St. Kilian, Feast Day - July 8
It is generally recognized that
from childhood, Kilian exhibited a
great zeal to the understanding of
the Christian Faith. He was
motivated by the words of Jesus:
“If anyone wishes to come after
me, let him deny himself and take
up his cross and follow me.” Kilian
was consecrated bishop before
leaving Ireland and given the name
“Kilian” which means “hammer.”
Kilian, the hammer, was to destroy
paganism by his preaching.
At that time, missionaries were
to be commissioned by the Pope.
They received the blessing of Pope
Conan for their preaching in Germany. Kilian and
eleven companions set out and when arriving in
Franconia (today Bavaria), Kilian and two
companions, Kolonat, a priest and Totnan, a
deacon, settled in Wurzburg where they were the
first missionaries to the people of that area.
Many people were converted to the Catholic faith
in the next few years. Kilian baptized the reigning
Duke Gosbert. The duke, however, was
married to his sister-in-law that which was
forbidden by both Franconia and Church law.
Since the duke had become a strong
Christian, he was resolved to separate from
his wife, Gailana. W hen she heard of
Gosbert’s intention she was furious and
arranged for Duke Gosbert to be on a
crusade, and when he was absent arranged
for the beheading of Kilian, Kolonat and
Totnan.
W hile awaiting their execution, Kilian
heard the voice of Jesus: “Friend Kilian,
arise. I do not want you to exert yourself any
longer. Just one more battle and you will
march in as victor with me.”
During the night the murderers broke in
and Kilian encouraged his companions with
the words: “Do not be afraid of those who
kill the body but cannot kill the soul.” They
were martyred in the year 689. Kilian is
pictured with a sword, the instrument of his
martyrdom.

Sacraments
Baptism
Baptisms are celebrated on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd
Sunday of the month at 2:00 p.m. in the church.
Spanish Baptisms are celebrated on the 4th Sunday
of the month at 2 p.m. Parents are required to
participate in one Sacramental Preparation session.
These meetings are held on the first and third
Sunday of each month. After attending the
9:30am Mass, parents should proceed to the Parish
Center (below the church) for the Baptism
Preparation Class. Godparents are welcome. Please
call the rectory to arrange an interview with a deacon
or priest to register for the preparation session and
the Baptism ceremony. Additional information on

Congratulations
Fr. Bruce
On Sunday, October 19th Fr. Bruce Powers was
officially installed as the new Pastor at St. Kilian’s.
Fr. John Derasmo of St. James Parish presided over the
installation and introduced Fr. Bruce to various groups
of the parish including the Parish Trustees, Pastoral
Council and Finance Committee. The priests and
deacons were then presented to Fr. Bruce. The regular
Mass followed.
Guests at the installation Mass included Rev. Rodney
Eberhardt, pastor of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, Mother
Christine Petersen-Snyder, pastor of St. Thomas
Episcopal Church, the Honorable Mayor Ralph
Ekstrand, other local community representatives and
the Knights of Columbus.

On All Souls Day, we commemorate the
memory of all of our brothers and sisters who have completed
their life’s journey on their way home to the Lord. It is an
ancient custom that we make offerings and offer prayers for
our deceased loved ones. The custom precedes the time of
Jesus for the Old Testament book of Maccabees speaks of
taking up offerings for the deceased in battle so that sacrifices
may be made in the temple of Jerusalem for them (2 Mac.
12:43-45)
To have your deceased family and friends remembered in the
Masses on All Souls Day and throughout the month of November,
please return the All Souls Envelope in your monthly packet
of envelopes this weekend. Envelopes are also available
on the bulletin stands in the church.
Because All Souls Day falls on a Sunday this year, we will
commemorate the memory of all of our brothers and sisters
who have died this past year by reading their names at the
9 a.m. Mass on Monday, November 3, 2014.

St. Agnes Medal of
Service
This past June, Msgr. Flynn, after
consultation with our Pastoral Council,
recommended Chris McDonald for the
St. Agnes Medal of Service. Bishop
William Murphy has approved. Chris
will receive this medal this weekend at
a special ceremony at St. Agnes
Cathedral.
The St. Agnes Medal of Service was instituted 8
years ago to recognize members of the church who
contributed their time and talent to our parishes. Chris
McDonald is receiving this honor because of her consistent, generous and meaningful contributions in many ways
to the life of the parish of St. Kilian.
Chris’s faith and devotion to her religion and to
the Church are evident in all that she does. She is an asset
to the pastoral staff and her kind and generous manner is
well known and loved here at St. Kilian’s.
Congratulations Chris for a well deserved honor!
SOCIAL MINISTRY/OUTREACH
Outreach is our parish community’s response to the Gospel
call to help those in need. We serve anyone who lives within
our parish boundaries regardless of religion, race or
ethnicity. We are located at 140 Elizabeth Street but our
main entrance is in the parking lot facing Conklin Street.
OUR FOOD PANTRY AND OFFICE IS OPEN MONDAY
THROUGH FRIDAY, 10AM-2:30PM.
We are also available certain Saturdays by appointment only.

Stewardship News - Accountability Weekend
Ways to Take-A-Step
Celebrate:
“Well done, good and faithful servant...come, share your
Master’s joy.” Matthew 25:21
Accountability is not an easy topic. There exist many different
levels of accountability in our lives. For our reflection today,
we are concentrating on our own personal accountability. It is
very easy to look at another and judge, but it is much more
challenging to look at ourselves. And, to look at ourselves as
ourselves - as opposed to comparing ourselves to others or
using others’ actions as a benchmark.
For some, accountability may be viewed as negative or
something we would like to avoid. Let’s, once again, challenge
ourselves to think differently. Last week we reminded
ourselves that all that we are and all that we have has been
given to us by our generous God. That generosity compels us
to respond. Accountability prompts us to ask, “How well have
I stewarded the gifts I have received?” “Have I used and
shared those gifts in a way that builds up the Kingdom of God
rather than tears it down?”
Our examination should prove joyful! Yes, there are always
areas to improve upon and we may not always live as God
intends, but we try...and when we try, we often times succeed!
The times when we could do better - when we are off-mission we have prayer, reconciliation and a community of believers
that gathers around the Eucharist each day in order to praise,
worship and be strengthened. Our active participation in the
celebration of Mass unites us with Jesus as we renew our
commitment to Him and His mission. Look to the good that is
being done and celebrate!!
We are all stewards on a journey toward God. Instead of
looking at and magnifying our faults and shortcomings, let us
rejoice and celebrate in the good that is done in Jesus’ name.
Through our celebration and joy we belong more deeply to
Jesus and to His church!

The Annual Stewardship Report on St. Kilian Parish Life
“Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under
compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” (2 Corinthians 9.7)
Since arriving at St. Kilian on June 25th of this year, I have discovered and been delighted by a thriving
and faith filled parish. The weekend liturgies are prayerful and uplifting. The young people I have
encountered who are participating in our faith formation programs are truly interested in Catholicism, and
hungering to know more about Jesus Christ. Their catechists are eager to hand on the faith to them. I have
had open and honest meetings with the Pastoral Council, the Finance Committee and the Stewardship
Committee. I have thoroughly enjoyed the St. Kilian Players production of “The Wizard of Oz” and spoken
at the Women’s Guild meeting. I have felt the Lord comforting grieving families at the funeral masses I
have offered, and experienced joy filled weddings. It is an honor and privilege to be the pastor of such a
mature community of believers.
The Stewardship Report of St. Kilian parish life that appears in this bulletin cannot do justice to the
power and presence of the Holy Spirit during the past year. Thank you for your stewardship of the gospel!
Christ our Lord has been with us in our Parish Outreach Center as so many St. Kilian stewards of the
gospel brought dignity and spiritual and emotional support to many thousands of the needy. Hundreds of
young people received the Sacrament of Reconciliation, the Body and Blood of Christ for the first time, and
the Sacrament of Confirmation. Numerous parish ministries in liturgy, spirituality and Christian
companionship are flourishing.
Financial giving to the mission of our parish has been steady through the years. In spite of the sad
closing of our parish school a few years ago, we were slightly in the black this past year, with $103,000. We
have no parish debt due to your sacrificial giving, and about $400,000 in emergency reserves. I have been
searching for a not-for-profit organization to rent and make use of our school building during the daytime.
Due to our school closing, the diocese excused us from the normal 15% tax paid annually by all parishes.
That exemption will end in 2016. Parish overall offertory income must increase significantly to meet this
tax. I count on you, who love the Lord dearly, to meet this financial challenge.
I know that you see your use of money and possessions as part and parcel of your spiritual life. You
know that money and material possessions - and what we do with our money and possessions, have much to
do with spirituality and holiness.
Everything we have, and all that we are, is a gift of God’s graciousness toward us. We try to use the
gifts God has given us responsibly, and give them back to the Lord freely- with a return on God’s
investment in us. We want to give the Lord our best. As good stewards, we resist the temptation to put our
leftover dollars in the basket. We strive toward the biblical goal of 5% of our weekly income placed in the
offertory at mass; and 5% given to charities of our choosing as the Spirit prompts us.
Giving God the first fruits of our labors is a life- altering practice that brings peace and joy into our
hearts and benefits many others as well. Together we build heaven on earth, until the Lord calls us home to
the fullness of joy. Thank you for all you do to make the gospel come alive at St. Kilian!
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume…, But lay up for yourselves
treasures in heaven…. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” (Matthew 6. 19-21)

The Diocesan Respect Life Office has
announced its 15th Annual Respect Life Contest
for youth in grades 7-8 (Level 1) and grades 9-12
(Level 2). Generous monetary prizes are given to
first through third place winners of this contest.
This year s theme is:

All entries to the contest must be submitted by one of the
parishes in Rockville Centre. Each parish may submit only one
entry per category. In order to be considered as an entry by St.
Kilian Parish, entries must be received in the rectory office by
January 5, 2015. A Judging Committee will then select the ones to
be forwarded to the Diocese for entrance in the wider contest.
Each category has certain basic guidelines that must be followed.

that must be signed by a parent or guardian,

LA SANTA MISA:
Todos los Sábados a las 6:15PM.
Ultimos miércoles de cada mes.

BAUTISMO:
Se celebra cada cuarto domingo de
mes, a las 2:00 de la tarde. Es
requisito para los papás y padrinos, atender la clase pre-bautismal,
cada tercer miércoles de mes a las 6:30 PM, en la parte baja de la
Iglesia. Por favor llame a la rectoría para hacer su cita con el
sacerdote, para llenar el formato; usted deberá traer el certificado o
registro de nacimiento de su niño. Los niños de 6 años ó más,
deberán asistir a las clases de catequesis regular.
PADRINOS: Deben ser católicos, con los Sacramentos de
Bautismo, Comunión y Confirmación; solteros ó casados por la
Iglesia. Deben traer una notificación indicando que están
registrados o son miembros de la Parroquia, en donde viven ó
adonde asisten a misa. No pueden ser padrinos las personas que
tienen parejas sin haberse casados por la Iglesia.
QUINCEAÑERAS:
Deben haber recibido los Sacramentos de Bautismo, Comunión y
Confirmación ó estar asistiendo a las clases regulares de
Educación Religiosa ó RICA (Rito de Iniciación Cristiana para
Adultos).
RITO DE INICIACIÓN CRISTIANA PARA ADULTOS: (RICA) Les
invitamos a una preparación espiritual de conversión a la fé católica.

RECONCILIACION/ CONFESIONES:
30o Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario
El domingo pasado Jesús fue puesto a
prueba respecto al dinero de los impuestos. Hoy,
nos dice la palabra de Dios que mucha gente le
escuchaba y se asombraba de sus enseñanzas.
Sin embargo, una vez más los fariseos se
reunieron para hacerle la siguiente pregunta:
“Maestro, ¿cuál es el mandamiento más grande de
la ley?” La respuesta de Jesús no se hizo esperar:
“Amarás al señor, tu Dios, con todo tu corazón, con
toda tu alma y con toda tu mente”. Único y gran
mandamiento, pero hay otro muy parecido.
“Amarás a tu prójimo como a ti mismo”. Todos
sabemos que la ley y los profetas tienen su base
en estos dos mandamientos. Y ¿ahora cuál es la
ley, cuál el mandamiento?
El Papa Francisco, en la audiencia general
del 12 de junio de 2013, nos lo clarifica para
nuestros tiempos “la ley del amor”. “¿Cuál es la ley
del pueblo de Dios? Es la ley del amor, amor a
Dios y amor al prójimo según el mandamiento
nuevo que nos dejó el Señor (cf. Jn 13, 34). Un
amor, sin embargo, que no es estéril
sentimentalismo o algo vago, sino que es
reconocer a Dios como único Señor de la vida y, al
mismo tiempo, acoger al otro como verdadero
hermano, superando divisiones, rivalidades,
incomprensiones, egoísmos; las dos cosas van
juntas. ¡Cuánto camino debemos recorrer aún para
vivir en concreto esta nueva ley!” ¿Con que
batallamos más, amando a Dios o amando al
vecino? ¿Qué es lo que Dios nos llama a hacer?
