Thank you for your dedication to supporting the missionary works of the Universal Church and for building a culture that
recognizes the dignity of every human life, from conception and every moment until natural death. These acts of
generosity are tremendous blessings to the Body of Christ, His Church.
This fall we have the opportunity to promote the dignity of the human person within our diocese
and in the poor mission territories that are struggling because of social and political upheaval. October is Respect Life and
World Missions Month. As Catholics, our concern for these issues comes from our profound reverence for every human
person as created in the image and likeness of God. As members of the Mystical Body of Christ, the love that we have for
our neighbor cannot support exceptions.
This year’s theme for Respect Life Month is “Each of us is a masterpiece of God’s creation.” Pope Francis reminds us, “Even
the weakest and most vulnerable, the sick, the old, the unborn and the poor are masterpieces of God’s creation, made in
his own image, destined to live forever, and deserving of the utmost reverence and respect.”
Pope Francis has challenged us with his apostolic exhortation, Evangelii Gaudium, where he refers to a “throw away
culture,” a culture in which some people are not only exploited, but also seen as not even human. We must challenge the
pervasive throw away culture in which people may be treated as objects whose value is measured only by the pleasure
they bring others who wield more power. God, our Creator, presents us to each other as His masterpieces.
This year’s World Mission Sunday theme “I will Build My Church” focuses on the words from St. Matthew’s Gospel. The
Church in Mongolia, the youngest Church in the world today, is highlighted, along with Missionary Bishop Wenceslao
Padilla, the first Bishop of Mongolia, who is cultivating the dignity of the poor and vulnerable in this new mission territory.
Only a little more than 20 years ago, after decades of Communist rule, the people of Mongolia have now heard the Good
News of Jesus proclaimed. In Mongolia, as in so many remote places around the world, our Church is holy and active,
serving the poor and those in need, evangelizing and calling all to grow in faith.
I hope that you will take this opportunity to pray for a Culture of Life in Central Texas, starting first in our own hearts and
parishes and extending to the whole world. I pray that you will take advantage of the many opportunities to join with
our Holy Father to challenge the “throw away culture,” including generous support of the Propagation of the Faith
(World Mission Sunday) special collection which will be taken on the weekend of October 18-19, 2014. This collection
ensures the continued development of the poor missions and people they serve. Thank you for your continued prayer
and support.

GOSPEL MEDITATION
One of the messages of today’s
Gospel is that we have a
responsibility to participate in the
civic life of our country. Faithful
Catholics should pay their taxes,
register and vote, serve on juries
and perform other works of service
for the community at large. Do you
whole-heartedly participate in
these activities? Pray for the
wisdom and strength for you and
others to do so.
CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING
Jesus knows that the Pharisees
were seeking to entrap him and he
does not allow it. Government has
a role to play, but God’s role is
always
more
central
and
important. A question that arises
from this Gospel is: Do we live in a
way that reflects the primacy of
God in our lives? Do our lives show
God’s values regarding sharing our
gifts and resources in the world?
Do the poor have a place of
primacy in our consciousness, as
they do for God? What is one
thing we can do this week to let
the poor have a privileged place in
our life and consciousness?
REMEMBRANCE envelopes are available at the display racks
in the church foyer. We will collect the names of deceased
relatives and friends as well as your donation. Wednesday,
October 22nd is the last day to turn in the envelope. The
names will be entered in the Book of Remembrance and prayed over at all
Masses during the month of November. – All Souls Day is on Sunday, November 2nd.

Deaf Ministry Signing Choir: Greetings! We are proud to establish a Signing Choir
group as part of the Deaf Ministry in which anyone is welcome to join. Cynthia
Cunningham-Piper will be the coordinator and lead the Signing Choir group. The
Signing Choir group will sign certain songs in American Sign Language (ASL) at
special Masses such as Lent, Easter, Advent, and Christmas during the 11:15 a.m.
Mass unless otherwise noted. Practices will be on Sundays before the11:15 a.m..
Mass in the upper room from 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 p.m. However, Cynthia, the
signing choir coordinator, will meet everyone in the church foyer, and then lead
the group to the upper room. You need not to know ASL to join as you will have
the opportunity to learn during practice. Hope you will join us! If you have any

St. Ignatius Martyr Young Adults:
Greetings Catholic Young Adults! My name is Deacon Dan Ponisciak
and I am currently in the process of developing a program for a Young
Adult Ministry here at St. Ignatius. Since this would be a group
designed specifically for you, I would like to gather feedback from you,
as young adult Catholics between the ages of 21-35, about the specific
needs and issues that you would like this group to focus on. While
there are many opportunities in the parish already for young adults to
participate, we wanted to brainstorm the possibility of developing a
program specifically for you based on your needs.
Therefore, I have developed a survey that can be completed online on
our website: www.st-ignatius.org. Please complete the survey
concerning a Young Adult Ministry here at St. Ignatius Martyr and
consider joining an advisory group this October to discuss the future
possibilities for this ministry. The survey can be found by clicking on
the "Contact Us" section of the website and by then clicking on my
picture. It is an exciting time to be Catholic and to be a part of the St.
Ignatius Parish Community. Please join me in discerning this ministry's
future within our parish.
Join Us in discerning a new Young Adult Ministry this Monday, Oct. 20
at 7pm at Matt's El Rancho. Young Adult Ministry aims to connect
Catholic Young Adults between the ages of 21-35 with Jesus Christ
and his challenge to live the Gospel. Come meet other young adults
as we talk about how best to develop this group. It should be a great
night of prayer, fellowship and discernment. If you have any

The St. Ignatius Food Pantry will be having an adult coat,
jacket and sweater collection after all Masses October 18th
and 19th. We will be collecting adult socks, as well. Our

This year the Parish Social Ministry is excited to
host a monthly pot-luck speaker series featuring
the many social ministries in Austin. In October
our panel will discuss how Catholics are serving
people experiencing hunger in our community
and how you can be a part of it. The panel will

Leaders needed for the Children’s Liturgy of the Word:
For many years here at St. Ignatius the Children’s Liturgy of
the Word has been a wonderful ministry that is available
during the 9:30 and 11:15 Sunday Mass. Unfortunately, due
to a lack of volunteers, we have not been able to offer this
ministry to the children on a consistent basis. The children
are missing this opportunity to connect with the Word of God through an
age appropriate proclamation of the Word and homily. We would very
much like to start up the ministry again and are looking for 8-10 volunteer
leaders who would alternate Sundays each month. Your commitment -after
the initial training on a Sunday morning- would be for approximately one

People first: The Second Vatican Ecumenical Council, Pastoral Constitution on the
Church in the Modern World, Gaudium
et Spes, says “Man is the source, the focus and the aim of all economic and social life”. This position of the Church is
reinforced in Pope Benedict XVI’s encyclical Caritas in Veritate when he says “I
would like to remind everyone, especially
governments engaged in boosting the
world's economic and social assets, that

the primary capital to be safeguarded and valued is man, the human person in his or her integrity:”
Pope Francis in his exhortation The Joy of the Gospel says rather than money and the financial system serving humanity, “we have calmly
accepted its (money’s) dominion over ourselves and our societies”. To correct this imbalance Pope Francis identifies challenges that need to
be addressed to put things into proper order. He says the following in The Joy of the Gospel:
 No to an economy of exclusion. “Today everything comes under the laws of competition and the survival of the fittest, where the
powerful feed upon the powerless. As a consequence, masses of people find themselves excluded and marginalized: without work,
without, possibilities, without any means of escape.”
 No to an idolatry of money. “The current financial crisis can make us overlook that fact that it originated in a profound human crisis:
the denial of the primacy of the human person!”
 No to financial system which rules rather than serves. “It (Ethics) is seen as counterproductive, too human, because it makes money
and power relative. It is felt to be a threat, since it condemns the manipulation and debasement of the person.”
 No to the inequality which spawns violence. “Today in many places we call for greater security. But until exclusion and inequality in
society and between people is reversed, it will be impossible to eliminate violence.”
Our commitment to being faithful citizens calls upon us to engage in addressing these issues and directing your elected officials to
undertake their responsibility to address these as well. Contact your representatives and let them know how important this is to you as a
person of faith and as a guide in determining for whom you will vote.
