Sessions for Grades 5-6
16. 3D Printer Pens in Action
Design and create unique 3D models using 3Doodler pens
that “write” with plastic! In addition, a 3D printer will be
demonstrating its capabilities by printing models for some
lucky students to take home. This class is a bit science, a bit
technology and a bit art all wrapped into one!
Deb Johnson: Children’s Museum of Southern Minnesota
17. Air Dancers
Think like amusement park engineers and design a device
that floats, twirls and dances in a column of air. Engage in
the engineering design process by developing and testing
your prototypes. See how small changes in design can
drastically alter the aerodynamics of a ride.
School Outreach Team: Science Museum of Minnesota
18. Beginner GPS
Technology can help us do so many things – including
finding our way home, locating treasures, creating maps
and much more. Discover how early explorers traveled
without getting lost, learn how to use both a compass and
GPS unit, and go on a mini-geocache to try your new skills!
Alisha Flemming: Prairie Ecology Bus Center
19. Build a Wooden Rubber Band Flipping
Man!
Assemble a wooden skier that is hinged at the hip and has
rubber bands from its hands to its legs. Then pull back and
watch it flip! Learn the dynamics behind how a rubber band
can store energy and the excitement of when it’s released!
Bring home your project after you’re done to show your
friends.
American Workshop Educators
20. Fantastic Flyers
Follow in the footsteps of the Wright Brothers and learn
about aircraft and the four forces that affect flight. Learn
how to make your paper airplanes do amazing loops and
rolls. Build a Skyhawk Glider with a rubber band powered
launcher to take home.
Scott Clark (Mr. Dude): Mad Science of Minnesota
21. Fun With Frogs
Learn about most of the frog and salamander species that
live in south central Minnesota by holding, feeding and
listening to them!
Randy Korb: The Frog Guy
22. The Icky, the Yuck and the Gross: It’s
Grossology!
Yuck! It’s blood, scat, worms, slime and more! Sometimes
the coolest things in nature are disgusting. You’ll get the
scoop on poop and might just decide that maggots are
magnificent! Don’t miss this chance to learn about how
those nasty things in nature like slug slime, skunk smell and
blue blood actually help animals to survive. Now that’s cool!
Andrea Porter: Prairie Ecology Bus Center
23. Interstellar Water Quest
Your spaceship has landed on an unknown planet and its
up to you to identify water for survival! Use your creative
thinking, observation skills, some new chemistry tricks and
fun science tools to figure out which clear liquid is actually
water. Will you survive on the crazy new planet?
Heidi Smith Ferris: Growing Green Hearts
24. Skulls
Herbivore, omnivore or carnivore? You can learn a lot by
looking at an animal’s skull, teeth, eye placement and skull
structure, even if you don’t know what animal it is. Learn
about animals from the inside out, then meet real LIVE
animals up close.
Outreach Educators: Minnesota Zoomobile
25. It’s Not Magic, It’s Science!
Join wacky professor Jerry Wenzel as he demonstrates
science concepts in a fun and easy to understand way.
You will be amazed at what appears to be magic, but is
really science. This unforgettable learning experience is
guaranteed to have you asking for more. Who knows, you
may even get shrink wrapped!
Jerry Wenzel: Retired Teacher and Science Magic Programs Presenter
26. Sssssensational Snake Art
Snakes and reptiles intrigue us with their colorful patterns
and the unique role they play in our environment. Roll up
your sleeves and prepare for an experience in learning
through art! We will paint patterns on twigs that match
what we see in many varieties of snakes and reptiles. Once
our nature art is complete, we will explore several species of
snakes and reptiles and learn where they live, what they eat
and if they present a threat to humans. Take your snake art
home to share what you’ve learned with others.
Melanie Schmidt: Mankato Community Education and Recreation
27. You Can’t Call my Bird That!
Use your incredible intelligence and imagination to design,
equip and name a bird. Learn about birds as you create one.
Al Batt: Writer, Speaker, Storyteller and Humorist
28. Robotics Programming Crash Course
Brickmania’s expert builders will introduce students to
programming a robot built from the new LEGO Mindstorms
EV3 set. Then you will have the opportunity to program a robot
to perform a series of tasks. Use your problem-solving skills to
determine multiple methods to achieve the desired outcomes.
Daniel Siskind and Yitzy Kasowitz: Brickmania
29. Feel the Noise
Start with vibrations and the science of sound. Explore how
wind, string and percussion instruments change pitch. Play in a
boomwhacker band and construct an ear harp to take home. STEM Educators: The Works
30. Stream Flow Fun
Come see a flowing model stream and learn about stream
dynamics, stream bank erosion, the water cycle, stream
biology and more! You will have hands-on opportunities
to test the scientific principles we discuss and see what
happens to the stream under various conditions.
Joanne Boettcher: Minnesota Pollution Control Agency
About the Conference
The goal of the conference is to give students an
academic enrichment experience that allows them to
delve deeper into the science and nature topics they
love. It is designed to expose students to a vast variety
of topics and delivers highly educational hands-on
sessions. Many forms of science and nature will be
represented to give students the opportunity to learn
how science plays a part in our world, environment,
home, space, earth, life and technology. Instruction
is innovative, active and designed by grade level for
maximum student learning and participation. Students
will attend an opening/closing session and will selfselect three sessions to attend for the rest of the day.
Local collaborative efforts with universities,
community experts, area businesses and volunteers
make this conference possible. Our goal is to inspire
students to pursue high-demand jobs and careers in
science, technology, engineering, mathematics and
environmental fields.
