Music and Memory Program
The County has teamed up with Jewish Family Services to help provide iPod Shuffles, and iTunes cards
for seniors in nursing facilities. This is an amazing program, and will benefit the lives of many, many
seniors. Soon there will be a video released on Netflix that was shown at Sundance Film Festival about
the benefits of music called Alive Inside. Once this movie is available we will have a screening here at the
center. We will be collecting donations for this group. If you’d like to donate, please see a staff member.
Music has a way of moving our souls. Along with us donating to the Jewish Family Services, we wanted
to incorporate fun music you love here at the center. We’ve made a signup sheet where you can write the
names of some of your favorite songs. When we don’t have an event going on, we want to play the music
throughout the senior center.
Book Club
Please note this class is a week later than usual. Tuesday, October 14th, at 12:30 p.m., we will be
discussing, The Girl’s Guide to Love and Supper Clubs by Dana Bate.
During the month of October we will be reading the book, Blackberry Winter by Sarah Jio. The book takes
place in Seattle, 1933. Vera Ray kisses her three-year-old son, Daniel, goodnight and reluctantly leaves
for work. She hates the nightshift, but it’s the only way she can earn enough to keep destitution at bay. In
the morning—even though it’s the second of May—a heavy snow is falling. Vera rushes to wake Daniel,
but his bed is empty. His teddy bear lies outside in the snow.
Seattle, present day. On the 2nd of May, Seattle Times reporter, Claire Hanson, awakens to another lateseason snowstorm. Assigned to cover this “blackberry winter” and its predecessor decades earlier, Claire
learns of Daniel’s unsolved abduction and vows to unearth the truth—only to discover that she and Vera
are linked in unexpected ways.

Managers Message
If you compare this picture to the one in September’s newsletter, you will notice a lot of progress
has taken place. This is the back entrance looking east. The contractor is working very hard to
get all the steel girders up in hopes to get the decking up so they can pour the second floor. All
the concrete is poured on the first floor. The brick layers plan on being complete by the end of
September with the completion of the fireplace in the social area. The building is really taking
shape and it will give you a better feel for the size of the building. We continue to be on schedule with completion June, 2015. If you have some ideas for the ribbon cutting in July, 2015, talk
to Amy or myself.
The City will be busy installing the parking lot and driveway that we will share with the City Center. The New City Hall should have it ribbon cutting this month. We will take a bus or two there
to support their opening. More information on this will be forth coming.
I have a request: if you are going to have lunch with us when you come in, please let Janet
know you are eating lunch. We serve on first come first serve basis and we do not want to have
someone who came in early for lunch not get a meal as we order a week in advance.

us who appear to have difficulty recovering from them. Join us Tuesday, October 7 th, at 10:00 a.m. to
