President’s Letter
Dear Friends,
This is such a beautiful day! I wonder if this is our Indian Summer. I
hope all of your yard work and outside chores are taken care of because I’m sure these beautiful days won’t last.

Monday evening we had our monthly board meeting. We had a
guest, Bryan Emerson from Wright Patterson Air Force at our meeting with a proposal to partner with the Aerospace School of Medicine to provide cultural experiences for the members of that school.

Medical personnel from all over the world come to the Aerospace School of Medicine for
training. These people are Flight Doctors, nurses, evacuation persons, sanitation specialist and anyone who is related to medicine. Their stay at WPAFB can be from four days to
six months. In most cases the participants would be housed on base. One of the things
that is included in their training is an introduction to our culture.

Mr. Emerson would like for our club to participate in giving the foreign personnel an introduction to our culture. This would probably be with a reception where our interested
club members might be present and learn to know some of the participants.
We might be able to then take them to places that would interest them. Perhaps a Dragons Game, the Carillon, a family dinner, a holiday celebration would be possible.
Dick Graf, Past President

These people are screened very well before they are sent over to WPAFB. If something
like this is of interest to you, please let us know. The board voted to participate in this
partnership.
The rest of our meeting was spent in selecting destinations for a 2016 exchange. In last
month’s newsletter, I asked for suggestions for exchanges. One person outside of the
board members sent suggestions to me. We were not granted an exchange for 2015. We
do hope that we get one this year.
On Thursday 16 of us leave on a new adventure. We will be going to Turkey. We will
have a week’s home stay in Guzelbache with our hosts. We will then join the Dayton
Chamber of Commerce for a Classical Tour of Turkey. We pray for a peaceful and safe
journey.

XCHANGE NEWS:
UTBOUND EXCHANGE TO Güzelbahçe , TURKEY,
starts October, 30, 2014. After this home-stay, the am-
bassadors will join the tour sponsored by the Dayton Area Chamber of
Commerce from Nov. 6-18.
At the time you see this, sixteen ambassadors will
probably be settling in with their hosts in the suburbs
of Izmir, the third largest city in Turkey. They’re all
very excited in anticipation of making new friends and
seeing grand sights. The hosts are very excited too
and they have planned a busy week for us.
IZMIR is a large metropolis in the western extremity
of Anatolia. İzmir's metropolitan area extends along
the outlying waters of the Gulf of İzmir and inland to
the north across Gediz River's delta, to the east along
an alluvial plain created by several small streams and
to a slightly more rugged terrain in the south. The ancient city was known as Smyrna and the city was generally referred to as Smyrna in English, until the Turkish
Postal Service Law of 28 March 1930 made "İzmir" the internationally recognized name.
The city of İzmir is composed of eleven metropolitan districts. Of these, Konak district corresponds to historical İzmir. Almost all of these settlements are former district centers or neighborhoods which stood on their
own, with their own distinct features and temperament. According to the Turkish Statistical Institute, in 2012
the city of İzmir had a population of 3,401,994 and its metropolitan municipality 4,005,459.
Tourists enroute to Hadrian’s wall
İzmir has almost 3,500 years of recorded urban history
and possibly even longer as an advanced human settlement. Lying on an advantageous location at the head of a
gulf running down in a deep indentation midway on the
western Anatolian coast, the city has been one of the principal mercantile cities of the Mediterranean Sea for much
of its history. Its port is Turkey's primary port for exports
in terms of the freight handled and its free zone, a Turkish-U.S. joint-venture established in 1990, is the leader
among the twenty in Turkey. Its workforce, and particularly its rising class of young professionals, affirm their
name in an increasingly wider global scale and intensity.
Politically, it is considered a stronghold of the Republican People's Party.

(Continued from page 2)
İzmir hosted the Mediterranean Games in 1971 and the World University Games (Universiade) in
2005. It had a running bid submitted to the BIE to host the Universal Expo 2015, in March, 2008,
that was lost to Milan. Modern İzmir also incorporates the nearby ancient cities of Ephesus, Pergamon, Sardis and Klazomenai, and centers of international tourism such as Kuşadası, Çeşme, Mordoğan and Foça.
When the Ottomans took over İzmir in the 15th century, they did not inherit compelling historical
memories, unlike the two other keys of the trade network, namely Istanbul and Aleppo. Its emergence as a major international port by the 17th century was largely a result of the attraction it exercised over foreigners, and the city's European orientation.
The population of the city is predominantly Muslim, but secularism is very strong in this region of
Turkey. İzmir is also home to Turkey's second largest Jewish community after Istanbul, still 2,500
strong. The community is still concentrated in their traditional quarter of Karataş. The Levantines of
İzmir, who are mostly of Genoese and to a lesser degree of French and Venetian descent, live
mainly in the districts of Bornova and Buca.
The historic and modern sights of the area are too numerous to mention here. An internet search or
a guidebook would be needed to do the subject justice.

Oakwood Accordion Band
The Good Time Accordion Band (http://goodtimeaccordionband.com) provides entertainment and
engages the audience. When at a senior center or a nursing home they pass out lyrics and all then are
singing and enjoying the old tunes.
According to Charlie Campbell, “We usually play one or two times a month and during Oktoberfest we
do lots of those German tunes. Frequently someone will ask a special tune and one of us can usually
play it if we remember it!”
The most important aspect is that the audience are always smiling. They are enjoying the interaction,
the lyrics, and the old fashioned instruments. And according to Charlie Campbell, “…there are two
good guys and me!”

died Oct. 11 in Clearwater Fla. at the age of 100. Goldie was a member of our club and at
the festivities celebrating the club’s 30th anniversary, Goldie won the opportunity to “co-pilot” a Wright B

attested to in the Dayton Daily News obituary of Oct. 20.

A
s you think about our next inbound exchange here are
various ways you can help:
HOMESTAY HOST: You could host a couple or individual for that week in your home and for many of
the activities.
DINNER PARTY HOST: You could offer to host/provide a dinner party for approximately 8-10 ...it
would be the inbound guests plus their hosts.
DAY’S TOUR CHAIRPERSON: You could volunteer to organize one day of activities, working with the
Exchange Directors. You would make arrangements for the sites to be visited and plan an interesting, yet affordable lunch stop. We probably want (a) a downtown Dayton tour/day; (b) an
aviation history tour/day; (c) a rural adventure day; (d) other option.
DAY HOST: You could volunteer to accompany the inbound guests for a day of touring when their
house hosts have other commitments/responsibilities.
EVENT CHAIRPERSON: You could host or organize the welcome event or the farewell. Many times
these are potluck dinners, but it could be hor d’oeuvres or brunch.
