WEH Section Committee on Committees
Carmen Hinojosa-Laborde, WEH Committee on Committee Representative
Now is the time to nominate yourself or a colleague to serve on one of the
standing committees of APS. This is a great way to increase your involvement
with the APS. Positions are available on many of the APS committees for both
trainees and regular members. It is our goal to have WEH represented on all APS
committees. Last year we had a large number of excellent candidates; we can do
even better this year.
The nomination process is easy. First, look at the APS website to identify a
committee that fits your interests (http://www.the-aps.org/mm/hp/Audiences/APSCommittees). Second, fill out the Candidate Information Form (I will do this for you
if you send me your CV). Third, ask an APS member to fill out an Endorsement
Form for you (I can do this as well). Both forms can be found on the APS website
(http://www.the-aps.org/mm/hp/Audiences/APS-Committees/nominations).
Nominations are due January 2015.
If you want my help, contact me
([email protected]) by December 12, 2014.

WEH Section Membership Report
Babbette LaMarca, WEH At-Large Councilor for Membership
This has been a very active and exciting year for WEH! Since EB 2014 we have had
the largest growth that I‟ve seen as the membership councilor at large. 25 new regular
members, 10 new graduate students and 4 undergraduate, and 2 affiliate members
have joined our section. We will provide free entry to our new members to WEH
luncheon at EB 2015. In addition, we have 8 new regular members that joined
following the deadline last year that will be provided entry to EB 2015 luncheon.
Reminder to all regular members as you encourage new members to join APS inform
then that WEH will pay first year of membership for a new member of APS „IF‟ they
place WEH as their primary section prior to close of abstract submission for EB 2015.
Editor’s Report: American Journal of Physiology, Regulatory, Integrative
and Comparative Physiology
W.K. Samson, PhD, DSC, Editor-in-Chief, AJP-RIC
The latest data from Thomson Reuters demonstrates continued metric improvement
for the journal. Our 2013 Impact Factor Score rose to 3.529 and our 5 Year Impact
Factor also crossed the 3.5 barrier. More importantly, our Citation Half-Life
remained above the average for all AJP journals coming in at 8.9 years. We have
added two Guest Editors both in charge of “Calls for Papers.” Tom Cunningham is
managing the Call entitled: “Central Control of Fluid and Electrolyte Homeostasis.”
Sean Stocker is responsible for the Call entitled: “Central Control of Cardiovascular
Function.” A third Call entitled “Oxygen as a Regulator of Biological Systems,” is
being managed by Associate Editor Roger Evans. We welcome suggestions for
new 'Calls for Papers' and potential Review topics. We strongly encourage
members of the WEH Section to consider sending their best work to AJP RIC as
part of these Calls or as regular research articles. To date this year we have
received approximately 400 manuscripts for review, representing a drop in total submissions from this point in
2013 of approximately 12%. Our message: Send us your work! We are very pleased with the feedback we
have received for the articles published this summer from the 2014 Data Diuresis Session at EB2014 and are
committed to continue that activity in 2015.
Call for Nominations for the WEH Leonard Share Award

WEH Physiologists in Industry Report
Carol Moreno Quinn, WEH Physiologists in Industry Representative
The APS Physiology in Industry Committee is sponsoring a Symposium at EB2015
entitled “Targeting Gut Microbiome in Human Diseases and as Novel Therapeutics”,
chaired by Carol Moreno Quinn M.D. Ph.D. and Suttira Intrapad, Ph.D., the recipient of
the 2014 PIC Novel Disease Model Award. The PIC Symposium will be scheduled on
Sunday, March 29 in Boston Convention Center.
The gut is home to hundreds of trillions of microorganisms. Gut flora is known to
be essential to the digestion of nutrients, synthesis of vitamin B and K, suppression of
pathogenic microbial growth and immunity. Gut microbiome has also been involved in
a variety of other processes, from sugar appetite to cancer susceptibility. With the advent of Next-Generation
DNA sequencing the Human Microbiome Project has been able to uncover microbes that have never been
seen before, look at how they behave as communities, and study the correlation of microbiota composition
and disease susceptibility and incidence. There are also an increasing number of studies assessing the
therapeutic effect of modifying gut microbiome composition on allergies, diabetes, cardiovascular disease
and even drug efficacy. We are looking forward to listen to the speakers of this exciting symposium.
The PIC Novel Disease Model Award is sponsored by Novo Nordisk Research Centre China, a world
leader in developing innovative treatments for Diabetes. Two awards are granted each year to a graduate
student and a postdoctoral fellow who submit the best abstracts at EB meeting that describe a novel disease
model. The model s hould clearly emphasize the potential utility of the system for future research related to a
disease. The deadline to submit your application is November 6th 2014, coinciding with the EB abstract date.
The award is $500 for the graduate student and $800 for the postdoctoral fellow categories, respectively, and
will be presented at the APS Business Meeting.
On Experimental Biology 2014 the PIC Novel Disease Model Award awardee for pre-doctoral student was
Ms. Ellen Gillis, University of Mississippi Medical Center, Jackson, MS for her abstract entitled “The Dahl S
rat on normal salt diet is a spontaneous model of preeclampsia” and the awardee for postdoctoral student
was Dr. Suttira Intrapad, Ph.D., University of Mississippi Medical Center, Jackson, MS for her abstract “A new
model of intra uterine growth restriction (IUGR) induced by reduced uterine perfusion in the mouse programs
hypertension in the IUGR mouse offspring” Both awards were presented at the 2014 APS Business Meeting.
Know Your WEH History!
Jennifer Sasser, WEH Historian and Columnist.
The concept of recognizing WEH research as a sub-discipline or section within the APS
was initiated by Dr. Leonard Share at the University of Tennessee and a number of his
colleagues within the APS. Dr. Share‟s vision of distinguishing WEH research began with
acknowledging that none of the other sub-disciplines within the APS incorporated
viewpoints that included “cross-talk” among organs and organ systems in the regulation
of body fluids. In the early 1970‟s, research in the mechanisms of how mediators from
the brain influenced sodium and water homeostasis via renal excretion was extremely
active, with broad recognition by the pharmaceutical industry and NIH. Thus, Dr. Share
and a few other investigators initiated the recognition of WEH research by the APS in the
form of a section. The section began in 1982 and has sustained recognition of WEH research throughout. At
present, WEH research is even more encompassing than when it first began because of the translational and
systemic “point of view” of WEH research. This research is vertically and horizontally integrated to include all
levels of research from cells to organisms, and from one organ to the next. The regulation of water and
electrolytes is integral to all functional aspects of all living organisms, and many of the investigators who study
WEH research are committed to understanding how the cardiovascular, renal, and neuro-endocrine systems
integrate to regulate water and electrolytes and maintain other homeostatic systems such as blood pressure.
WEH research is not restricted to one system or organ, one set of hormones, or a particular set of
mechanisms, rather homeostasis of body fluids is critical in many physiological and pathophysiological states
and is required for proper regulatory control. Therefore, work by WEH investigators serves as a balanced
force between the full-range of other more traditional organ-based sub-disciplines of physiology. For a more
in depth explanation of what it means to be a member of WEH, please see “Water and electrolyte
homeostasis brings balance to physiology”, Am J Physiol – RIC, 307(5):R481-R483.
Congratulations to WEH member Dr. Babbette LaMarca,
Recipient of the American Physiological Society 2015
Henry Pickering Bowditch Award
The Bowditch Award is given to a regular member of the APS who is
under 42 years of age or less than eight years beyond postdoctoral
training for their outstanding accomplishments in the field of
physiology. Dr. LaMarca is an Associate Professor of Pharmacology at
the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Her work is focused on
immune mechanisms that contribute to the pathogenesis of
preeclampsia.
WEH/AJP: Regulatory, Integrative, and Comparative
Trainee Best Abstract Award
