This method dates back to the late 1800's in California when refrigeration was a great luxury. Today’s examples are typically light amber to tawny in colour, medium bodied with a malty character. Vienna lager was developed by brewer Anton Dreher 1841. Austrian brewers who emigrated to Mexico in the late 19th century took the style with them where it remains popular today. Typically reddish-brown or copper-coloured with toasted malty sweetness. Helles: Hell is the German adjective for "light," but unlike here, this designation refers to color only, not to the beer's caloric or alcoholic strength, which is a substantial 4.7 to 5.4 percent by volume. If there is one beer style that typifies the greatness of German, and especially of Bavarian beer-making, it is this straw-blond lager Weissbier : Translated as “white beer” the name derives from the yellowish-white tinge that is imparted by the pale malted wheat from which the brew is made. In Britain and the States, the brew is also called Hefeweizen (literally "yeast wheat"), because it is unfiltered, meaning the yeast remains in suspension and causes the beer to look slightly turbid. Filtered, clear Weissbier, incidentally, is called Kristallweizen ("crystal wheat"). There are also dark wheat beers. These are called Dunkelweizen ("dark wheat"). Pilsner (Pils): First brewed in Bohemia, a German-speaking province in the old Austrian Empire, Pilsner is one of the most popular styles of lager beers in Germany.
