October 26, 2014 The 30 Sunday in Ordinary Time Gospel: Matthew 22:34-40 th Theme: The Greatest Commandment—Love God by loving others. When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, and one of them, a scholar of the law tested him by asking, "Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?" He said to him, "You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments." For Faith Sharing: Questions of the Week Question 1 (for children): We show our love for Jesus by loving our friends and family. Share one way that you show your love. Question 2 (for youth): Jesus tells us that we are to love others as we love ourselves. Do you love yourself? Can you see the good that God has put within you? Do you find it easier to love others or yourself? Question 3 (for adults): Repeat the two commandments which Jesus teaches today in your own words. For each of them share how it has become part of your life. Mission Statement We, the Catholic community at Holy Name of Jesus Parish, graced by the Holy Spirit, are called to invite all people to experience the living and loving presence of Christ by nurturing the spiritual growth of all our members through energetic celebration of the sacraments, especially the Eucharist, daily prayer, lifelong study of our faith, witness, service and hospitality. Holy Name of Jesus Church Pastor’s Page Love of God and Love of Neighbor: Inseparable Commandments When Jesus is asked about the greatest commandments in the Law, He says (1) that we should love the Lord our God with our whole heart, our whole soul, our whole mind, and our whole strength. And then he says (2) that we should love our neighbor as we love ourselves. He adds a most important clarification when he says that this second commandment is related to the first. We frequently hear sermons about how any claim to love God that overlooks love of neighbor is empty and meaningless. We are quite clear that that constitutes an empty religion, a hypocritical piety. But I would like to explore the opposite error that people frequently make. Many say that they love humanity, they are committed to helping their fellow men and women, they want to alleviate human suffering, and they want to make the world a better place to live. But as for including God in the equation, they dismiss that as unnecessary. When we exclude God from the picture, we really seriously impoverish the love we claim to offer humanity. For in God we find the true nature of our fellow men and women. We recognize that human beings are created in God’s image and are thus endowed with unspeakable dignity. When we keep God first, we are less likely to allow our love to degenerate into something condescending, selfserving, or ego-centered. I have met many people in my life who basically live a form of secular humanism, and I personally find it so empty. Many of these people lack joy and hope, two of the most important God-given gifts found in the lives of believers who serve their fellow human beings because of their faith in God. Also, many secular humanists also lack humility, as they begin to see themselves as the saviors of the world. They grow impatient with others who do not join with them in their project True Christian love has three focal points: God, the other person, and myself, in that order. This tridimensional perspective prevents us from falling into the trap of believing that the entire future of my world depends upon me. And when we move to recognize in Jesus the perfect incarnation of God’s love, we find the missing piece to the jigsaw puzzle, and are thus able to love when the going gets tough, when love is unrequited, and when our loving attempts are met with hostility and persecution. Jesus’ ultimate self-sacrificial love as expressed by his death on the cross becomes our prime example of perfect love. And thus, through God’s grace, we become capable of self-sacrifice, and motivated to love others the way Christ loves us. God, through His Holy Spirit, then becomes our Teacher, and leads us in how we are to love our brothers and sisters, a process that is only nurtured through much prayer, discernment, and brutal honesty with ourselves. With love from your pastor, Fr. Edwin Gros, SJ A Prayer for the Week Almighty and ever-living God, strengthen our faith, hope, and love. May we do with loving hearts what you ask of us and come to share the life you promise. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
