Being Good Stewards
By Greg Shea, Council President
Stewardship. Just hearing the word makes
some of us cringe. The first thing that comes to
mind is that someone is going to ask us for money. And that may well be true. But stewardship
also defines the position and duties of a steward,
a person who acts as the surrogate of another or
others, especially by managing property or financial affairs.
I write this on Sunday evening, September
14th. Earlier today the congregation voted to approve a motion submitted by Council to sell the
Green and Sture properties. I suggest that this is
a classic definition of acting as good stewards.
Let me tell you why.
Thirty two years ago the members of this congregation invested in a piece of property that has
come to be known as the Sture House. For thirty
two years that property has been able to provide
for members of our community, by providing
meals and groceries.
In the same way, eleven years ago the congregation acquired the Green property. That property has been used to provide shelter.
Many of our congregation members, past and
present, have devoted enormous amounts of time
and talents to serve at these properties and to
maintain them. All of these things are tremendous acts of stewardship by anyone’s measure.
And for more than one hundred years our
members have provided the home for this congregation, our church building. It is our turn as
stewards to take care of what has been entrusted
to us. The sale of the other properties represents
a return on our earlier investments, a return that
can now be used to responsibly care for our
home, so that those who come behind us may also have a place of worship where the Good News
of Jesus Christ is proclaimed.
Does that sound like good stewardship to
you? It does to me. To borrow from Matthew
25:23, well done good and faithful servants.
But our work does not end with the sale of the
properties. Many will continue to provide time
and talents, and I expect that we will continue to
find a way to fund social ministry in our commu(Continued on page 2)

nity. For many years our benevolence in terms of
financial donations have been buried within the
mortgages and maintenance portions of our
budgets, and not actually acknowledged as be-
nevolent gifts. Selling the properties will eventually remove the back door giving from the budget. We must now transition into being intentional
about our financial giving to other organizations.
Give that some thought as we enter into Stewardship season.
