Corey is pastor of Crossroads Tabernacle and the forerunner in the prayer movement within the Church of the Nazarene. Please read his devotional thought written this past week: Shade in a cave: "Have mercy on me, my God, have mercy on me, for in you I take refuge. I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings until the disaster has passed." (Psalm 57:1) It makes perfect sense why David would by crying out to God for mercy in Psalm 57. David's life is being threatened and so alone on the run David's only refuge becomes a dark cave. I would be freakin out in a cave since I'm claustrophobic! I'm still traumatized by my Mammoth Cave experience as a child. I would definitely be praying for mercy. But do we really grasp what God's mercy really is or what God's mercy does? Blind Bartimaeus realized the power of God's mercy after crying out "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!" (Mark 10:46). This cry for mercy stopped Jesus in his tracks and moved Jesus to approach Bartimaeus and completely restore his vision! God's mercy is really the tangible intervention of God's presence and power in our everyday impossibilities. I've witnessed people come to church here at Crossroads completely bound with addictions and leave totally free. What is that? It's God's mercy! David's circumstances were disastrous but his cry for mercy LITERALLY changed the ATMOSPHERE in that confining cave. Notice that after praying for mercy David's refuge was no longer the cave but rather God's presence. Though David was physically in a cave, spiritually David felt the feathers and the shade of God's wings covering and protecting him. David was no longer alone in there, God's presence had intervened when David cried for mercy. Think about it, the dark cave was no longer covering David or confining him, the shade of God's presence was shielding him. That's right, God's presence provides a protective, peace producing shade in our dark depressing caves. In fact, if David had reached out and tried to feel for the rocky walls of the cave, the walls would have probably felt like soft, comforting feathers! Makes sense why David began singing and praising God in that cave (see verses 7-9). David was resting in the shade in the cave and so singing became possible: "Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings"-Ps 63:7 Pastor Jon Kroeze Page 2 Youth fundraiser Color Drive weekend, Oct. 17-18—a “yard” sale (early preview on Friday in the Family Center for the Church family) Saturday’s sale on Northwestern Mutual parking lot & a food stand @ Country Fixin’s.
