Karas, Weekend Liturgies Small Steps to Stewardship: Synod Focuses on Family Life Cindy Nau, Stewardship Director Today, Pope Francis will close the Third Extraordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops which convened on October 5th in Vatican City. The theme was “The pastoral challenges of the family in the context of evangelization.” What does that mean to us: Catholics in Boca Raton, Florida, USA? According to the Code of Canon Law (the ecclesiastical laws governing the Church), a General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops is called "Extraordinary" when it is convened to deal with matters "which require a speedy solution” and which demand "immediate attention for the good of the entire Church.” We should all agree that the secular demands and challenges on the family and family life make this gathering of select Bishops (four from the United States) timely and most necessary. The secular press, ignorant of Church teaching, has had a field day with the ideas and quotes coming out of this synod, speculating on the “big changes to come” on topics such as divorce and remarriage, homosexuality, co-habitation and marriage outside the Church. It is important that we, as Catholics, get our “news from the synod” from CATHOLIC news sources to get the authentic discussions that have come from this gathering. This Extraordinary Synod on the Family is just the beginning of the dialogue that will resume again at the XIV Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops on the Family in October, 2015. Catholic news sources can be found on EWTN (Eternal Word Television Network), ncronline.org (National Catholic Reporter), www.news.va (Official Vatican network), and www.usccb.org (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops). On October 11th, Pope Francis tweeted “The spiritual power of the Sacraments is boundless. With grace, we can overcome every obstacle.” This meeting of select Bishops and their continued dialogue next year on the issues facing family life will not change Church teaching on the sanctity of human life, marriage and family, but it has opened a path for mercy and understanding. Cardinal Peter Erdo, Vatican General Rapporteur, presenting the Midterm report on the Synod (www.news.va), concluded by saying: “In imitating Jesus’ merciful gaze, the Church must accompany her most fragile sons and daughters marked by wounded and lost love.” (Sources for this article: www.usccb.org, www.news.va, ncronline.org) Priesthood Sunday Please join together with the Serra Club of South Palm Beach County next Sunday, October 26th, “Priesthood Sunday,” in praying for our priests and in praising God for their courage and their generosity. You are urged to make your appreciation for your priests known. A letter of thanks, a thank you card, or a thoughtful gift to assure them of your love and gratitude for their presence in the life of your Ascension parish will go a long way to serve the greater good of our wonderful parish. The “Lucky Bus” Rides Again! Fr. Robert White from Food for the Poor will speak at all Masses next weekend, October 25/26. Food for the Poor feeds hundreds of thousands of people every day in 17 countries throughout the Caribbean and Latin America. Patriotic Rosary Members of the Respect Life Ministries from area Catholic Churches will recite the Patriotic Rosary at 1:30 p.m. Friday, October 24 in the chapel at Ascension. A fellowship will follow in the Family Center. Participation in the monthly recitation of this beautiful rosary for the consecration of our nation is growing. Everyone is welcome. Recitation is rotated each month among Ascension, St. Joan of Arc and St. Lucy Churches. 2014 Candidate Questionnaire Project: An Informed Voter is a Responsible Voter NEW DATE! The U.S. Bishops remind us, “In the Catholic Tradition, responsible citizenship is a virtue, and participation in political life is a moral obligation.” To help parishioners become informed on where candidates stand on key issues, the Florida Conference of Catholic Bishops has polled those running for U.S. Congress, the Florida Legislature, and Florida Governor. To see how candidates appearing on the November 4 General Election ballot responded to the questionnaire, visit www.flaccb.org/CQP/2014. All Souls Day Novena of Masses Every year Catholics demonstrate their remembrance of deceased family members, friends, parishioners, etc. in November. All Souls Day, according to the ancient custom of the Church, is when we pray for those who have died. Being the Church of today, we continue this custom by listing on the envelopes the names of people we wish to remember in Masses during the month of November. Either take the provided envelope in your packet or use the ones which are provided at the church doors. Place them and your offering in the Offertory Collection basket when you return to Mass the following week. They will be placed on the altar November 2, where they will remain throughout the month. Your financial offering is deeply appreciated. Trunk or Treat and Costume Party!
