Robert’ AM/AOS-SM/11WOC was named the Grand Champion of the 11th World Orchid Conference in Miami. A recognized expert on vandaceous orchids, Bob presents lectures to audiences around the world, and his articles have been published in many prestigious publications. Bob Fuchs is an accredited American Orchid Society Judge, past president of the South Florida Orchid Society, life member of the AOS, and was President of the 19th World Orchid Conference, in 2008. He was inducted into the Florida Agriculture Hall of Fame in 2013, the first orchid grower to be so honored. 3 OUR GUEST LECTURERS Mr. Lin will speak on novelty phalaenopsis hybridizing. This group of phalaenopsis is most rewarding for orchid hobbyists due to their compact size, frequent flowering, brilliant color and fragrance. In this talk he will showcase the best novelty phalaenopsis hybrids today, and review their best breeding attributes to create better, more colorful novelty phalaenopsis for tomorrow. Peter Lin is an orchid enthusiast who has been growing orchids for over 25 years (since the age of 10). Originally from Taiwan, Peter came to the United States at the age of 12 and found his passion in collecting and hybridizing phalaenopsis orchids. Peter graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Sciences and has worked in the Information Technology industry for 12 years. To pursue his passion and expand and upgrade his phalaenopsis collection, Peter turned his orchid growing into hybridizing and launched Big Leaf Orchids - a family owned, mail-order operation in Southlake, Texas. Named after the pretty and round leaves of phalaenopsis, Big Leaf Orchids specializes in phalaenopsis, with emphasis on novelty to include fragrant, waxy and multi-colored flowers. Peter makes frequent trips to Taiwan to personally see the latest phalaenopsis developments, and to learn from Taiwanese nurseries and phalaenopsis hybridizers. In that never ending quest for culture perfection, growers look for clues in both the environmental or ecological realm, and the agriculture sciences realm. The predominant information obtained from eco/enviro. sources are generally limited to physical parameters like temperature, light, and humidity. Chemical data from ecological sources is often fragmentary or at scale not applicable to orchid growers. The information obtained from the agriscience community dominates our feeding application regimes, but is primarily based on high turnover food crop and ornamental cultivars. Rick’s quest has found evidence that indicates that the chemical environment of in situ orchids is considerably different from the cultivation standards for the food crop and ornamental plants that many of us have modeled our feeding programs after. While still integrating basic agri-science principles, he has also found that reconfiguring the application of macronutrients (N P K Ca & Mg) to more eco relevant concentrations can dramatically improve orchid culture, especially for sensitive species. Rick Lockwood is an environmental toxicologist for ENVIRON International, where he is a managing scientist for the aquatic toxicology division of the Nashville, Tennessee office. He has focused on salt (in particular, potassium) toxicity issues since 2005. His wife, Robin, rekindled his love of orchids in 2001, and has since been passionately pursuing the study of species orchid culture, breeding and conservation. He is an active and past office holder of the Orchid Society of Middle Tennessee and a major contributor on the Slippertalk orchid forum. Slipper orchids are his favorite, but it took almost 10 years before he “got it right” to the point where he is achieving AOS awards with his favorite flowers. 4 OUR GUEST LECTURERS Gary Meyer, PhD is a neuroscientist by training, cancer researcher by trade, and Dracula-addict by fate. Gary has been growing and studying Draculas in greenhouses, herbariums, labs, and in the wild since he was a teenager. Gary spends several months every year in the Colombian and Ecuadorian Andes hunting the monster pleurothallid in its element. He will discuss aspects of Dracula culture, taxonomy, and why he goes "ape" on you if you call them "monkey orchids." David Off was born into the family orchid business in 1979. He grew up in a home on property adjacent to the greenhouses. Dave has been taught in a “hands-on” environment from an early age. He is currently Assistant Greenhouse Manager for Waldor Orchids. The Off family has been growing plants since 1925. In addition to his personal collection, David oversees the care and maintenance of Waldor’s renowned classic cattleya collection. David married his wife Sarah in 2002. They have two sons, Daniel and Clayton, who are being cultivated as the fourth generation of orchid growers. 5 Show Committee & Volunteers Event Co-Chairs Eileen & Julio Hector Show Admissions Marjorie Scarlett Event Committee Laura Newton Lois Posey Karen Wilson Colleen Wold Show Set-Up & Teardown Connie & Herb Fox Event Registration Gladys Garcia-Greenberg Eileen Hector Laura Newton Judging Chair Lois Posey AOS Auction Jennifer Reinoso Karen Wilson Web Design Scott Ware Show Chairman Ed Gilliland Show Program & Schedule Doris Dukes Julio Hector Laura Newton Ken Roberts Affiliated Society Displays Central Florida Orchid Society Mid Lakes Orchid Society Ridge Orchid Society Tallahassee Orchid Society Venice Area Orchid Society Volusia County Orchid Society Vendor & Exhibit Staging Eileen & Julio Hector Clerking Chair Mary Pinkham Plant Registration & Identification Shirley Robinson Colleen Wold Trophies Ed Gilliland Advertising Frank Dasse Claudia Walworth Awards Photography Greg Allikas Trophy Sponsors Participating Organizations Florida North Central Judging Region and its Affiliated Societies International Phalaenopsis Alliance Carlos Fighetti, President Cathy Rider, 1st Vice President Barbara Noe, 2nd Vice President Tom Harper, Immediate Past President Olie Garrison,Treasurer Karen Armstrong, Recording Secretary Lynn Fuller, Membership Secretary Pleurothallid Alliance Joseph Parker, President Gary Meyer, Vice President Lynn O'Shaughnessy, Secretary and Treasurer John Leathers, Editor Kathy Creger, Past President Central Florida Orchid Society Florida West Coast Orchid Society Gainesville Orchid Society Mid Lakes Orchid Society Slipper Orchid Alliance Monroe J.
