Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time - October 26, 2014 Dear Parishioners, There has been an uproar in recent weeks regarding the Synod on the Family which concluded its first stage deliberations and discussions last week. We remember that in 2013, Pope Francis announced there would be an Extraordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops in the following year to discuss topics related to the family and evangelization. This is the synod which just concluded. It was also announced that there would be a second part to the Synod on the Family, the Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, which will be held in 2015. Both of these assemblies will help Pope Francis form pastoral guidelines in meeting the many challenges of the family. What seemed to incite a great deal of hysteria, particularly in the secular press and media, was the interim report, relatio pos disceptationem, which was released prior to the closing of the Synod. In no way was this report intended to be a definitive document on this subject, but rather a ‘what we’ve been talking about so far’ accounting. Unfortunately, the secular media completely misreported it and claimed the Vatican was opening the doors to approving everything from communion for the divorced and remarried to gay marriage, and calling it an ‘earthquake event.’ This could not be any further from the truth. What appeared was in no way a definitive or formal teaching of the Catholic Church; it simply communicated, in a transparent way, what the bishops had been talking about. Fr. Robert Barron said, “It conveys, to be sure, a certain consensus around major themes and trends that have been evident in the conversations, dominant emphases in the debates, etc., but it decidedly does not represent “the teaching” of the Pope or the bishops.” Even the controversial topics such as homosexuality and communion for the divorced and remarried which the Synod discussed, in no way veered from what the Church currently teaches and what we would find in the official Catechism of the Catholic Church. This is only the first step along the way of a long journey regarding the pastoral approach to families in the modern age which will not ultimately conclude for another couple of years. It is unfortunate that the secular press misreported the significance of this document, but it is comforting to know that we can’t believe everything that we read and hear in the media. Este informe de ninguna manera fue un documento definitivo, pero mejor dicho un ‘lo que hemos estado hablando del hasta ahora’ informe. Los medios seculares, lamentablemente, completamente mis-relatado y afirmó que el Vaticano abría las puertas a la aprobación de todo de la comunión para el divorciado y volvió a casarse a matrimonio gay. Esto no podía ser algún otro de la verdad. Lo que apareció no era de ninguna manera una enseñanza definitiva o formal de la Iglesia Católica; simplemente se comunicó, de un modo transparente, de qué los obispos habían estado hablando.
