PASTOR’S CORNER
SUNDAY OCTOBER 19, 2014
Dear Friends at Saint Paul:
Thanks to our Parish Finance Council, Deacon Dave Kierski, and Donna Simon for all their efforts in providing the Annual Finance Report that we heard last week. Please see inside this bulletin the graphs that Bob
Nenni and Mary Ann Harper mentioned. Thanks to them as co-Chairs for providing this report.
Following up on last weekend's jottings... So, what is the Mass? Most of us consider it a weekly event although some can go during the week... a good and virtuous practice!. This “event” has a beginning and an
end. It has a structure and a tradition, with customs and rituals. It has a venerable history and contemporary adaptation, with a unique just-for-today expression. It is always the same and it is always different,
every time!
The Mass is an act of worship, where the faith community of believers, directing their hearts and minds to
God, become empowered for the unveiling of God's Kingdom. It is an act of worship, where the universal
Church becomes en-fleshed by us at Saint Paul, New Bern in our contemporary circumstances and in our
particular lives. It is an act of worship where we express in a single common action and offer to God in union with Christ the most intimate and spiritual of our individual and personal hopes and fears, joys and sorrows.
The Mass is much more an intersection, than an event! The theological word for this is “nexus” - a meeting
place. Perhaps we could compare it to a diamond... just a rock, an industrial cutter, a beautiful crystal, a
shared sign of love, a light of attraction and delight, a 50th anniversary, a treasure, or just a rock... all
these things, all at once.
How is this a follow-up on last week's jottings about the Mass Intentions? That's what the Mass Intentions
are... one part of the “nexus” where we bring together the “today” of the Mass with the “eternity” that is
Heaven and apply the fruits of the Mass to a particular and singular need. This requires a priest in personae
Christi (in the person of Christ) to have agreed that the unique Mass is offered for the particular intention
of the person who makes the request.
Now, what about our actual pastoral practice... what do we actually do and how? Ah... next week's jottings!
Peace,
IN AN EMERGENCY:
We now have an AED (Defibrillator) located in the first aid
closet thanks to an anonymous donation made by one of our
parishioners. Please make note of this in case of an
emergency.
We have made more progress with our automated door system
thanks to a contribution by the Knights of Columbus. Now
both main doors will stay open from 7am to 7pm daily and at
other times for special occasions. Thanks again to our Knights
for this generous donation.
If you require access to the Church or FLC after hours please
see our Director of Operations for a key card that will allow
you access. Anyone that now has a key, we ask you to swap
out for a key card.
Take Care,
Deacon Dave Kierski, Director of Operations

ST PAUL CATHOLIC SCHOOL
Joseph Chapel. ¡ Ven y Únete a nosotros!

CHAPLET OF DIVINE MERCY – Children often see rules as little more
than a limit placed on being able to do as they please. Many adults,
too, live under this illusion. In the same way he tempted Jesus, the
devil wants us to “make our own rules”. In his response, Jesus sets out
the truth that following the Word of God is a source of life. In the
Commandments we find God’s rules for life. By following them, we
will remain connected to Him. Our faithfulness is made evident by our
choices, in what we avoid and what we choose to do. (Matt 4:3-4)
( I Tim.18-19) What do our choices reveal? Come, Holy Spirit and
guide us!! ( From Loyola 3 Minute Retreat ).
