“GOD’S NOT DEAD”
FAZtor ‘s Notes
by Fr. Arnold Zamora
Our priests of the Archdiocese of San Francisco
had their annual Study Week last week. In previous years, we have this study week done in
two groups at the Vallambrosa Retreat Center in Menlo Park.
This year, all priests gathered together at St. Mary’s Cathedral.
The main theme or focus of our study week was Stewardship.
We are trustees of God’s gift. Pope Francis used the words
“Protector of God’s gift” which can better be understood as
“Caretaker of God’s gift.” We have to appreciate the gifts God
has given us however simple or little it may be and share it with
the community. I have never thought of this word “stewardship”
before. What was familiar to me growing up were the words
“stewardess” and “steward” like the men and women serving
and giving instructions inside the plane. I had so much admiration on these people. Now I realize that we can all be stewards
and stewardesses of God’s gifts.
If we receive gifts, we react with gratefulness. Gratitude is
the foundation of stewardship. A grateful person is moved to
share his gifts of time, talent and treasure. May we recognize
God’s gift in us, so we can be thankful and we will be moved to
share our gifts with our parish.
In the middle of our study week, I recognized joy as gifts
from God. For one thing, both the 49ers and Giants won their
respective games. We are expecting more joy of this type to
come in the future. Last Wednesday was the St. Mary’s Cathedral 2014 Assumpta Award Dinner. The recipients of this year’s
Assumpta award were Holy Name parishioners Maryanne and
John Murray. Congratulations Maryanne and John, you so deserve this award! We share the joys and we are proud of you!
This weekend is a joyous and fun-filled event for the young
people in our parish as we celebrate our Youth Ministry Kickoff.
Joining our youth ministry is one way of sharing the time, talent,
and treasure in the community. That’s also stewardship – a
disciple’s response.
Father O’Malley answers the phone:
“Hello, is this Father O’Malley?” a woman voices says.
”It is,” he replies.
“This is the IRS. Can you help us?”
“I can.”
“Do you know a Ted Houlihan?”
“I do.”
“Is he a member of your congregation?”
“He is.”
“Did he donate $10,000 to the church?”
“He will.”
WORDS AND ACTIONS
When people hear us speak God’s word, they marvel
at its beauty and power; when they see what little impact it has
on our daily lives, they laugh and poke fun at what we say.
- Anonymous second century Christian
The Second Vatican Council:
A 50th Anniversary Retrospective
By the twenty-first Ecumenical Council of the Catholic Church,
October 11, 1962-December 8, 1965; Edited by Jerry Back
Question: What does the Second Vatican Council teach about
economic inequalities related to both farming as well as worker
migration?
Answer from Gaudium et Spes: To satisfy the demands of
justice and equity, strenuous efforts must be made, without
disregarding the rights of persons or the natural qualities of
each country, to remove as quickly as possible the immense
economic inequalities, which now exist and in many cases are
growing and which are connected with individual and social
discrimination.
Likewise, in many areas, in view of the special difficulties of
agriculture relative to the raising and selling of produce, country
people must be helped both to increase and to market what
they produce, and to introduce the necessary development and
renewal and also obtain a fair income. Otherwise, as too often
happens, they will remain in the condition of lower-class citizens. Let farmers themselves, especially young ones, apply
themselves to perfecting their professional skill, for without it,
there can be no agricultural advance.
Justice and equity likewise require that the mobility, which is
necessary in a developing economy, be regulated in such a
way as to keep the life of individuals and their families from
becoming insecure and precarious. When workers come from
another country or district and contribute to the economic advancement of a nation or region by their labor, all discrimination
as regards wages and working conditions must be carefully
avoided.
All the people, moreover, above all the public authorities, must
treat them not as mere tools of production but as persons, and
must help them to bring their families to live with them and to
provide themselves with a decent dwelling; they must also see
to it that these workers are incorporated into the social life of
the country or region that receives them. Employment opportunities, however, should be created in their own areas as far as
possible.
Editor’s Note: Gaudium et Spes (the Pastoral Constitution on
the Church in the Modern World) presents an overview of the
Catholic Church's teachings regarding humanity's relationship
to society, with special emphasis on economics, poverty, social
justice, culture, science, technology and ecumenism.

STUDENT VOLUNTEERS IN ACTION
We are very proud of eighth grade students, Monique Nguyen
and Jonah Nascimento, for donating their time in service to St.
Anthony's Foundation. In preparation of receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation, Monique and Jonah helped gather and
arrange 236 hygiene kits for men and woman. The less fortunate members of San Francisco received these kits while waiting in line for lunch at St. Anthony's. St. Anthony's has been
dedicated to serving the needs of the City's poor and outcast
since 1950.
