Welcome!
Hooray, you have entered the DoonBank Trofee CycloCross hosted by Ayr Roads Cycling
Club! You might remember us from organising the Davie Bell RR, or the Scottish 25, or the
Scottish Hill Climb, or from the time we cut you up at the Moniaive TLI. Either way, you can
be sure you are in for a treat during your visit to Ayrshire!
Did you know that organiser John-Paul Baxter has been able to pronounce Sven Nys’
surname correctly for 6 whole months? Or, that co-organiser Chris Johnson once spoke to
Barrie Clarke’s dad in Wolverhampton? With this true cyclocross pedigree we are confident
that the DoonBank Trofee is going to be a day of non-stop fun.
Despite this level of know-it-all-ism, we have enlisted some help from the following helpful
people: Neil Walker (Constructive Course Criticism), Vic Possee (Saving the Date), Tom
A’Hara (Commissaire), SCX (Event Resources), Martin Young (Photo apparatus handling),
Fiona Walker (PA Hollering) and loads of other people who you will encounter on the day!
We are hugely grateful to Wellington School for use of their playing fields at Doonside and
to Michael Dunlop for access to the ‘Pyramid of Doom’.
Please take your time to familiarise yourself with the contents of this fine publication, clean
your bicycle and come participate.
Regards,
JP Baxter and Christopher JG

1st DoonBank Trofee CX
Sunday 19th October 2014:
Doonside Playing Fields, Alloway, Ayr
The DoonBank Trofee name is of course plagiarised from the BPostBank Trofee (formerly the GVA) Cyclocross series
in Belgium. We are racing on the Banks of the River Doon. Very close to where Tam O Shanter escaped from some
nasty witches.
The date was arranged by Ayr Roads CC life member Vic Possee who is celebrating a milestone birthday this year.
Vic has requested charitable donations at the event for Marie Curie Cancer Care – fighting for a cause that resonates
deeply with the members of Ayr Roads.
Licence Points:
The event is registered as a British Cycling Category B Cross Event meaning those entrants with a full racing licence
are entitled to some points. For all categories with more than 10 competitors points should be awarded using the
standard British Cycling ‘Band 4’ table. Simples eh?

Some Techincal Regulations:
The DoonBank Trofee is run under the regulations of British Cycling. A handpicked selection of relevant Cyclo Cross
event rules from Scottish Cycling’s 2014 Technical Handbook appear below:
12.10 EQUIPMENT PITS
12.10.1 The equipment pit is that part of the circuit where riders can change wheels or bicycles. Servicing and the
changing of bicycles will only be allowed in these pits. Any rider passing the exit of the pit area must continue on the
course until reaching the next pit area. The provision of equipment pits is obligatory in all races except those for
under 12s and those promoted under the Go-Cross category.
12.10.5 Pits shall be straight and in clearly defined areas. They should be signposted and precisely marked by yellow
flags at each corner.
12.10.6 At the side of the pit area a zone at least 2 metres deep shall be set aside for riders’ assistants and their
equipment.
12.10.7 In category A events the race lane and the pit lane shall be separated and distinctly marked out by tape or
barriers. A rider may use the pit lane only in the event of a change of bicycle or wheel. Access shall be provided for
riders’ assistants only on one side of the pit lane.
12.11 CONDUCT OF COMPETITORS
12.11.1 Where practicable, thirty minutes should be allowed before the start of events (other than those for under
12s) for on-course inspection and training by the respective riders.
12.11.2 All races shall be started by an audible signal from a point not visible to competitors. No indication shall be
given to competitors of the passing of seconds immediately before the start.
12.11.3 Riders found to be causing false starts shall be penalised at the discretion of the Commissaire. The method
of stopping a false start shall be defined by the start official during any pre-race instructions.
12.11.4 Riders shall start with the front wheel behind the line and with at least one foot on the ground.
12.11.5 Riders shall not receive assistance at the start, or during the event. The handing up of refreshment is
forbidden.
12.11.6 Any rider deliberately leaving the course shall be deemed to have retired from the event.
12.11.7 No competitor shall cover any part of the course without his machine.
12.11.8 When being lapped, it is the responsibility of the lapped rider to surrender the racing line.
12.11.9 All competitors, whilst training or racing on the course, shall wear properly affixed protective headgear
which must be of a hard/soft shell construction. The responsibility for ensuring that the protective headgear is of a
standard sufficient to provide adequate protection in the case of an accident whilst training or racing on the course
shall lie solely with the competitor. NB: advice on helmet standards may be found in the note appended to SC
technical regulation 1.17.1.
12.11.10 No member of SC/BC other than those competing or officiating shall be permitted to ride on a course whilst
a race is in progress.
12.11.11 The first three riders wherever practicable shall receive their awards directly after the event has finished
and adjacent to the finishing area.

How to find us:
The Doonside Playing Fields (Or Wellington School Playing Fields) are located just 2 miles south of Ayr Train Station –
a 50min trip from Glasgow Central and no advance bike reservations required.
If you are coming by car we strong recommend car sharing!
There is limited parking available at the strip as we are commandeering a section of what is available as part of the
race circuit. However, we are very grateful to Cambusdoon Sports Club who have also agreed to allow some
overspill parking (2 Burns Wicket, Alloway, AYR, KA7 4NH) and even handier is on-street parking allowing Alloway.
Whereever you park, please do so respectfully as we don’t want any complaints!
If coming from Glasgow we are easy to find:

Head down the A77 signed Ayr/Stranraer. At the 1st roundabout (BP/Travel lodge) take the left filtered lane.

Pass by the airport runway (straight through at the new roundabout) up the hill to Whitletts roundabout 2nd exit (staying on the Ayr by-pass)

next roundabout "Holmston" straight on up the hill

next roundabout take the 2nd exit (to Girvan/Stranraer) and go underneath the railway bridge.

take the 2nd filtered lane on your right that says "Alloway & Doonfoot" as well as a Scottish Tourist sign that
says "Burns Heritage Centre" and "Craig Tara" Holiday park. ·

At the mini roundabout take 1st exit (left). Carry on to the bottom of the road.

Turn left, go over the bridge at the Brig O'Doon Hotel and take the 2nd road on your left. (be careful not to
turn into a private driveway)

RACE HEADQUARTERS
The headquarters of the event are at Wellington
School’s Playing Fiends – full direction details included

leave enough time to get to the start on time. Do not
cross the start finish line during training as this will
interrupt the electronic timing system we have hired
for the event.
The playing fields are used regularly and it is
important that we DO NOT CYCLE inside the marked
pitches.
Vic Possee will be responsible for griding the field –
this will be done for the first 10-12 riders based on
current series standings in the Scottish Cyclo Cross
Series.
Changing facilities including showers are available.
We will have access to water for buckets, but no
hoses.
SIGNING ON
We strongly encourage ON-LINE entry. Just google
DoonBank Trofee British Cycling and you’ll find it.
Online entry will close midnight Thursday 16th
October.

This is a long shift for our sign-on teams so please be

another form of ID in exchange for your timing chip.
You will also be issued a number that you may be
required to return. A couple safety pins will be issued
– if you are precious about having more than 4 bring
your own!
For the U12 and U8 categories all riders will register
on the morning. They MUST be accompanied by a
parent / guardian who can sign consent forms. Spare

For adult sign ups on the day we will require exact

FUNDRAISING
Our Vic turned 75 this year. A World Masters Track
Medallist, a National Trophy Cyclo Cross star and a
general all round good guy, we are delighted to have
Vic Possee back in good health and on his bike after a
long and difficult year fighting cancer.
Vic was the driving force behind us putting on a Cross
Race in 2014 and we are pleased to support Vic’s
request to raise some funds for Marie Curie Cancer
Care. Please drop some pennies in our fundraising
bucket at race sign on.
