PAGE 5 www.trinitylansdale.com ANNUAL COAT DRIVE This is a reminder that Sarah Circle will be holding our annual coat drive for the children of Patterson School in Philadelphia on November 1, 2, and 9th in Hyson Hall. Last year with your generous support, we provided 400 coats, hats and gloves to help the children of Patterson who otherwise would not have warm coats for this winter. The cost of a coat, hat and gloves will be $25.00 this year and we hope you will all support this worthy mission of Sarah Circle. The children and parents are always so thankful for our help. We have been doing this project for many years and hope to continue for many more. ALL SAINTS SUNDAY Sunday, November 2nd FIRST HOLY COMMUNION Sunday, November 9th PRESENTATION OF BIBLES Sunday, November 23rd WINTERFEST Sunday, November 23rd COMMUNITY INTERFAITH The members of the Circle have been purchasing the coats and gloves and many hands have been knitting the hats for us. We will be selling the coats on Saturday evening service on November 1st and Sunday November 2nd and November 9th. Please join us at the WELCA table to purchase your items. If you like to shop, we also have bags available for you to take and purchase a coat yourself and return it to us for delivery. Hope to see you all in November. Some ideas to think about – skip a dinner out and purchase a coat, purchase a coat in honor or memory of a loved one, have your child pick out a coat and use it as a teaching moment. I am sure there are many more ideas we can all think about with a donation to help a child in need. www.trinitylansdale.com PAGE 6 THANKSGIVING EVE WORSHIP SERVICE Wednesday, November 26th Trinity Book Club October 28th meeting at 6:30 pm Book: Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn Host: Nancy Mellon, Harleysville Phone: 215-368-2483 Email: [email protected] Collections for Thanksgiving Dinner Baskets Manna on Main Street, located in Lansdale, will be distributing Thanksgiving Dinner baskets to less fortunate neighbors in our community in late November. C OMMEMORATIONS FOR THE W EEK As a means of recognizing the witness of exemplary Christians throughout church history, Evangelical Lutheran Worship includes many commemorations which may be observed in corporate worship as well as in personal devotions. Sunday, October 26, 2014-Philipp Nicolai, died 1608; Johann Heermann, died 1647; Paul Gerhardt, died 1676; hymn writers-These great hymn writers all worked in seventeenth-century Germany in times of war and plague. Nicolai, a pastor, lost 1,300 parishioners to plague, 170 in one week. He wrote "O Morning Star, how fair and bright" and "Wake, awake, for night is flying." Heermann's hymns, including "Ah, holy Jesus," often express the emotions of faith. Gerhardt, perhaps the greatest Lutheran hymn writer, was a pastor in Berlin. Tuesday, October 28-Simon and Jude, Apostles-We know little about these apostles. Simon is listed as "the zealot" or Cananean in New Testament lists. Jude, also called Thaddeus, asked Jesus at the last supper why he had revealed himself to the disciples but not to the world. Friday, October 31-Reformation Day-By the end of the seventeenth century, many Lutheran churches celebrated a festival commemorating Martin Luther's posting of the Ninety-five Theses, a summary of abuses in the church of his time. At the heart of the reform movement was the gospel, the good news that it is by grace through faith that we are justified and set free. Saturday, November 1-All Saints Day-The custom of commemorating all of the saints of the church on a single day goes back at least to the third century. All Saints Day celebrates the baptized people of God, living and dead, who make up the body of Christ. On this day or the following Sunday, many congregations will remember the faithful who have died during the past year. Keep them steadfast in your word, protect and comfort them in times of trial, defend them against all enemies of the gospel, and bestow on the church your saving peace, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
