is about to happen
This is the only Professional Development Day (Pupil Free Day) that doesn’t now fall
inside the children’s holiday times. The Professional Development Day in this term is
known as CTJ Day or Consistency of Teacher Judgement Day. This involves our teachers
meeting with teachers of other schools to ensure the way we assess the students’ work
is consistent with teachers from other schools. This means that the school will be
closed on Monday 20 October.
2014 P& F GALA CONCERT
The fourth annual P&F Gala Concert will be held in our school Auditorium on Saturday
25 October beginning at 5:00 pm. Over the last few weeks the P&F have advertised for
participants. They would like to be able to finalise the programme as soon as possible so
please ensure that if your child will be performing that you have sent along the form to
the P&F collection box in the school office.
EMERGENCY EVACUATION or LOCKDOWN PRACTICES
During this last term we will be holding practices for Emergency Evacuations and for
Lockdowns. It is essential that we practice these with the great hope that we never have
to use them for a real situation.
Should you be attending the school to assist with any event it is essential that you sign in
and out at the school office on our Visitors’ Register. Should there be a real incident
where either an Emergency Evacuation or Lockdown is called we would then know that
you were on the premises and could account for you. It is also most important that
should you be assisting in some way (working in a class; library or tuckshop) that you
follow the directions of the school staff member with whom you are working. Think
safety first!

From the APA …
ORIENTATION MORNING
It was fantastic to meet and greet our prep students for 2015 on Tuesday and Wednesday. The orientation program
was a great success. You will find some of the key messages I shared with the prep parents below.
1. Our Lady of Lourdes children are happy kids! When I visit the classrooms and playground you witness students
laughing, smiling, working and playing together.
2. Encourage your child to focus on the positive experiences in their day. Don’t let the one or two challenging
experiences dominate the end of day debrief with your child.
3. I encouraged parents to think of their own school journey and remember the path can be rocky at times. I
explained that rocky times are often when we learn and grow the most.
4. Children achieve excellent educational outcomes when there is a positive partnership between parents and
school.
We look forward to welcoming our new students and families to Our Lady of Lourdes in 2015.
OLOL GALA CONCERT
Please leave your name and number at the office if you are able to help at the Gala concert or if you can bring a plate of
food to share.
PICK UP LINE
I would like to thank all the children and parents using the back gate pick up line for the increased efficiency we have
experienced this term. The children are very good at spotting their cars and moving safely to them. I am sure this
improvement will continue throughout the term.
Enjoy the rest of the week!
Enjoy the rest of the week!

From the APRE …
ANTI-POVERTY WEEK
This week is anti-poverty week. Poverty and severe hardship affect more than a million
Australians. Around the world, more than a billion people are desperately poor. In Anti-Poverty
Week, YOU can help fight poverty and hardship!
The main aims of Anti-Poverty Week are to:
- Strengthen public understanding of the causes and consequences of poverty and hardship
around the world and in Australia; and
- Encourage research, discussion and action to address these problems, including action by
individuals, communities, organisations and governments.
World Mission Month 2014
This year World Mission Day is Sunday 19 October. World Mission Day is celebrated
every year in every country wherever there are Catholics committed to building a
better world for all of God's people, a world where everyone has all they need to live
a dignified and fulfilling life. It is the day on which we reflect on the urgency to
proclaim the Gospel in our times.
The God of love is the source of care, tenderness, compassion, hospitality and interest in other people's problems, for
spreading Christ's charity around the world. Catholic Mission around the world has the responsibility of promoting a
dignified and fruitful celebration of World Mission Day.
Children’s Mission Day is Wednesday 24 October. Teachers will be leading their students in some activities about
Catholic Mission during the coming weeks. A number of classes will also be raising money during October to support the
work of Catholic Mission.
 Senior students will be having a Day of Silence
 Prep and Year One will be having a Rock Your Socks Off Disco
More information will be supplied by the classes involved. Thank you for supporting World Mission Month.

Library News…
It has been wonderful to hear that many students are now successfully downloading ebooks from the Brisbane Catholic
Education Digital Library. If you are having any problems or require your child’s ‘Library card number’ then please
contact me via email [email protected] and I will be happy to help.
To access the Brisbane Catholic Education Digital Library, please follow the instructions below:
Download the 'overdrive' app.
1. Create an Adobe ID: It is not necessary to sign up for an overdrive account however you will need to create an
adobe ID. You will be prompted to do this and to ‘authorise your device’ before borrowing your first book.
(Adobe Ids can only be created by persons over the age of 13 so a parent or guardian will need to do this).
2. Link up to the BCE Digital Library: Open the overdrive app. In the 'add a library bar' search for 'Our Lady of
Lourdes’. Once you have selected our school, the BCE digital library will appear. Click on the BCE Digital Library
option and you will be directed to the home page. From here you can browse the collection.
3. Borrowing an ebook or audiobook: Once you have selected a book you will be prompted to sign in. This is
when you will need your child’s log in details. Most students from Year 3 upwards will know their computer
user name and this is their ‘Library Card Number’.
4. Reading your ebook: The ebook can be read straight away in your browser or you can download it for reading
at another time (for example on a car journey when you may not have internet connection).
5. The students are allowed to borrow up to 3 books at a time.
Happy ereading!
Book club magazines went home this week. Please ensure that all orders are returned
tomorrow (Friday, 17 October). The reward points we have gained this year have enabled us to
select many wonderful new books for our Library so thank you for your support.
