Greetings from the Commander
I hope this letter finds everyone well and happy. A lot has happened since my last newsletter; thank goodness
it’s been positive. We just had our annual golf outing, which was a huge success yet again. Please thank Roland and Nancy Pellitier, Scott Deacon, and all the volunteers that make this event what it is.
Dinners are up and going again. Please check the calendar to see what is on the menu and then come join us!
The Post is planning another Thanksgiving dinner this year. We have already contacted Fisher House and the
VA Medical Center in hopes of bringing 20 – 30 of our less fortunate veterans for a day of fun and festivities.
Our world-renowned chefs come from all over, as far away as North Beach and Chesapeake Beach Maryland
to help make this event one to remember. Members and family are also invited to enjoy dinner and spend
some time with our veterans.
For those not aware, every Sunday the post has a cookout on the downstairs patio. The menu varies and can
range from simple items, such as hamburgers and hot dogs, to steak, ribs, and the like. Come join our football
fans and enjoy the food and party; Chefs Pellitier and Purdy are a sight to behold! Donations always accepted.
We are moving forward on Post improvements. This quarter we are trying for a completely new water softening system as well as a new HVAC system upstairs. I will keep you posted as to our progress.
Thank you to all the volunteers, Legionnaires, SALs, and Auxiliary who make this Post special. Your countless hours and tireless efforts do not go unnoticed. In closing, please keep all our troops, both near and afar,
as well as their loved ones and our veterans in your thoughts and prayers. Without them, there would be no
freedom. God bless the USA.

No Post can survive without the members stepping up and helping out with functions and
tasks around the Post! I want each and every member of Post 206 to seriously consider doing
so. You don’t need to dedicate 8 or 10 hours for anything. Just maybe 2 to 3 hours will do!
Just ask what is needed or read one of the fliers that are posted. You never know what is needed until you do. Also, if you are sked, please take the time to step up and help out. YOU ARE
NEEDED!!!!

WELCOME to Campaign 2015. Yes, renewal time is well under way. By now the original
2015 renewal notices sent out are 3 months old. National will be sending out the 1st of 3 reminders to those of you who have not yet renewed. So far the Post is at 507 members. This
includes renewals, transfers and new members. We are at 58 %. Our GOAL is 873. LETS
TEAM UP so we can make goal. “How can I help” you ask? Easy as 123.
1. Renew your own membership.
2. Remind others members who have not yet renewed to send it in.
3. As you meet an eligible person invite him/her to join. See a post officer or bartender for an
application or keep one in your wallet.
******NOTICE to all ACTIVE DUTY. If you have not already renewed we need your help
to identify your status. The Post will pay your dues, BUT ONLY IF WE HEAR FROM YOU.

GREETINGS FROM THE AUXILIARY PRESIDENT
Well we are off and running! I can’t emphasize how important it is for all of our Auxiliary members to
participate in some way. We are well recognized in the American Legion Department of Maryland and want
to continue to make an impact on our Veterans and communities. What better way than build member involvement within our great community?
At this time our country needs volunteers to do many things for our veterans and their families. We
send boxes abroad to our troops so if you have a family member or a friend of the family who has been deployed why not get their information, number, and address of their destination? We will take care of the rest.
This is a great way to get involved!
We are going to start working with the USO and their families and welcoming our soldiers when they
return home at the airport. This is a new exciting opportunity that we are adding to our duties along with continuing our support and time at our VA Hospital visits and our Charlotte Hall activities.
All of our activities at our post (Dinners, Bazaars, Dances, etc.) contribute to our finances which in turn
are used for the benefit of our military and community. If you get involved you will be blessed if only in your
heart.

AUXILIARY CHRISTMAS BAZAAR
The Auxiliary will again host the ever-popular Annual Christmas Bazaar on Saturday, November 22, 2014,
from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. There is always a very good crowd to support this major fund-raiser and many,
many hands are needed to put it over in the usual successful manner. Sign-up sheets will be posted on the
Auxiliary bulletin board for baked goods and for general volunteers, both women and men. Sign-up for 1 hour
or 8 hours, all help will be appreciated.
Vendors are expected to offer Holiday-themed items and/or items suitable for gifts. While past participating
vendors are being contacted, new vendors should be encouraged to get on board. If you know someone who
might be interested, have him/her call Brenda Miller. The Auxiliary charges $30.00 per table plus one saleable item for the ALA sale table (Chinese Raffle); if no saleable item is forthcoming, the fee is $35.00.
In addition to vendors, the Auxiliary will offer light breakfast and luncheon meals and drinks, plus a bake table, music, face painting, Chinese Raffle, pother raffles, and Santa!

Greetings from the SAL Commander
As the cooler weather approaches and the leaves are turning it is also time to get geared
up for our fund raising and special events. Please take note in the Calendar Section for our upcoming events. Our regular business meeting in September was well attended. There were
many issues covered including Charitable Donations. The Members approved sponsoring a
Golf Team and a Hole for the Post’s Golf Tournament to be held September 26. This is to raise
funds for the Children and Youth Programs. Also approved were donations to Special Olympics of Southern Maryland, Chesapeake Cares Food Bank and the Charlotte Hall Veterans
Home. I am very proud of our Squadron for assisting with these essential programs.
Another important item I want to mention is recognizing our Members with 25 or more
years of Membership. These Members are and followed by years of service, Brian Belk
29, Robert Carres 28, Edward Debruyn 29, William J Gilmartin 27, John Obrien 25, Dennis
Smith 26, Mike Stringfellow 31, Christopher Sullivan 26, Carl Tankesley 39, Glenn Webb 40.
I speak for the entire membership when I say Thank You for your dedication and service.
Jerry Jerow our Membership Committee Chairman has recently informed me that there
are 112 SAL squadrons in the state and we are the 23rd largest. We are the third largest in
Southern Maryland District which has more than twice as many SALs as any other district.
Right now we are first in the number of memberships paid and second in the percent paid in
our district.
Several events coming up include a Motown Dance, Corn Hole Tournament and Bull
and Oyster Roast. Please refer to the Calendar for Dates & Times. Membership Meetings are
the 2nd. Tuesday of each Month at 7PM. We look forward to seeing you there. Thanks and see
ya at the Post.

MORE UNTOLD STORIES

In the process of helping the adjutant clean up some old membership files, as I reviewed piles of DD-214’s and
honorable discharge certificates for those who have gone to the post everlasting or have not renewed their memberships,
I was struck by the untold stories contained on those pieces of paper. While most of us performed our honorable military service in fairly routine and unexceptional circumstances, others were involved in activities that resonate a little
more strongly in the historical narrative of our conflicts. Below are some additional “stories” gleaned from those records. As in previous issues, I’ll keep the names anonymous, but know that these former Post 206 members’ service—
whether routine or heroic— are part of the fabric of our organization and its’ heritage.
- I was a World War II veteran from Maryland Park, MD, and I served in the Navy from 1944 to
1947. Before the war I was a mechanic for the Yellow Cab Company in Washington, D.C. I served
as a water tender (boilerman) on the USS Lamson, USS Mt. McKinley, and the USS Whetstone.
After the war I wanted to be an artist.
- I was a World War II veteran from Bel Air, MD where I was a high school teacher. I served in the
Army from 1942 to 1946 and was an infantry officer with the 321st Infantry Regiment of the 81st Division. I
served in the Philippines and Central Pacific. My awards included the Philippines Liberation Medal, the Vic
tory Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal and the Bronze Star.
- I was a World War II veteran who served as a storekeeper in the US Coast Guard from 1943 to 1946.
My duty stations included Coast Guard Patrol Bases Essington, PA, and Norfolk, VA, and the USS Cobb and
USS Breckinridge.
- I was a World War II veteran who served in the Navy as a ships cook third class from January 10,
1942 until 1945. I was from Springfield, MA, and before the war I worked in a movie theatre. I served on
the submarines USS Blackfish, and USS Flier, and at Submarine Base Dutch Ha rbor, Alaska. My awards included the WWII Victory Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Medal. (Editor’s note: The USS Flier (SS250) on August 12, 1944, while transiting on the surface of the Balabac Strait (Philippines) hit a naval mine
and sunk in less than a minute. Thirteen officers and men were able to escape. In February 2009 the Navy
announced that the Flier had been located in 330 feet of water)
- I was a Korean War veteran from Olean, NY, and I served from 1947 to 1953 as an ordnanceman
third class in the Navy. After the war I lived in Rose Haven and worked as a heavy equipment operator. My
awards included the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the China Service Medal, and
the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation.
- I was Korean War era veteran and served in the Navy as a yeoman third class from 1952 to 1955. I
was born in Washington, D.C. My duty stations included Fleet Air Ship Wing One at Lakehurst, NJ. My
decorations included the National Defense Service Medal, the Navy Occupation Medal (European clasp), and
the Good Conduct Medal.

- I was an Air Force veteran who served from 1961 to 1964 as a construction draftsman with the 70th
Field Maintenance Squadron of the Strategic Air Command at Clinton Sherman AFB, OK. The base operated
B-52 bombers. I was from Lewistown, PA. My awards included the Good Conduct Medal.
- I was a Vietnam veteran from Washington, D.C. I served in the Army from 1967 to 1969 as a specialist 5. I was a gas turbine generator repairman with the 459th Signal Battalion near Nha Trang. My awards
included the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service and Vietnam Campaign Medals, and the
Good Conduct Medal.
- I was a Vietnam era veteran from Cheverly, MD, and I served in the Marine Corps as a private first
class from 1969 to 1970. I was a tracked vehicle repairman with Marine Construction Battalion Camp Pendleton, CA. My awards included the National Defense Service Medal and the Marksmanship Badge (M-14).
- I was a World War II veteran who served in the Army from 1942 to 1945 as a reconnaissance car
commander with the 691st Tank Destroyer Battalion. I was a staff sergeant and before the war I was a crate
packer from Baltimore, MD. I was qualified as an expert with the M-1 rifle and Thomson submachine gun. I
served in Normandy, Northern France, the Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. My decorations included
the WWII Victory Medal.
- I was Korean War veteran from Washington, D.C. I served as a staff sergeant in the Air Force from
1952 to 1956 as a radio repairman with the 2nd Strategic Support Squadron. My awards included the Korean
Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, and Good Conduct Medal. I was separated at Castle AFB
California.
- I was Vietnam veteran and career Air Force officer, serving from 1958 to 1979 as an air operations
officer and pilot. I flew C-123’s and EC-135’s with a reconnaissance electronic warfare squadron. My awards
included the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross
with Palm, and the Airmen’s Medal.
- I was a World War II veteran who served in the Army from 1934 to 1945 as a private first class. I
was a farmer from Northfield, VT. I served as a military policeman and was wounded in action on Guadalcanal on July 25, 1943. I recovered at Walter Reed Hospital. My awards included the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.
I was a World War II veteran from Leesburg,VA. I served in the Navy from 1941 to 1944 as a lieutenant. I was a torpedo bomber pilot and stationed at Naval Air Station Ford Island (Hawaii) and Naval Air Station Barbers Point (Hawaii). Before the war I was a plant worker with Thompson Dairy Company in Washington, D.C. My awards included the American Defense Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon, Air Medal, and Victory Medal.

THE HANLEY FAMILY
The Post received the following letter from Rosalie Hanley-Safreed, one of our oldest
members. It contains quite a tale of military service and sacrifice that I thought was worth
sharing with our membership.
July 14, 2014
“To Members of Post 206:
Just wanted to bring me up to date with you all. Since I am 93 years old now I don’t
dine [out] so as a result I don’t get to see you all. To bring you up to date, there were
four of us (the Hanley Family) in World War II—one in the Pacific theater, one North
Africa and Italy, one made the Normandy invasion and was killed at the Battle of Saint
Lo, and then “me”. I was one of the first women to join the Army. My father
[Daniel J. Hanley] was in World War I and he organized our American Legion Post #46
at Benwood, West Virginia.
I went to Normandy three years ago and was in the area my brother served. I was given
a medal and award by the French Government for his giving his life for his country and
also for the liberation of France. I am 93 years old and still active. I also was interviewed by a Boy Scout and aided him in his becoming an Eagle Scout. He interviewed
me for my history in the Army, and as a result it is recorded in the Library of Congress.
Well, my heart is with you all. I did not go on the bus trip [Honor Flight trip on April
26 to the WWII Memorial] you wrote to me about, but I had been interviewed down at
the WWII Memorial.
Well, my hand is getting tired so I’ll close—but just forget me not. I hope you will come
and say farewell when I make my trip to Lee Funeral Home.

Thanks to everyone's hard work and support, last year we were able to make sure that 1,000 local children had
a smile on Christmas morning. The need grows each year and we look forward to working with everyone during the 2014 holiday season.
Stalling Williams Post 206 will again be a US Marine Corp Reserve Toys for Tots drop-off location during
the 2014 season. Toys for Tots will be collecting new unwrapped toys for boys and girls ages newborn to 17
years old, and accept monetary donations for the purpose of purchasing toys during the months of October,
November and December. These toys will be distributed as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in Calvert
County, MD.

OPERATION SHOE BOX
Action continues to slow down in Afghanistan, but rest assured that Rosalie will
be sending out care packages till the last one comes home or she runs out of
names to send them to.! Don’t forget to check out the list of supplies needed
and if able drop off a couple of items on the list. Know a deployed Service Member serving in a war
zone? Drop off their name, military address, when they are expected to return to the States and we will add
them to our list so they can begin to receive some of these goodies for them and their fellow servicemen and
women. Rosalie would be happy to add them to her list, she treats each one as if they where part of her family
