GET UP & GO
Coordinators Message
We hope everyone enjoyed the summer and the warm weather continues well into the fall!
It’s an exciting time at the Wilson Centre. This fall we will be conducting a food services survey, to find out what types of
food and meals you would like to see at the Wilson Centre.
As the Centre gets busier and space becomes more of a commodity, we need the members to remember at times rooms
and spaces will be used for all sorts of programs and activities. At times programs may be moved or not
scheduled in an attempt to try something new and to bring new people into experience our Centre.
We would like to wish Sally Marshall all the best. Sally decided this year not to continue teaching the fitness programs.
The staff and members would like to thank Sally for her many years of committed service.
This fall will bring an end to Carol Moffat’s era at the Wilson Centre. Carol has been planning her retirement for some
time now, and to Carol we extend our best wishes for the future and gratitude for her service to our
members.
Be sure to join us for the Fall Affair on November 8 for the Annual Fall Affair; a fundraiser for the Wilson Centre
Seniors’ Advisory Association.
When you return for the Fall, please do not forget to stop by the offices and say “hi”.
Developed in collaboration with BC Womens' Osteofit and the Fraser Health Falls Prevention Initiative, Get Up
& Go! is an appropriate entry level exercise program for seniors with balance and mobility impairments who
would otherwise be unable to attend a community based exercise class. This safe and gentle exercise program
is specially designed to improve strength, balance and coordination as well as functional ability. Activities are
modified for individual ability. For referral to this program, contact Fraser Health Falls and Injury Prevention at
604-587-7866 or e-mail at [email protected]. Get Up & Go! is taught by a registered Osteofit
instructor.

Presidents Message
The newsletter will now be published only four times a year rather than six. I'm told it is to save
money by combining it with the program guide. I suspect however they are just trying to quietly
shut me up and only have to put up with me four times a year, rather than six.
I hope everyone had a great summer, it's now back to the good stuff we look forward to weekly/
daily in our lives at the Centre. We still need volunteers in the kitchen so now is the time to step
forward if you feel the need to give back a little for what we have. Also in the last newsletter I mentioned The
Port Coquitlam Sports Alliance also needed volunteers for score keeping, clerical work, etc. So if you were a
soccer/hockey Mom or Dad that is missing the involvement now is your chance. Let myself, Rob, or Cierra
know.
CVSS has moved it's shopping program to Save-On -Foods. I want to thank Safeway for seventeen years of
stellar service. They did a wonderful job, but times and circumstances change, as does everything else, we
all know this too well at our age. Having lost the financial support of the United Way, CVSS is not out of the
woods yet, we have acquired some additional funding that will take us well into 2015. All, and any donation
is welcome and tax deductible. Hopefully some of the grant applications and other income sourcing we are
working on will come to fruition.
SEATED ZUMBA
This popular Latin inspired dance fitness can now be done from the seat of
your chair. Geared toward those with limited mobility and those who prefer to
exercise from a chair. All fitness levels welcome. Come join the fun!
Construction on the new handicapped washroom will start soon. It will be combining the two south west
washrooms near the poolroom, into one unisex, handicapped accessible facility. We know that this cuts
down the number of washrooms available, but the need for a walker/wheelchair accessible room was needed very badly. That is not to say it cannot be used by all, it just means that all will be able to use it.

Not sure where it goes? The City provides a variety of resources to help residents sort their waste properly.
Much of what we used to send to the landfill can go into your green cart (food and yard waste, food-soiled
papers) or blue cart (paper, tin and plastic recyclables).
Putting our waste in the right place not only helps the environment, but saves taxpayers money.
Waste-sorting resources:
Get info about properly sorting and disposing of your waste and download a Sort it Right waste-sorting poster
at www.portcoquitlam.ca/wasteloss.
Search www.portcoquitlam.ca/recyclingdirectory for disposal options.
Get a free Sort it Right guide with waste-sorting poster at City facilities and the City Info Tent at civic events.
For more information, visit www.portcoquitlam.ca/wasteloss or contact 604.927.5267 or
[email protected].
Did you know that apartments and townhouses can opt in to all or part of the City’s waste collection services,
including blue carts (paper, tin and plastic recyclables) and green carts (food and yard waste, food-soiled
papers)?
City staff will work with your complex to customize the service to both meet your needs and program
requirements.
Complexes can join the City blue cart program at no additional cost for the basic service. Green cart collection is
available at competitive rates.
Ultimately, switching to City services:
May save your complex money
Will enable you to send less to the landfill
Will give you access to comprehensive service and resources, such as the free PoCo Waste-Line
smartphone app, online and printed information, and helpful staff.
