Philip Jones is a motivational speaker based in Calgary. Born in Wales, he married and moved to Alberta at age 18. Following an enjoyable career in retail management, he turned to the writing and speaking business, addressing audiences across Canada, from Vancouver Island to St. John’s. Philip’s articles have been published in business magazines in the U.S. and the U.K. as well as in Canada. Keynote: Jo Gusman Diverse Brains, Diverse Learners: Understanding the Complex World of Your English Language Learners – With the significant increase of English language learners in K-­‐
12 schools nationwide, educators are struggling to find ways to effectively address their diverse linguistic and academic needs. Using Mind-­‐Brain-­‐Education Science principles, neurobiology of bilingualism and biliteracy research as her foundation, Jo Gusman will share a powerful framework, effective strategies, and personal insights to help educators better serve their culturally and linguistically diverse students and their families. Jo Gusman is the creator of the Foundation-­‐Frameworks-­‐Tools Model© and author of Practical Strategies for Accelerating the Literacy Skills and Content Learning of Your ELLs, and Accelerating Your ELLs Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary Development, and Reading Fluency. She is a co-­‐author of ACCESS: Building Literacy through Learning, a content-­‐
area program specifically designed for English language learners. Jo is the founder of New Horizons in Education; an education-­‐consulting firm, which is dedicated to assisting school districts create effective programs for their bilingual-­‐biliterate students and their families. 2

You will: • Gain new insights into your role as an advocate • Gain an understanding of the social-­‐action process and an experience of the rights and privileges of being a citizen advocate • Gain an appreciation of the process of change Derek Peterson is an International Child/Youth Advocate whose work has touched individuals, schools, and communities in NWT, Yukon, BC, and Alberta. He is one of a handful of youth development professionals who still works directly with teens AND with elected officials, professional educators, child care workers, youth development professionals, faith community leaders, etc. to change the whole world around the whole teen. 3
