The 30th Sunday of Ordinary Time this week we reflect on the message:
Exodus 22: 20-26
1Thessalonians 1: 5c-10
Matthew 22: 34-40
St. Jude, known as Thaddaeus, was a brother of St. James the Less, and a relative of
Our Saviour. St. Jude was one of the 12 Apostles of Jesus.
Feast Day October 28
Patron Of Desperate Cases
Ancient writers tell us that he preached the Gospel in Judea, Samaria, Idumaea, Syria,
Mesopotamia, and Lybia. According to Eusebius, he returned to Jerusalem in the year
62, and assisted at the election of his brother, St. Simeon, as Bishop of Jerusalem.
He is an author of an epistle (letter) to the Churches of the East, particularly the Jewish
converts, directed against the heresies of the Simonians, Nicolaites, and Gnostics. This
Apostles is said to have suffered martyrdom in Armenia, which was then subject to Persia. The final conversion of the Armenian nation to Christianity did not take place until
the third century of our era.
Jude was the one who asked Jesus at the Last Supper why He would not manifest Himself to the whole world
after His resurrection. Little else is known of his life. Legend claims that he visited Beirut and Edessa; possibly martyred with St. Simon in Persia.
Jude is invoked in desperate situations because his New Testament letter stresses that the faithful should persevere in the environment of harsh, difficult circumstances, just as their forefathers had done before them.
Therefore, he is the patron saint of desperate cases and his feast day is October 28. Saint Jude is not the same
person as Judas Iscariot who betrayed Our Lord and despaired because of his great sin and lack of trust in
God's mercy.

A La Salette Reflection on the Sunday Readings
Great Commandments
(Exodus 22:20-26; 1 Thessalonians
1:5-10; Matthew 22:34-40)
“The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments,”
says Jesus. Love of God and of
neighbor are truly the foundation of
all Christian life. If they can be taken
for granted, the rest will follow.
But the rest does not always follow. This is why
there are so many other commandments to help
us apply the two greatest commandments to our
everyday life.
At La Salette Mary alludes specifically to two of
the Ten Commandments: “You shall not take the
name of the Lord your God in vain,” and
“Remember to keep holy the Sabbath day.” The
violation of these demonstrated that the Greatest
Commandment was not in fact being observed.
She does not speak explicitly of love of neighbor.
Rather, she demonstrates it, by reaching out to
her people in their need. She knows their sin and
their suffering, and weeps over both.
So she offers a solution to both. The word
“submit” that she uses corresponds to the biblical
notion of “fear of the Lord,” which in turn means a
sense of intense awe and reverence. This leads
to obedience but also, at a deeper level, to a real
desire to obey, a desire to know God’s will.
Remember this passage in the Gospel? “While
he was speaking, a woman from the crowd called
out and said to him, ‘Blessed is the womb that
carried you and the breasts at which you nursed.’
He replied, ‘Rather, blessed are those who hear
the word of God and observe it.’" (Luke 11:27-28)
Far from denying his mother’s dignity, he drew
attention to the source of her blessedness.
The commandments are one of the ways in which
God lets us know what he wants of us, of all his
people. With individuals, however, sometimes he
just invites. The angel Gabriel did not bring a
command to Mary, and yet she submitted to
God’s will: “Let it be done to me according to your
word.” That’s how it is with those who love God
with all their being. Once they have discerned
God’s will, they rejoice (think of Mary’s rapturous
Magnificat), and are delighted to carry it out.
And, like Mary at La Salette, they want to help
others do the same.

30th WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME
Tuesday is the Feast of Saints Simon and Jude,
Apostles, with its own special readings. Saturday is
the Solemnity of All Saints, a joyful day to remember
all of the men and women who have gone before us in
life and are now in heaven.
The Gospel of Luke offers a glimpse of Jesus healing
and teaching the people, even as he continues to clash
with religious leaders. He cures the “bent woman” on
a Sabbath and tells of the tiny mustard seed which develops to become a full grown bush. He repeats that it
will not be easy to enter the Kingdom: “For behold,
some are last who will be first, and some are first who
will be last.” He defies those who bring word of
threats on his life and defies the silent Pharisees who
watch as he cures a man on the Sabbath. Jesus encourages us to be humble: “For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself
will be exalted.”
The Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time is replaced
this year by the Commemoration of All the Faithful
Departed, also known as All Souls. The first reading
from the Book of Wisdom tells us, “The souls of the
just are in the hand of God.” Psalm 23 offers us this
response: “The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I
shall want.” From the Letter to the Romans, “Hope
does not disappoint, because the love of God has been
poured out into our hearts.” John's Gospel offers us
more hope: “For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have
eternal life, and I shall raise him on the last day.”
DAILY PRAYER THIS WEEK
Please, Lord, anything but humility! Our instinctive
reaction to humility might be the result of a culture
that exalts riches, honors and pride. Yet this week Jesus teaches the way to salvation through humility.
The first step might be simply asking for the desire to
be humble. As we move through the simplest of moments in our everyday lives, we can stop and ask God
to help us want to be humble. As we sit on the edge of
the bed in the morning, as we head to work, sort laundry or do our errands, we can keep a running prayer in
the background of our consciousness: “Lord, help me
to desire the humility that will make me more aware of
your saving grace.”
These same background moments offer ways for us to
recognize opportunities to practice humility as we go
through our days. Perhaps I can stop myself from correcting my spouse. In a disagreement, I might make an
extra effort to listen to the other person's side rather
than planning my rebuttal as they speak. I can let a
person in line in front of me, hold the door for someone or make an extra effort to recognize and thank
those who serve me. Here in the US, it is the season of
politics and elections. Maybe I can even admit that I
may not fully understand the opinions of others and
that there may be some legitimate points to them.
Even these tiny gestures, when done in the spirit of
Jesus' teachings this week, offer us a special grace.
All week we can speak to the Lord as we would to a
loving friend who listens to us. And we can end our
day in gratitude, for the merciful God who loves us so
compassionately and longs to be in our hearts.
