To God what is God’s
One of the things that I am good at is being a student. I have always liked studying, and I find great
pleasure in learning new things, thinking about them and pondering them. One of the dangers I fell
prey to as a student was trying to push my instructors with difficult questions.
Part of my desire in asking the questions was to move the discussion deeper
into the topic we were struggling with, but I do have to admit that another,
less attractive, motive was to show-off my own hard work and understanding.
I sometimes liked putting my instructors in a corner or to push them to the
limits of our discussion to show the inadequacy of our understanding. More
often than not I ended up showing my own limited understanding and being
embarrassed by my own arrogance.
In today’s Gospel Jesus’ opponents believe that they have finally found a way
to discredit him and place him in danger of losing the support of the people who follow him or of
coming to the attention of hostile authorities. The question of taxes to the emperor was not an
argument about the high cost of government or the proper role of government in society. The
Romans were occupiers of the Jewish homeland, and the paying of taxes to the emperor was in fact
paying for the oppression of your own people and the occupation of your homeland. The Jewish
people were resentful of paying these taxes, and support of the emperor would be seen as a betrayal.
On the other hand public advocacy of non-compliance with the Romans would place Jesus in the
dangerous position of advocating rebellion against a very powerful enemy. The Pharisees had
designed a trap with this question, and they enter the scene certain of their own victory over the Lord.
Jesus’ answer to their dishonest question takes them by surprise. In one shrewd move Jesus defeats
them. He refuses to be side-tracked by their plot, gives an answer that neither offends his followers’
dislike of Roman rule nor places him outside of Roman law. Instead Jesus turns the question into a
challenge to reflect on a deeper question. Jesus’ reply, "Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and
to God what belongs to God," sets aside the political question of taxes and goes to the more central
question of faith, mercy, and God’s loving plan of salvation.
The trap set today by the Pharisees becomes a challenge to examine our own conscience. At the heart
of Jesus’ reply is an invitation for us to reflect on who God is, what he means in our lives and how
we will relate to his mercy and love. If God is the source of life, of all blessing and goodness, then
what do I owe him in return? The implication of Jesus’ reply is that our lives are not our own, they
belong to God, and that our whole being is to glorify, praise and proclaim him. Our life, our work,
our joy, our sorrow, our triumphs, our failures, our very selves are what we return to God in humble
recognition of his love and mercy.

LIFE MATTERS: The CCW will be collecting items for Birthright

PAPER DRIVE The Knights of Columbus Council #1841 will hold
a paper drive on Friday, October 31 and Saturday, November 1 from
7:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. Items accepted include newspapers, junk mail,
magazines, paper bags and cardboard. Cardboard needs to be kept
separate from paper and NO plastic is accepted. For more

NEW ENTRANCE UPDATE: Our new entrance space is
beginning to be enclosed and outside work is moving along well.
There are brick samples for the addition against the pillars in front of
church for you to see. At the Building and Grounds Committee
meeting last week we began to finalize inside finishing decisions. If
you are interested in helping us meet our financial goals please talk to
Fr. Tony or Nancy in the parish office.
MASS WITH ANOINTING OF THE SICK ON WEDNESDAY:
On Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. we will gather for Mass with the
Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. All those who wish to be
anointed are invited to join us for this Mass. All of our AFC priests
will be present to help with this celebration. It is also the feast day of
St. John Paul II, our area faith community’s patron saint. Please join
us for this celebration.
HOLY TRINITY CCW PROVIDING MATERIALS FOR
PRAYING THE ROSARY: Don’t forget that the CCW has free
materials in the old vigil light room for you as you observe October
as the month of the Rosary.
OCTOBER IS RESPECT LIFE MONTH: We have a crib set up
in the back of church to collect diapers and incontinence products,
through October 26. Items and cash donations will be given to
Birthright Crisis Pregnancy Center and Common Cup Ministries.
MEMORIAL MASS: The Holy Trinity Memorial Mass is Saturday,
November 1, at 5:00 p.m. Parish members who have lost a loved one
and held their service at Holy Trinity are being contacted. If there are
other members of the parish who have lost a loved one between
October 13, 2013 and October 12, 2014 but did not have a service at
Holy Trinity yet would like to have them remembered at this Mass,
please call Nancy in the Parish Office at 320-485-5651. A dinner
sponsored by the HTCCW and KC members will follow the Mass for
all family members who attend.
HOLY TRINITY GROUP OUTING TO LIFELINE: Holy
Trinity Youth Group will be taking their first trip of the year to
Lifeline, on Saturday, November 1, 2014 at the NET Center in
St. Paul. Fr. Mike Schmitz will be the celebrant for Mass and the
keynote speaker for the evening program and his topic will be “Who
do you say that I am?” Fr. Mike’s vibrant faith, bold life witness and
dynamic gift of speaking will inspire and challenge you to answer
Jesus’ question: “Who do you say that I am?” Only 14 seats

CAN YOU LEND US YOUR STATUES? Once again this year our
parish plans to create a shrine to the saints in front of the altar for All
Saints Day and the month of November. If you can help us by
lending us your statues of saints for the month, please drop them off
with Kelly Le Crone at the liturgy office at church. Your generous
lending will help us create a fitting honor to the saints and heroes of
our faith.
MUSIC NEEDS: Each year our musicians need updates and
supplements for their accompaniment books and our musicians and
cantors need books with the Responsorial Psalms and Gospel
Acclamations for the year. If you are interested in helping with these
costs please talk to Kelly LeCrone, our AFC liturgist, or with Shirley
Nowak in the parish office. These generous volunteers serve us well,
and these necessary materials allow them to lead us in song and in
praising the Lord.
VETERAN’S MEMORIAL PROJECT OF THE AMERICAN
LEGION AND VFW: Over a year ago, a committee was formed
with representatives from the Glencoe American Legion and the
Glencoe Veterans of Foreign Wars to determine if there was enough
support to create a Veteran’s Memorial in Glencoe. They received
approval in May from the city to create a Glencoe Area Veteran’s
Memorial on the northwest section of the City Center grounds. It is
their intention to honor all Veterans from the Glencoe area. This
memorial is for all Veterans, alive and deceased. They are inviting
anyone from the community who has served our nation to be
recognized. Friends or family members may submit an order form to
honor a veteran associated with our community. The cost for each
Veteran’s name and information that will be recognized on one of the
monuments is $200. Their plan is to install the first monuments, flag
pole and sidewalk area before Memorial Day of 2015. If you want
your name listed on one of the first two monuments, don’t delay in
responding. The first 96 names will be gathered prior to November
1st. For more information, please contact one of the committee
members or stop by the VFW and view the display and a sample of
the granite that will be used. Committee members are: Dale Peters

THE RE CONNECTION
Have you ever noticed how much reverb is in the final mix on the old
Ritchie Valens recordings? The notes veritably echo with a haunting
air as they are conjured up from days gone by to spin again on the
turntables of today. Go to your record collection right now, slide a
Ritchie Valens album out of the sleeve and onto your record player
and try it. See what I mean? What’s that? You don’t have a record
collection anymore, and your turntable hasn’t spun since President
Reagan’s first term? Well, then I guess you’ll have to take my word
for it.
So how do our catechists get the kiddos to take to heart what they are
describing our precious Faith to be on Wednesday Nights? How can
Commandments, Beatitudes, and Precepts possess any endearing
qualities if all they seem to do at first glance is inhibit and impose? If
all the kiddos were able to do is read the important articles of our
Faith, it would have about as much impact as you trying to simply
hear what I was telling you about Ritchie Valens’ music, without the
benefit of actually hearing Ritchie Valens’ music. Fortunately for the
kiddos, our catechists serve as quasi-turntables, on which their
blessed hearts and souls spin the glorious melodies that are their
lives…lives rich in the heavenly tune directed by Our Blessed Lord,
which gracefully calls out to those willing to listen and see what lives
lived in Faith can be. And for you guys, I guess just feel free to stop
into my office sometime and we’ll give the ‘ol Ritchie Valens album
a whirl!

PAPER DRIVE: our next Paper Drive will be Saturday,
December 6, from 8:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. The trailer is located in the
old MidAm parking lot. All proceeds from the paper drives go to the
Fine Arts students to help them pay for their trip to New York City in
March.

“PAVING THE WAY WITH PRAYER” MARATHON: We are
extending our final deadline to October 30. Please continue to get
donations. We are very close and the students want to get the $25,000
so that they can go to the movie theater. We are about $2,300 away
from our goal.
LIVING ROSARY: The students will be praying a living rosary on
Wednesday, October 22, the Feast of St. John Paul II, at 12:30 p.m.
We will be using the Luminous Mysteries as they were created by
St. John Paul II. We ask that the students wear their Spirit t- shirt to
school that day.
SHARING AND CARING HANDS: Holy Trinity School will be
making quarterly trips to Sharing and Caring Hands this school year.
Our first trip is planned for Wednesday, October 29. We will be
collecting household items for the shelter that are clean and in good
condition. Please take all clothing to the Worn-A-Bit in Winsted as
there is a great need right in our own community. Items may be
brought to the high school office anytime after October 1. Questions,

Area Faith Community News
TODAY is World Mission Sunday! We are invited today to reach
out and help build the Church in Mongolia, the world’s youngest
Catholic Church, as well as local churches throughout the Missions,
in the most remote areas across our world. Your prayer and generous
gift to the Society for the Propagation of the Faith in the collection
today help the work of priests, religious and lay leaders in Mongolia
and throughout the Missions who offer the poor practical help and the
experience of God’s love and mercy, His hope and peace. Please
keep the Missions in our daily prayers. Please be a generous as you

PRIESTHOOD SUNDAY, OCTOBER 26: October 26, 2014 has
been designated as Priesthood Sunday. Please join, on this special
day, in praying for our priests, in praising God for their courage and
their generosity. The Good Shepherd SERRA Club of the Diocese of
New Ulm urges all parishioners to make appreciation for their parish
priest known. A simple note, a smile or a phone call to assure him of
your loving care and gratitude for his presence in the life of our local
churches will go a long way to serve the greater good of our
wonderful Catholic Church! The challenge issued by St John Paul the
Great, to our priests and to all, was ... “to go out on the streets and
into public places, like the first Apostles who preached Christ and the
Good News of salvation in the squares of cities, towns and villages.
This is no time to be ashamed of the Gospel (cf. Rom 1:16). It is the
time to preach it from the rooftops (cf. Mt 10:27).”
Upcoming Community Events
FEAST OF ST. JOHN PAUL II AND ANOINTING MASS AT
HOLY TRINITY: Wednesday is the feast day of St. John Paul II,
patron saint of our area faith community. Part of our celebration of
this day will be a special Mass with the Sacrament of the Anointing
of the Sick at the Church of the Holy Trinity at 10:00 a.m. All those
who wish to be anointed are invited to attend.
AFC CONFIRMATION CANDIDATE AND PARENT
MEETING: Confirmation candidates and their parents will have
their third session with Fr. Tony on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m.
at the Church of the Holy Family. There is a possibility that because
of volleyball playoffs that this session may need to be postponed. If
and only if one of our schools has a volleyball tournament game will
we cancel Wednesday’s meeting and re-schedule it at a later time.
We will contact parents through our regular channels after Monday’s
games to update you. We will not cancel our session unless one or
more of our schools advances in the tournament.
HOLY FAMILY/ST. PIUS X YOUTH GROUP TO MEET: The
Holy Family/St. Pius X Youth Group will meet on Saturday at
10:00 a.m. in the school cafeteria at St. Pius X to assemble tieblankets for their annual fund-raiser. We will have rolls and juice and
then work. We need your help to accomplish our tasks, and hope to
see all of you there.
NEEDED: We are looking for a part-time housekeeper for the Holy
Trinity rectory. The position is available immediately. For more
information please contact Nancy at the Holy Trinity parish office.

Church, Norwood Young America, 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., Lunch
served during sale, Raffle tickets available for 1:00 p.m. drawing.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 25: School Sisters of Notre Dame,
Visiting Women’s Religious Communities in the Twin Cities Area.
Women will have an opportunity to visit four different religious
communities. We will visit local communities of Benedictines,
Visitation Sisters, School Sisters of Notre Dame and Sisters of St.
Joseph. The event is free. For more information and to register
