Message from the General Manager
Larry Harper
Fall is such a great time of year, when the temperatures begin cooling off and we finally
see some much needed rain. This October is shaping up to be very active and I hope
you have an opportunity to review the activities and make your plans to attend the
functions and events that are being offered.
The first event of the month will be a very informative and interactive Town Hall
meeting on Thursday, October 2, featuring Hayden Stewart and the Board as they
discuss the recent membership survey and the next steps to prepare for the future of
GHCC.
We also have scheduled a District 10 Candidate Forum on Thursday, October 16. As anyone who has had
to deal with the City of Austin can attest, electing the right candidate for our district is of significant
importance. Having an opportunity to hear their thoughts and objectives first hand and an opportunity to
meet them personally will be instrumental in electing the right person for District 10.
On another subject, you will begin noticing recycling containers next to the regular trash receptacles around
the clubhouse, tennis courts, pool and golf course. The recycle containers are intended for plastic, glass,
paper/cardboard, aluminum and tin/steel (please do not include food waste, films, plastic bags, plastic wrap,
or foam cups/containers in the recycle containers; these can be disposed of in the regular trash receptacles).
We appreciate your help with controlling our waste and taking part in the City of Austin’s efforts to reduce
landfill refuse.
Until next time!

Message from the Clubhouse Manager
Michael Stoddard
In reviewing the summer and looking at the fall schedule of events: meetings,
tournaments, dinners and parties, all I can say is WOW, what a busy year it is at Great
Hills! We have seen an impressive increase in member private parties, dinners and
meetings, and I would like to express my appreciation to everyone
who has used their Club for their events.
As a reminder, the holiday season is booking up fast, so if you would like to use the Club
for a holiday party, please call me or Hailey as soon as possible. With that as an intro, I
would like to announce that Hailey Hernandez has joined the management team at
Great Hills as the Assistant Clubhouse and Banquet Manager. She has a background in
tournament coordination and has experience in many areas of golf club management.
Coming up in October, we have the GHCC Town Hall Meeting on Thursday the 2nd, and
the adult member party on Saturday the 11th - so, come, party and “Cowboy Up” at the
fall party! And, don’t forget to bring the kids for the Club’s annual Halloween party on
Friday the 24th. There will be a Build-A-Burger buffet along with some kid food items, a Moon Bouncer,
pumpkin decorating contest and hay rides.
SAGE returned in September from their summer hiatus and enjoyed good food, wine and fellowship. SAGE
members, be sure and mark your calendars on Thursday the 30th for your next dinner.
We have been expanding our wine and beer selections in the clubhouse and now have a new wine and beer
menu. If you have any wine and beer selections that you want us to explore adding to the menu, please feel
free to let me know.
Here’s to a fun and exciting fall at Great Hills and…I’ll see you around the Clubhouse!

Message from the Head Golf Professional
Rick Arnett
After watching some amazing shots, and some not so good, in the Daniel Cup tournament, I
thought I would talk about how to better judge your chips around the green. You know those
short little chip shots that should be so easy, but are not. Some of them go too far, some of
them don’t go far enough. Some of them pop up too high, some of them don’t get high enough.
So what do I do you ask?
Consistently controlling your chip shots is a key to getting up and down and shooting your lowest scores, and it’s
easier than you think.
Focus on these simple tips to keep your chip shots under control:
Start by loading your weight on your lead leg. For right handed golfers this means starting your swing with the
majority of your weight on your left leg. This may sound backwards, but with a small swing like a chip a weight
transfer is not necessary, and you’ll be able to avoid a lot of unnecessary movement by starting with the majority
of your weight on your lead leg.
Control your distance with the length of your backswing. Too many of the golfers I see try to control how far their
chip shots travel by swinging harder or softer. This is extremely difficult to do consistently. Instead focus on
controlling the distance of your chip shots just like you do on your putts – with the length of your backswing. For a
shirt chip use a short backswing, for a long chip use a longer backswing. And remember, ALWAYS accelerate
the club head through the ball.
Keep a strong lead wrist through impact. For right handed golfers letting your left wrist collapse and flipping your
club head through impact is one of the most sure fire ways to lose control over your chip shots and launch them
way too high in the air. Instead keep your lead wrist strong and ahead of the club head as it passes through the
impact zone only letting it break after your ball has landed on the green.
Practice these 3 tips next time you’re on the chipping green and before you know it you’ll be getting up and down
and turning those bogeys into pars.

The latest MGA tournament was contested on September 6. A
scramble format, with a twist, was presented to the tournament
players. The format called for 4-man teams, with each team
breaking into two 2-man teams. The 2-man teams rotated during 2nd
the round, so each player was able to play a 2-man scramble with
one of his 3 other partners every 6 holes.
131
At the tournament conclusion, only a few shots separated the
teams, with the foursome of Hjelm, Robinson, Anton and Watson T3
taking first place.
132
As for the 2014 MGA money list, Alan Michalik is holding on to a
slim lead over Art Cook, Corey Thrash and Tim
Nugent. Determining the winner of the money list title is going to T3
come down to the wire this year. The updated MGA money list can
be found on the bulletin board in the Pro Shop.
132
There are only 2 MGA tournaments left this year, on November 1st T3
and December 13th. Make sure you sign up in the Pro Shop or online. See you out on the course!

Message from the Golf Course Superintendent
Scott Maki
With the arrival of rain showers and cooler temperatures with less humidity, I hope
everyone has had a chance to get out and take advantage of this beautiful weather and the
“green up” on the golf course. Now, the water reservoirs are at full capacity and should
supply the course with enough water to get through the cool season without needing to buy
water from the City.
The driving range tee has been continuing to mature and develop an improved practice
surface that is becoming more resilient to the daily wear and tear. To ensure longevity of the teeing surface,
the Green Committee submitted an interesting article on how to hit shots from a driving range tee “properly”.
I can say that as the staff makes repairs, the various wear patterns determine greatly the amount of time
required for recovery. On that note, the staff will be aerifiying the driving range tee one last time before the
cooler temperatures. This will help fill in divots without bringing in unnecessary amounts of sand and will
help keep the tee level.
The greens are performing well. The rain has helped them tremendously (along with the entire golf course).
The mowing heights will be raised slightly to accommodate the reduced number of daylight hours.
Additionally, the weaker areas of the greens will be dotted to allow for their mowing heights to be segregated
again for improved winter tolerance in these shaded and high traffic areas.
This month, the staff will be focusing on keeping the roughs mowed as frequently as possible. This will
continue while the rough is growing to improve playability. Additional efforts from the staff will be focused on
the #10 Blue teeing area. The staff should have this teeing area completed and sodded by the second week
of this month. New irrigation wires will be run to the tee after the sod has begun growing in. The staff will
also be finishing up the split rail fence by the #1 teeing area. Additionally, irrigation repairs will be occurring
on the various weeping heads around the course.
As always, if you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to email me at
[email protected], or catch me on the course!
Congratulations
to Steve Wood!

DIVOTS ON THE DRIVNG RANGE
The Great Hills maintenance crew did a fantastic job preparing the new, improved driving range. The new
turf is great to practice on. To keep the range in great shape here is information that will help all of us who
practice do just that!
Does Your Divot Pattern Help Or Hurt The Golf Course?
By Ty A. McClellan, Manager, Green Section Education (USGA)
September 17, 2014
Golfers love to practice. But have
you ever wondered how the pattern
of your divots on the practice range
tee affects the golf course? With
every swing of an iron, a divot of
turf is usually removed. A small
bucket of golf balls (typically 25 or
30 balls) can remove a lot of turf.
And if you’re really working on your
short game it is not uncommon to
hit 100 shots or more. This means
a lot of divots which require a lot of
turf recovery before a tee stall may
be returned to the same location.
Golfers have a big impact on the
amount of turf coverage and To maximize use of your practice range tee, consider the impact that
performance of practice range tees. divot patterns have on turf removal and rotation of tee stalls. In this
How one practices not only photo, an 8-iron was used to hit 30 golf shots on a creeping bentgrass
influences how much turf is tee.
removed with each swing, but also
how quickly the turf will recover. The three most common divot patterns – scattered, concentrated and linear
– can be seen in the photo.
A scattered divot pattern (BAD) removes the most amount of turf because a full divot is removed with
every swing. Scattering divots results in the most turf loss and uses up the largest area of a tee stall. This
forces the golf facility to rotate tee stalls most frequently and often results in an inefficient use of the tee.
Although divots come in all sizes, the average iron shot is believed to remove a divot 3 inches wide by 6.5
inches long for a total of 19.5 square inches. After just 30 shots, or a small bucket of balls, 4.1 square feet
of turf are removed, given a typical practice routine (30 shots x 19.5 in2 = 585 in2 / 144 in2 = 4.1 ft2).
A concentrated divot pattern (BAD) removes all turf in a given area. While this approach does not
necessarily result in a full-sized divot removed with every swing, by creating a large void in the turf canopy
there is little opportunity for timely turf recovery.
The linear divot pattern (PREFERRED) involves placing each shot directly behind the previous divot. In so
doing, a linear pattern is created and only a small amount of turf is removed with each swing. This can
usually be done for 15 to 20 shots before moving sideways to create a new line of divots. So long as a
minimum of 4 inches of live turf is preserved between strips of divots, the turf will recover quickly. Because
this divot pattern removes the least amount of turf and promotes quick recovery, it is the preferred method.
Each shot is played directly behind the previous divot, subsequent divots are reduced to an average size of

LET’S DISCUSS PROPER TENNIS ETIQUETTE AND ATTIRE
As we grow as a tennis club at Great Hills Country Club, we will need to be cognizant of
proper tennis etiquette and appropriate tennis attire. Crucial tennis etiquette includes how
to properly walk through a court that has a match in progress, how to ask for your ball
after it enters an adjacent court, and what constitutes obtrusive levels of noise next to a court that contains a
match in progress.
If you are about to cross through a court (with match in progress) the proper etiquette is to wait until the point
is finished, and then walk briskly to your court. If there is a match of record being played (League or
Tournament match), and you have a foursome wanting to cross through, it is appropriate to wait until a
change over. This is how crowds are controlled at the US Open and many other tournament venues.
If your ball enters an adjacent court, say “ball please” to have the players return your ball. If you are playing
next to a match of record or a serious match, it is proper etiquette to keep your noise level/chatter down so
as to not disturb the players next to your court.
As to what constitutes proper tennis attire, the most important element is to wear appropriate tennis shoes,
which means shoes designed for tennis. Track shoes, jogging shoes, hard sole shoes, flip flops, or bare feet
do not constitute proper tennis shoes. Men need to wear shirts to play on the Great Hills courts. It would be
most desirable that the shirts be collared and the shorts proper tennis shorts, not gym shorts or cut offs.
Women need to wear appropriate tennis attire as well, skirts, dresses, and shorts are appropriate. Bikini
tops, halter tops, bathing suits, and gym clothes are not considered appropriate. Thank you for your
cooperation, members!
2014 October Rules Scenario
When the ball is in play, another ball rolls onto court. A let is called. The server had previously
served a fault. Is the server now entitled to a first service or second service?
First service. According to USTA Rules of Tennis 23: “In all cases when a let is called, except when a
service let is called on a second service, the whole point shall be replayed.”

OCTOBER = FREE PRIVATE PICKLEBALL CLINICS!
The “Old Pickler” continues to demonstrate his wisdom and experience. He knows not
everyone can attend Pickleball clinics at scheduled times. He also knows not everyone
embraces “group” lessons. So, he is offering the opportunity for you and your spouse,
you and a friend, you and your family, you and many friends, or any groups to have a
PRIVATE introduction to Pickleball clinic. All you need to do is send an email to the “Old
Pickler” ([email protected]) or call 512-794-8952, and arrange a day and time for your PRIVATE
Pickleball clinic. All equipment is provided, so just “make the call”. Take advantage of this opportunity to
learn the basics of Pickleball and/or share this fast growing sport with your GHCC friends and family
members. Pickleball is played on GHCC tennis court #8.
If you have a Pickleball rule or tactic question, please send it to: [email protected].
Now that the summer heat is behind us, we are hoping to have increased participation at our Monday and
Thursday morning D. I. P. (Drop-In-Pickleball) sessions that start around 9:00 a.m. The golf course is
closed on Mondays, so come get some fun exercise. Pickleball is played on GHCC tennis court #8.

SWIMMING POOL HOURS AND GATE CODE
October 1st the pool will be swim at your own risk. If you would like to continue swimming at your own risk all
pool rules must be followed and a Pool Waiver must be signed and turned into the Aquatics Director or front
desk staff.
 The pool gate code will be changed on October 1st.
 Once the pool waiver is turned in you will receive the new gate code.
 RUSH practice began September 2nd. Members are welcome to use the pool at that time for lap
swimming. Please talk to a swim coach on deck and we will be happy to provide you with a lane.
Great Hills Country Club
Aquatics Facility Release of Liability Waiver
The pool gate code will change in September every year. A new waiver must be completed each year to receive pool privileges
when the pool is not open for regular business.
If Great Hills Aquatic Rush (RUSH) is holding practice, ask one of the coaches and one lane will be opened for adult GHCC
members to swim laps. This may include sharing a lane, instead of a dedicated open lane. No children will be permitted to swim
unattended while their parents swim laps. If a child distracts the swim team practice they will be asked to leave. The
following procedures shall be observed at all times:
 The pool will only be used during the hours of 5:00 am to 8:00 pm Tuesday through Sunday. (Swimming at your own risk is not
permitted on Mondays).
 Swimmers using the pool must be 18 years of age or older and shall observe the posted pool rules at all times. Children under
18 must be accompanied by an adult parent or guardian at all times.
 The gate code is intended for member’s use only and must not be given to or shared with anyone else. Guests are not permitted!
 Food or beverages will not be permitted to be brought into the pool area, with exception of bottled water. No glass in the pool
area!!!
 During winter months, there are thermal covers that must be completely removed before swimming. When the swim team is
using the pool, they will remove and replace the covers. Members of GHCC may swim laps as outlined above. In the event the
swim team is not using the pool, it will be the responsibility of the member to remove and replace the covers so as to not lose
heat from the water.
 If you are planning on swimming during the winter, please contact the Aquatics Director for a tutorial on how to remove the
tarps.
 Children under the age of 18 are not permitted in the pool once the covers are on for the winter. Thermal covers may only
be removed by rolling them onto the stand. They should never be folded over as it will cause damage to the cover.
 The code for the lock box may be received by from the Aquatics Director, Samantha Stemmermann:
[email protected], upon receipt of this form.
I agree to abide by the above policies and understand that failure to do so may result in termination of my pool privileges for the
remainder of the year. I understand that while using the pool without lifeguards on duty I am swimming at my own risk and am
liable for anything that may occur and I hold Great Hills Country Club harmless in such instances.
