In Memory Of Faith-Sweet Cases
No child should ever feel like trash. Imagine, one day,
someone comes to you and says "Take your favorite belongings. We have to leave. Now. You have 5
minutes." No child deserves to move from home to home
with all their precious belongings in a TRASH BAG.
These kids did not choose this life. Please help us by sharing this or purchasing a bag for a child.
And with the 1 year anniversary of Faith's sudden passing
coming in October, I felt that this is a significant way to
celebrate the life of a wonderful child who was in foster
care.
You don't have to be a foster parent to help a foster child.

Mark your calendars and spread the word...The Bethel Harvest Fair is set for Saturday, November 8th. Everyone is
welcome to join in the celebration. We are looking for volunteers willing to help in any area of the fair; advertising,
holiday shop, luncheon, crafts, bake sale and attic treasures, just to name a few. We will also need people to volunteer in setting up the day before the fair and cleaning up after the conclusion of the fair.
We are now accepting items for the White Elephant Room on Sunday mornings and Wednesdays from 4:30 to 5:30.
You may contact Marie Sturdevant or Christina Nelson if other arrangements need to be made. We will not be accepting electronics, televisions, computers, stereos, VCR’s, DVD players or printers. We are planning a silent auction and will be looking for donated items for theme baskets such as children's crafts, movie night, and sports. We
welcome your ideas for other silent auction theme baskets.
There has been a change in craft night and we will announce other opportunities to work on craft projects for the
fair. We will need people willing to donate homemade goodies for the bake sale.

The Fall season is upon us! We will be celebrating several special festivals including Reformation Sunday on Oct. 26th, All Saints' Sunday on Nov. 5th, and Thanksgiving on Nov. 27th
at 9am. We will also be planning Advent & Christmas services, liturgies and music. More in
the next Visitor!
Our choirs have resumed!!! Come join us and be heard! The Bells of Bethel rehearses Thursdays from 5:45pm to 6:45 pm. All ages are welcome!! If you have any questions please contact our Director, Adam Hanks at [email protected] or 508-838-1427. the Bethel
Singers rehearse Thursdays also from 7:00-8:30. Contact our Director, Greg Martiros if you

SOCIAL MINISTRY
Reaching out to a world in need.
As we begin to rebuild our Social Ministries team, our focus will be to bring attention to those needs through our ongoing ministries,
and to develop a vision and give direction as we bring our resources together. Our goal is to bring attention to different ministries
through education and future temple talks. We will continue to partner with Auburn Youth and Family Services to meet the needs
within our own community. We will also continue to support national and international programs through the ELCA. We wish to
extend our gratitude to those individuals who have continued in an ongoing outreach from our Bethel family to a worldwide community in need.
Sunday, October 19th Bethel will be joining in The Auburn Walk for Hunger, which will benefit our local community in supporting Auburn Youth and Family Services Food Pantry and Kateri’s Kitchen at North American Martyrs. Registration begins at 12:45 at Auburn Youth and Family Services, Pheasant Court, Auburn. The 2
½ mile walk will begin at 1:00. All money will go to help local families. The mission of AYFS food pantry program is to help alleviate hunger for Auburn’s children and families, as well as educate families
about the importance of good nutrition. In 2013, through the collaboration with the Worcester Community Food Bank, 11,607 pounds of food for the Food Pantry was distributed. Monthly, approximately
175 individuals within the Auburn community are given assistance. Kateri’s Kitchen is considered an
“emergency kitchen,” providing food for three days, for those who are in need. It is open every Saturday
from 10-12, serving area families in need of assistance. Monthly, approximately 300 individuals within
the greater Auburn community are given food assistance. If you are interested in walking, donating, or if you have any questions,
please see Lee Fenby. We hope to see Bethel well represented in this event. There will also be a need for help at the church during
the walk, helping to distribute water and apples to the walkers as they pass by Bethel between 1:00 and 2:00.
As part of our international outreach, Bethel will be participating in the support of Mission to Liberia, whose purpose is to provide and support charitable and humanitarian services, facilities and related activities in Liberia. Many of the medical services in
parts of Liberia have been suspended as a result of the ongoing Ebola epidemic. This has created a need for first aid supplies for
families and individuals. Our adult education class will be accepting offerings of items for first aid kits for Mission to Liberia. The
following items are needed:
• First Aid Cream (usually Neosporin)
• Band Aides
• Aspirin (81 mg)
• Anti-diarrhea medications (pills ship the easiest) 2 per kit
• Pedialyte powder packs (or something similar) 2 per kit
• Quart size storage bags to package the items.
There is also a need for flip flops and eye glasses. All members, young and old, are encouraged to contribute any of the above mentioned items. A future date will be set aside for an intergenerational event to assemble and package kits and other items gathered.
We will continue our support of other ministries including Jeremiah’s Inn, where Bethel sponsors the Bylund Room, Dismas House,
Interfaith Hospitality Network and Woyatan Lutheran Church.
Dismas House: Some people have asked how they can become involved in supporting the ministry of Dismas
House. Bethel is serving dinner at Dismas on following dates:

Woyatan Lutheran Church - Remember our Mission Partners--The Woyatan Lutheran Church, Rapid City,
SD. It's time to gather all your decent wearable clothing and bring it to church and let's reach out as we did last
spring to and bring these fellow Lutherans, who happen to be Lacota Indians. Rapid City is located in the second poorest county in the USA and this church is only one of four Lutheran Churches that incorporate the Native American Spirituality into our Lutheran liturgy. Help us do our part as Mission Partners to help lift the
heavy yoke off their shoulders as we give them clothing without cost. All gifts of clothing need to be here by
OCTOBER 12, when they will be packed and shipped free, thanks to the generosity of a former member of
Bethel.

COUNCIL CORNER
Peace to one and all! Fall is now officially upon us which means we have resumed our regular schedule with
Christian Ed Sundays at 10:15 for all ages and Wednesdays at 6:30 for grades 7-9 and Choirs rehearsing at 5:45
(Bells) and 7:00 (Bethel Singers). Please consider joining us!
As I write our Congregation Council continues to be busy on a variety of different things. We are actively working to continue the conflict transformation process with Margaret Keyser.
We have planned our next session for Saturday, October 4th from 10-1. As
I said last month, in order for Bethel to fully complete this process we are
looking to fund the remaining sessions. We have been blessed to have been
able to budget for this at the annual meeting and also we have received several donations from Bethel members, our Synod and even our own Bishop,
Jim Hazelwood! Our finance people continue to request that anyone in the
congregation who either has not yet donated and has planned to or might be
interested in doing so to please contact them. We are looking at possibly 2-3
more sessions to complete the process. Please speak to our Finance Committee to learn how you can help!
This fall we continue to reestablish our Committees & Teams as part of our rebirth. The Council is actively reviewing the current structure of our Committees & Teams and is looking how to simplify things and make serving less burdensome and “scary”. Some of our existing Committees & Teams will become more task oriented.
This means if someone were to serve it would mean a few meetings (depending on the tasks) and performing a
task or two. For example, the Property Team would meet quarterly to prepare a budget, develop a list of shortterm and long-term projects with their tasks. These tasks would be divided up among team members and other
volunteers and once the tasks are completed then the team member and/or volunteer assigned to those task(s)
would be finished (unless he/she is interested in serving longer on the team). This model is in use in other congregations in our own Synod. Our other teams include Communications, Stewardship, Fellowship and Evangelism. The four Committees are Christian Education, Worship & Music, Social Ministry & Finance. These
Committees have over sight of multiple areas of ministry and a “team” model would not work. In addition the
Time & Abilities form will be available next month. Here you can pick and choose how you can serve our Lord.
Some of the projects and tasks our Teams will be working on are included. These are some of the ongoing projects. I encourage you to seriously consider how you can help Bethel in service to God, our Community and one
another! In addition Consecration Sunday will soon be upon us and it will be time to make our faith promises
and plan the budget for 2015. Our ministries and staff are funded largely by those faith promises.
Lastly, as you should have seen and heard, the Church Fair is making a comeback under the direction of Marie
Sturdevant and Christina Nelson. Proceeds from the Fair are used for special/unbudgeted projects that would
otherwise use funds from other ministries. Contact Christina or Marie and ask them how you can help! I am reminded of the hymn, “Lord, You Give the Great Commission” (ELW #579, verse 2): “Lord you call us to your
service...draw us closer in community. With the Spirit’s gifts empower us for the work of ministry. Join your
Council in kicking off another year of service to the Lord by picking one way you can help Bethel live out its
purpose!

6 Ways to Use Your Smartphone For Video in Church Communications
(& 4 Tips to Make it Good!)
I've been thinking about this #IceBucketChallenge and how it's proven
that smartphone videos are simple to produce and effective in communicating. How are you using the movie studio in your pocket to
communicate with your people? Here are some ideas you can try this
week!
Volunteer Thank You // After your services this weekend ... take out
your phone and shoot a quick video that talks about how amazing your
team is and gives them examples from that weekend about how they
went above and beyond!
Devotional Thought // Have you been struck by something you ran into
during your devotions that you think could have broader application?
Take a minute and record that video and share it on your social media
network of choice!
Behind The Scenes Videos // Is your band rehearsing for an upcoming
special event? Is your leadership team working on a special series at
your church? Take your people behind the scenes and let them see it!
{Here's a behind the scenes video I shot on a clean water trip last
spring that got huge traction in our church ... I loved helping people
hear from the field!}
Quick Interviews // Even though selfie videos can be super effective in
communicating what you need to ... grab another church leader, bring
them in front of the camera and get their take on what's going on. The
added dynamic of another person will give the video lots more energy!
Family Ministry to Parents // Much of what happens in our family ministry environments is now hidden behind security barriers so the "wrong
people" don't have access to kids. One of the downsides of this is that
parents don't often get to see what happens in your ministry area. Take
a video this weekend and send it to your parents so they can see the
good stuff you're doing!
PrePre-Game Video // Videos shot with your smart phone can we be
viewed almost instantaneously by your community ...why not shoot a
video before a special event or weekend service and send it your volunteers to get them excited about your time together. Let them in on how
you are doing going into the weekend ... and thank them for serving!
Here are four simple tips to remember when shooting video with your
smartphone to make the most of them!
Simple Script // Taking a minute to write out even a simple script can
ensure you don't ramble on and on. I will often use post-it notes on the
back of the phone with a few talking points to keep me on track.
Doesn't need to be complex but you do need to plan it out.
Look Into the Sun // Shooting outdoors ensures the best lighting possible for your smartphone. You want the smartphone between you and
the sun ... so remember that you'll always be looking into the sun to
ensure the best light. If you are shooting indoors ... make sure you are
looking to the lights!
Reduce the Shake // It's easy to make people seasick with a shaky
image ... try to stabilize the shot as much as possible. You can do this
by setting it on a table across the room or even holding your arm out
straight will help reduce the shake.
Clear Sound Trumps // People need to be able to hear you ... speak up
and speak clearly. You'll need to speak louder than you would normally
feel comfortable doing in a conversation. If you want to take it up a
level a simple mic to clip onto your shirt can make a huge difference.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer is
the second most common kind of cancer in women. About 1 in 8 women born today in the United
States will get breast cancer at some point. The
good news is that many women can survive breast
cancer if it’s found and treated early. If you are a
woman age 40 to 49, talk with your doctor about
when to start getting mammograms and how often
to get them. If you are a woman age 50 to 74, be
sure to get a mammogram every 2 years. You may
also choose to get them more often. Talk to a doctor about your risk for breast cancer, especially if a
close family member of yours had breast or ovarian cancer. Your doctor can help you decide when
and how often to get mammograms.

Noah’s Landing
Psalm 100 reads “Make a joyful noise unto the Lord.” We encourage (and welcome) ALL children in worship
(even if they are a bit noisy)!! However if a parent feels the need to take their child to a quiet place, Noah’s
Landing is available in the Chapel/Library during all worship services. The Worship & Music and Christian
Education Committees have partnered to provide a designated space with rocking chair, soft toys and more!!!
Library
Bethel has a Library full of resources from Bibles, hymnals, devotional books, and more! Our Library has been
reorganized to make it more accessible to you. Please enjoy!! Seating areas are available if you wish!! If you do
borrow something, please return it so that others may also have a chance to use it. Thank You!
Sunday Adult Forum
We will consider delving into "CONNECTIONS: FAITH AND LIFE" program from the Wart- burg Theological Seminary. The program is free and may be duplicated/downloaded with the permission of the ELCA. Also
we will host some speakers from various social action/faith in action programs. The Interfaith Hospitality Network speaker is scheduled for Sept. 28th. We are waiting to hear from Mission Liberia and an Iraqi Christian
Family to help educate us on the situation for Christians in the Middle East at this time.
