OCTOBER 26,2014
Perspectives From Fr. Kurt: Our Parish Family
The Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Patrick:
Once again, in my own name and in yours, the
faithful parish family of St. Patrick’s, I would like to say
“KUDOS and thank you” to all who worked so hard
to make the 175th Anniversary Celebration such a
memorable occasion in our history together. In
particular, I am deeply grateful to:
The 175th Anniversary Committee members, under
the leadership of Ms. Betty Slad; All Parish
professional staff for their patience, hard work, and
commitment; Mr. Neil Windt, for the gift of his original
musical composition entitled “Psalmic Fanfare and
Benediction”; our visiting musicians; Ms. Christina
Grinius, our Parish Music Director; the Children’s Choir
and A Cappella Choir; all of our liturgical ministers; Mr.
Dale Hennebry, Mr. Walt McCarthy, Mr. Mel Zagorski
and our Garden Club for beautifying our grounds; my
brother priests; Bishop Jack Gorman and our Presider and
Preacher Bishop Alberto Rojas; and all the staff at the
Cog Hill Country Club for the beautiful banquet and
delicious food at our reception luncheon. I do hope a
good time was had by all!
With such a massive undertaking, I am sure you can
understand if some details or even someone who has been
an integral part of our parish life was missed. As Pastor
and leader of our faith family, I take full
responsibility for any oversight. I deeply regret if
anyone felt slighted or if anyone was distracted from
joining more fully in the spirit of the celebration. Where
possible, I assure you I have already made amends for
those instances that came to my attention. The staff
and I, I hope you all know by now, work very hard each
and every day to be inclusive and welcoming to all in
the spirit of St. Patrick. Later in this bulletin, please
enjoy the short note of gratitude and congratulations from
the Dean of our area, and weekend assistant, Fr. Ed
Upton.
This weekend, as we continue to celebrate our 175 years
as a faith family together, we welcome Matt and Debbie
Bumber. They come to us via World Wide Marriage
Encounter, at the personal invitation of their friends
Tom and Diann Rinke. They will be speaking at all of
our Masses on the vocation of marriage and about how
the Marriage Encounter experience can enrich the lives of
all married couples. Matt and Debbie
will be available to chat with you after
Mass. If you wish to speak with them
privately, a quiet space has also been
arranged.
Things to look forward to during the month of November:
Saturday, November 1st, 5:00 pm Mass: We
remember the beloved souls that have gone home
to God this past year, along with their families.
Also, Ms. Barb Brown receives the Christifideles
Award from Monsignor John Canary.
Friday, November 7th-Saturday, November 8th: Fr.
Kurt directs an Ignatian-style retreat through
Mayslake Ministries in Downers Grove.
Saturday, November 8th 4:30 pm Mass at SS. Cyril
and Methodius: Our brothers and sisters at SS.
Cyril and Methodius Parish celebrate their 130th
anniversary.
Monday, November 10th, 7:00-9:00 pm at St. Pats
Church: Dr. Mary Amore offers a night of
reflection on “Building Up our Spiritual Lives in
this Anniversary Year.”
Sunday, November 23rd, Tri-Parish 5:00 pm Mass:
Fr. Ken Carlson, Presider and Preacher, shares
with us his witness as a “practicing chaplain”
during the Iraq War, and honoring all veterans.
Thursday, November 27th, 9:00 am Mass:
Thanksgiving Day celebration with the Adult
Choir.
Finally, I will be away from our parish next week,
October 27th-31st. I will be celebrating, with God’s help,
my first year anniversary of recovery, by helping to open
a new Guest House facility in Lake Orion, Michigan. Fr.
Ed Upton will be celebrating morning masses with you
and covering other pastoral needs, such as funerals, in my
absence. The parish staff will take care of the everyday
operations as usual while I am away. Please be assured
of my prayers for you every day in Michigan, as I hope
you will remember me in yours. I intend to share with
others who are hurting with addictions how a parish
family like St. Patrick’s can bring hope and healing to
an ailing Pastor. Thank you again for your goodness and
many kindnesses shown to me in this past year.
With God’s blessings of serenity this week,
Daylight Savings Time ENDS next
Sunday at 2am. Don’t forget to set
your clocks back to gain an hour.
Of course you could come and
pray for an extra hour... if you can
get into the parking lot.
THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Help us to support the
Church’s Initiative on
marriage!
Couples who make Worldwide
Marriage Encounter weekends
not only rediscover the joy,
intimacy & romance in their
relationships, but also become
more active in their parish.
Together, we are making
marriages, families and our
Church stronger & healthier. Matt and Debbie Bumber,
parishioners of St. Bernard’s Church in Homer
Glen, were married in the Catholic Church in June, 1998.
They have two grown children and two beautiful grand
children. They will be at all St. Patrick Church Masses
October 25 and 26 to tell you about
how their Worldwide Marriage
Encounter Weekend has helped to
make their marriage, family and
Church stronger.
Dear Kurt, Staff, Anniversary Committee and People of St.
Patrick,
My thanks for your invitation to join with you as you
celebrated your 175th Anniversary! It was obvious a great deal
of work was put into the planning and execution of the
Liturgy, luncheon and surrounding anniversary activities. My
congratulations to all who did so much.
But what was even more terrific was the spirit and obvious
pride and love for St. Patrick’ Parish that so many have. It was a
pleasure to share with you. I only regret that I will not be able
to join in the 200th—I will be “out of town.”
Again, my thanks and best wishes. Know that I enjoy my
ministry with you.
Peace, Fr. Ed [Upton]
Fr. Ed is head of our Vicariate Deanery and a frequent assistant
priest at weekend and weekday Masses.

Welcome

6:00PM – 8:00PM
Prayer for our
Archbishop-Designate,
Most Rev. Blase J. Cupich
O God, eternal shepherd of the faithful, who tend
your Church in countless ways and rule over her
in love, look with favor on your servant,
Archbishop-designate Blase Cupich. Grant him,
we pray, a spirit of counsel and fortitude, a spirit
of knowledge and piety, so that he may build up in
the world the sacrament of the Church. By word
and example may he be of service to those over
whom he presides, so that, together with the flock
entrusted to his care, he may come to eternal life.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who
lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy
Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen

BUDDY TIME!
One of the best features of our
pre-K through grade 8 school is
the fact that our older students
buddy up with our youngest
students. The 6th graders mentor the Preschool students, 7th
graders buddy up with the 1st graders, and our 8th grade
leaders take the Kindergarten
students under their wing. The
students get together frequently during the year and especially when the younger kids
might benefit from some help
from their older buddies.
ALUMNI CORNER
Meet Kathy Balnius
Class of 2009
After graduating from St. Alphonsus/St. Patrick School, Kathy
attended Lemont High School where
she earned placement on the High
Honor Roll all semesters, was President of National English Honor Society, was a member of the National
Honor Society, was on the National
French Honor Roll, as well as playing Varsity volleyball.
Kathy is a sophomore at Loyola University Chicago
where she has accepted the Loyola Presidential Scholarship, Village of Woodridge Prologis Scholarship, Lemont
Lions Club Scholarship, and the Lemont High School National English Honor Society Scholarship.
At Loyola, Kathy is on the College of Arts and Science’s
Dean’s List. She is majoring in Biochemistry, is Pre-Med, in
the Honors Program, and minoring in French.
Kathy says: “St. Al/St. Pat’s showed me what it was like
to have a school community truly feel like a family. I feel
blessed to have graduated five years ago and still be able to
reach out to my fellow classmates and share with them my
successes and failures in life. St. Al/St. Pat’s has not only
left me with a great education, but a support group that I
can always count on. This support group does not only include students that I graduated with, but students of the
grades above and below mine, teachers, coaches, and parents. I know that no matter what path I choose in life, the
St. Al/St. Pat’s community will always support me.”

Fall Service Project
Students in the RE program who raised money for
the Women’s Center of Greater Chicagoland by
filling baby bottles, are asked to return the bottles to
their catechist. Thank you for supporting those who
cannot financially support themselves.
Prayers to be Learned by Grade
In the RE program, each grade has a prayer (or
prayers) the students are to learn. The best way for
the children to learn them is to practice at home with
their families. So that you know which prayer your
child is responsible for, here is a list of the prayer for
each grade. Prayers can be found in the textbook.
Grade 1 – Sign of the Cross, how to genuflect,
Hail Mary, Our Father
Grade 2 – Glory Be, Grace Before Meals,
Grace After Meals, Act of Contrition
Grade 3 – Ten Commandments
Grade 4 – Apostle’s Creed
Grade 5 – Hail, Holy Queen
Grade 6 – Rosary
Grade 7 – Morning Offering
Grade 8 – Memorare
Our Church is participating in the
Baby Bottle Project
which benefits the Women’s Centers of
Greater Chicagoland. Please take a baby
bottle home with you from the church
TODAY, fill it with your spare change,
and return it NEXT WEEKEND. This
non-profit organization directly assists
mothers and families experiencing crisis
pregnancies by offering emotional,
financial, material, and spiritual support
through counseling, clothing, and
monetary provisions, prayer, and other
aid. Each year the three locations together
have over 5,000 appointments with
expecting mothers. By God’s Grace, the Women’s
Centers have saved over 37,000 babies-and their mothers–
from abortion since opening in 1984.

Altar servers needed
If you are in 3rd grade or older, consider being a part of our Altar Server Ministry.
The rewards are great and can also contribute to needed service hours.
If you were once in the server ministry and left, for whatever reason (too busy, wanted
to sleep in… etc), please consider rejoining. If you would like to return for holiday
Masses or weddings, please let us know.
We are always in need of mature & experienced servers for special occasions.
Server Training...
Takes place on Thursday, October 30th in the church at 7pm.
Mass takes place each week, why not be of service (look smart, and be really awesome)
to our wonderful priests and parishioners?

WOMEN’S
CLUB NEWS
Beginning
the weekend
of November
1st and 2nd, and continuing
through the 5P.M. Mass on Sunday, November 23rd, we
once again will sponsor “Turkey Vouchers” to benefit our
friends at the Lemont Food Pantry. To participate is really
quite easy. At the west entrance to church you will see a
turkey with yellow envelopes [feathers!]. Take a “feather”
or two, put in whatever donation you wish-large or small,
we're grateful for all! Then the next week return your
“feather” to church. All monies collected will be used to
buy grocery gift cards to help make sure Thanksgiving in
Lemont is a little more delicious for all!
On November 20th, at 6:30, the rosary will be said in
church. Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend.
What a great way to start the holiday season!
Also on November 20th, after praying the rosary, members
of Women's Club will be having their monthly meeting at a
local restaurant. All women of the parish are invited to join
Women's Club and to participate in all activities.
