Italian Jazz Festival celebrates 10th edition
The Italian Embassy is presenting the 10th edition of the
Italian Jazz Festival this month. The event celebrates the
Peace Accord signed in October 1992 in Rome, the event
aims to fortify the historical ties of friendship between Italy and Mozambique. In the last 10 years it has become one
of the traditional music celebrations on Maputo’s cultural
agenda, with in an average of over 1000 spectators.
The festival will open in Hotel Cardoso on 23 October (invitation only) and will continue in the following days in Africa Bar and Gil Vicente, with the participation of different
Italian as well as Mozambican groups. The bands will finish
the concerts with a jam session.
Confirmed Italian participants are “Piero Borri & Valentina
Bartoli” and “Puglia Jazz Factory”, on the Mozambican side
“Makazani Muthimu”, “Tanselle” and “Elcides Carlos” will
light up the stage.
In the spirit of education and cultural exchange the project
will also organise two workshops with musicians and students at ECA (Communication and Art Faculty of Eduardo
Mondlane University).

MAFALALA FESTIVAL: a platform
for history and innovation
Mafalala, the historic neighbourhood right in the middle
of Maputo city, hosts annually a local festival which over
the past few editions has cemented itself in the artistic and
cultural scene of Maputo as a platform for innovation.
Mafalala Festival explores history and local culture as factors for the production of wealth and opportunities for the
local community, focussing on education and empowerment of women and young residents.
The festival promotes cultural tourism in the neighbourhood, through Mafalala Walking Tours and contributes to
Maputo being a Creative City, full of nuances and artistic
and socio-cultural dynamics that in other ways would not
be displayed.
Ivan Laranjeira, director of the Mafalala Festival and President of IVERCA, the organising entity of the event, considers that “this initiative is an alert for the valuation of Cultural Heritage of the country in general and Maputo city in
particular. In this way, this event represents a turnaround
in how festivals are perceived in Mozambique – being inspired by identity, traditions, history and important artistic, sports and historical personalities from Mafalala.”
According to Laranjeira the essence of the festival is in the
mystery of Mafalala, in its endless historic, artistic and cultural flow, in the social fabric of the community, but above
all in the people who live there and make the neighbourhood a special place.
Mafalala Festival, now in its 7th edition, wants to leave a
tangible legacy in the neighbourhood of Mafalala, while at
the same time reaching out to a greater audience in Maputo and internationally.
The festival will take place from 29 October until 30 November in different spaces in Maputo.

The Maputo Oktoberfest 2014 will this year take
place on Friday 7 and Saturday 8 November.

The venue for this yearly event will be Café Acacia,
next to hotel Cardoso. Tickets, at 1000 Mtn each,
are on sale at Café Acacia. The ticket price includes
a beer mug, a complimentary beer and a German
themed buffet.
Music will be provided by the band “Schellenberger”, a six men band straight from Bavaria, Germany
which plays traditional Bavarian music, South Bohemian music and German beat music featuring accordions, trumpets, a tuba and a guitar.
Other attractions will be a contest and a raffle, the
proceeds of which will go to Imagine, a charitable
organization that works in KaTembe (http://www.imaginemozambique.org/)
The event is sponsored and organised by Grafite
Kropfmuehl de Moçambique, Bytes & Pieces, Hotel
Cardoso, Gauff, the German Embassy, Cervejas de
Moçambique and Hollard Seguros.
Ain’t no stage wide enough for Chico Antonio, a musician
with charisma and purpose for marrabenta and Mozambique traditional music. A gifted musician who in his long
career has tirelessly continued to create and promote
Mozambique music within the country and abroad. The
show this Friday 24th, at CCFM at 20H30, will see the
launch of his first solo album entitled “Memorias”.
Chico Antonio is a mature musician who creates simple
but excellent pieces of music that talk directly to music
lovers everywhere. His accomplishments in music were
awarded the prestigious Radio France International (RFI)
prize back in 1990. The RFI prize moments were of learning and exchange that gave Chico an opportunity to interact with Africa music giant Manu Dibango among others.
The “projecto transito”, which Chico Antonio is part of,
sums up his long career of creativity, sharing and enjoyment of music. “Each one of us is going to create and
recreate works in an environment of interactivity, releasing feelings and show what one reaped and where one
climbed,” said Chico at the time of the projecto transito
launch.
In the upcoming show at CCFM, Chico Antonio chose to
go on stage with handpicked musicians Mingas and Chude
Mondlane with whom he has shared his long and eventful
career as well great expectations about Music in Mozambique. The haunting voices of Majescoral will bring to the
stage the serenity that comes with excellent choral music.
At the same time an exhibition at CCFM gallery will look
back at the long and rich musical career of Chico Antonio.
