We are doing something about it! • • Through the Girl Rising event, we’re raising the awareness of students, staff, families and community about the status of girls’ education around the world and the global water crisis. Through the Girl Rising event, we’re raising funds for H2O For Life-Water For South Sudan to bring water to South Sudanese villages in need. We know that when a village has water, not only are people healthier, water will make it possible for more girls to attend school rather than walk for water. As you are reading I Am Malala and preparing for Girl Rising, your mission (in a group of three) is to create one banner and one placard that will be used at the Girl Rising event. Banners will raise the awareness of our students, staff and guests and decorate the hall from the front entry to the Auditorium. Placards will raise awareness as they are featured in photos at the “Step and Repeat” Social Media Area (Photo Booth). I will provide paper, Sharpies, glue in class. If you’d like to use different supplies, you will need to purchase those and bring them to class with you. You and your group need to create your banner and placard HERE AT SCHOOL. Most important components are the choice of statistic or quote and the professionalism and readability of the banner and placard. 1. Research and choose 3-4 powerful statistics or quotes about girls education OR the status of the world’s girls and women OR the connection between girls and women and the global water crisis OR the global water crisis in general. 2. For space purposes, the placard statistic or quote will most likely need to be shorter than the banner statistic or quote. st 3. I have provided links on our Wikispace under Tuesday, October 21 . They are a good starting point. 4. When you choose your statistics or quotes, add them to the class master list. Let’s avoid duplicates. (Thus, it is good to have 3-4 in mind.) BANNER (10 POINTS – powerful statistic or quote, professional in appearance, readable) 1. Create a NEAT, CLEAR banner featuring one of your statistics or quotes. Banner requirements: a. Size = approximately 30” x 40” (I will provide banner paper). b. Contrasting colors (see right side of page). c. Lettering may be neatly handwritten with marker in LARGE, THICK BLOCK LETTERS, computer generated using a LARGE, CLEAR FONT or glued on using store-bought letters (not required!). • If you are hand lettering, use pencil first, then go over with marker. • If you are hand lettering, have one person do the lettering to maintain consistency. PLACARD (5 POINTS – powerful statistic or quote, professional in appearance, readable) 2. Create a NEAT, CLEAR placard featuring one of your statistics or quotes. Placard requirements: a. Use the small, white poster board I will provide. b. Contrasting colors (see right side of page). c. Lettering must be neatly handwritten in LARGE, THICK, BLOCK LETTERS with marker, computer generated using a LARGE, CLEAR FONT or glued on using store-bought letters (not required!)
