In the afternoon we will enjoy a walking tour of Ypres, including the Ypres Ramparts Cemetery, Menin Gate, and past Cloth Hall. The rest of the afternoon is free. A visual feast awaits you on a storied road named for the many flowers that line it. Running along the limestone cliffs is a little road called the Route de la Corniche Fleurie. The road winds through the picturesque hamlets of Pain de Sucre, Marmisson, and Roque de Thau, where you’ll find charming stone houses built by 19th-century ship captains. Upon returning to Blaye, your guide will take you through the 17th-century citadel built by famed military engineer Vauban. Its fortress and tunnels, which you’ll see, are a UNESCO monument. Then enjoy some free time on your own to explore this wonderful town. A drive along its shores allows you to see the many pretty sights along both sides of the river, like the picturesque village of Castillon-la-Bataille, where the final battle of the Hundred Years’ War was fought in 1453. You’ll also see the English bastide town of Sainte-Foy-laGrande. In 1255 it was lauded for its strategic location; today it’s more famous for its fabulous weekly farmers’ market. Once returned to Libourne, you’ll have free time to explore the town on your own. The town, built atop limestone hills, offers many interesting shops related to the local wine production, but what makes it extraordinary is what exists below the cobbled streets—a subterranean, monolithic church that dates to the 12th century. End the evening with an after-dark tour of the city of Bordeaux.
