Landing of Cabrillo Tapestry
New Percent for Art Installation
to hang in Public Defender Lobby
T
HE ICONIC PAINTING OF THE LANDING OF
CABRILLO HAS BEEN TRANSLATED INTO
A TAPESTRY that will hang in the Public
Defender Lobby at the Santa Barbara
County Courthouse. An open house to
celebrate the permanent installation will
take place on Wednesday, October 29th
from 12 to 2pm at the Public Defender
Building, located at 1100 Anacapa Street.
“What better way to honor the legacy
of the Courthouse building and it’s most
featured artist, Daniel Sayre Groesbeck,
than to recreate one of the Courthouse’s
most iconic artworks?” shared Rita
Ferri, Visual Arts Coordinator and
Curator of Collections from the Arts
Commission. “The large-scale graphic
quality of the Groesbeck painting lent
itself beautifully to a modern translation
of the painting into a tapestry and the
eye-level installation of the tapestry will
allow people to investigate the image as
never done before. We are fortunate to
have artist John Nava, as a consultant, who
has pioneered the digital translations of
paintings into tapestries.”
The odyssey of creating the tapestry
began with a request from the Public
Defender’s office for artwork for their
public lobby. It was suggested that the Arts
Commission find a tapestry that would
help mitigate sound in their lobby. That
request led to a creative solution.
Ferri contacted John Nava, who is
skilled at transforming paintings into
tapestries. For this project he created a
digital “palette.” Then, a digital photo scan
of the Landing of Cabrillo with 16 million
colors was translated into about 160 colors
in fiber. Nava sent that to Belgium where
it was woven, using cotton, silk, wool, and
trevira.
The painting of the Landing of Cabrillo,
now on the 2nd floor of the Courthouse
outside the Mural Room, was originally
painted in 1924 by Daniel Sayre Groesbeck
(1879-1950). It brought Groesbeck
national recognition as a muralist and
helped him secure the Courthouse
commission for the Mural Room. In
September 2014, the County officially
accepted the gift of the Landing of Cabrillo
painting from the Courthouse Docent
Council, as donated to them by Michael
Towbes and Montecito Bank and Trust.
This Percent for Art Project was organized by
Ferri with cooperation of the County Art in Public
Places (CAPP) and Arts Commission committees.
This project is a County Percent for Art project,
which allows one percent of construction costs
from General Fund monies to be utilized for art
in a County Building. Percent for the Arts is a
board ordinance adopted in 1978, whose intent
was to improve access to the arts and reflect
a supportive County legacy for the arts in the
community.
