EDITORIAL
After 7 years and 175 issues the curtain is about to drop for Living in
Maputo as a weekly newsletter.
LM was launched in October 2007 and from its beginning LM has supplied the English speaking community in Maputo with information
about lifestyle, travel, charity events, health and travel tips and art
and culture. Through several editors and an increasingly professional
lay out the aim of providing up to date information about the goings
on in our capital city and beyond has been faithfully upheld. In July
2012 it was even decided to increase the editions, and what started
as a monthly pdf became a weekly must read for a growing number
of subscribers.
At this point we would like to thank all of the editors, contributors,
clients and of course all our readers for their encouragement and support over the years. Without you Living in Maputo would not have
been possible.
Even though the newsletter will now not be reaching your inbox any
longer, Club of Mozambique, as the ‘mother organization behind LM’
will still be providing news on entertainment, culture and tourism for
the residents of Maputo as well as for the numerous visitors and increasing numbers of investors in the city. We will continue to look out
for your interest, and bring you constant event and cultural up-dates
on our website, as well as on our facebook pages.
So if you want to be up to date with what’s happening, and have even
faster access to cultural events in our lovely city: from now on just go
to www.clubofmozambique.com and continue to live life in Maputo
to the fullest!

ONE MAN’S TRASH: A photo essay looking at
life in Maputo’s biggest dump site
By Jackson Mason-Mackay
The US Cultural Centre is hosting a new photo exhibition next
month which gives an insight into everyday life at Maputo’s municipal landfill in Hulene. The 14-piece collection follows the story of
Dercio Cuna (pictured above) who supports his wife and four children by collecting scrap metals. He joins several hundred others
who also live and work at the dump site, often collecting plastics to
sell to Chinese traders. It’s not lucrative work – one kilo of plastic
bottles will fetch just five meticais.
It’s not an easy place to live either. During the rainy season flood
waters pass through the dump site and sit stagnant in the densely
populated surrounding neighbourhoods. Malaria and cholera outphotographer John Wessels has captured the essence of an environment which can be regarded for its community spirit and perseverance as much as its harsh reality. “Documentary photography is
new to me,” says Wessels, “but people fascinate me and I want to
tell their stories, especially when they relate to wider social issues.”
Check out the full photo collection at the US Cultural Centre from
11 November until 1 December.
breaks are common. And despite wet weather, the dump site is
ablaze all year round, bellowing with toxic smoke. It’s a worrying
situation for a dumping ground which receives some fairly risky
items; last year 259 rounds of live ammunition were found buried
amongst the rubble, including machine gun magazines and antiaircraft munitions.
Yet it can be a friendly place, and talented South African

New photo exhibition opening on MSF’s work
in Mozambique
By Shona Thomson
“People saw a plane, an unusually large plane, as I recall some bystanders
saying. Most people were wondering what that could be. In war zones,
anything unusual triggers all possible associations with war. But to the relief and satisfaction of everyone, the plane landed peacefully and was full
of medical supplies. And from the belly of the plane came out a vehicle,
to distribute these desperately needed supplies”.
Dr Humberto Cossa, former Director of Planning & Coordination at Provin© AACEM
cial Health Directorate in Zambezia, recalls his
relief at the arrival of MSF
(Médecins Sans Frontières/Médicos Sem Fronteiras); his staff was facing
severe shortages, and it was becoming increasingly difficult to reach remote rural areas in the province to deliver emergency medical care.
MSF arrived in war-torn Mozambique in 1984, and has been responding
to the country’s changing medical needs ever since. This year marks 30
years of operations and testimonies, 30 years of proximity with the Mozambicans, and 30 years of collaboration with the government and health
authorities - all within the backdrop of 30 years of social change in a country building its independence. To commemorate this 30th anniversary,
a photographic exhibition will be hosted in Maputo featuring 30 images.
The exhibition will reflect on the different facets of MSF’s presence in Mozambique, such as the ‘flying doctors’ programme during the Civil War, the
reconstruction of the health system in the post-war years, responses to
cholera outbreaks and the floods of 2000-2001, and the establishment of
HIV/AIDS treatment programmes. The exhibition will begin at the Faculdade de Medicina, Maputo, on November 5th-7th, and will then move to
the Fortaleza, from November 11th-20th. Both exhibitions are open to all
and free of charge. There will also be a panel discussion on the afternoon
of November 5th, at the Faculdade de Medicina, featuring health professionals and MSF staff who will share their experiences and reflect on the
future challenges for MSF and for Mozambique. For more information,
please email [email protected], or call 823576766.

FANCY A FESTIVAL: a round-up of Mozambique’s cultural extravaganzas
By Antje Brauer-Maxaeia
Cultural festivals and activities are a powerful way of getting
to know a country from the inside and a good way of meeting
likeminded people. They also make an important contribution
to growing a varied and vibrant local tourism sector that will attract culture aficionados from around the world. Following in the
footsteps of its neighbours Tanzania, Swaziland and South Africa,
Mozambique is now also developing a lively circuit of music, art
and film festivals, not only in Maputo but around the country,
with many of the events already well established.
Music festival are probably growing fastest to meet the increased
demand and sophistication of revellers. Take for example the
multi-disciplinary AZGO Festival that has been taking place in
Maputo every May since 2011. It showcases an impressive list
of well-known international and national artists, screenings of
music films and has an increasing and loyal following. Like many
others of the new generation of festivals elsewhere, it is familyfriendly and also has a community education angle.
Another well-established annual event is Mafalala Festival. It is a
breath of fresh air, a dynamic and empowering event that celebrates the glorious past of this part of Maputo while at the same
time taking to a new level how present day challenges can be
addressed. “This festivals marks a step change in the way festivals are prepared in Mozambique” says Ivan Laranjeira, Mafalala
Festival director. Mafalala Festival, now in its 5th year, will for the
first time host its events outside the neighbourhood thus extending its platform for fun, exchange and learning.
Quelimane is firmly the capital of carnival in Mozambique. Carnival, a mixture of the religious and secular, in Quelimane has
been appropriated by locals to represent the aspirations of this
increasingly confident part of Mozambique. Just like
any good carnival would do, in Quelimane
it showcases the very best of local culture and brings
the whole town to a complete stand still.
Travelling to festivals around Mozambique is in itself
full of adventures. Tour operators are not yet fully exploring festivals as part of tourism. Independent travellers can easily plan
their holiday around various festivals and are sure to be delighted by the pleasure that comes with festivals in Mozambique.
Mozambique’s year in festivals:
JANUARY/FEBRUARY Marrabenta Arts Festival & Gwaza Muthini
(Maputo/Marracuene)
March/April Carnival in Quelimane, (Zambezia)
April Maputo African Film Week (also travels to other locations
including Ilha de Mocambique)
May AZGO Arts Festival (Maputo)
June Kueto Siriwala Ibo Festival (Ibo Island) & Kugoma Short Film
Fest (Maputo)
July Tambo International Art Camp & Festival (Pemba)
August Timbila festival Quissico (Inhambane), Niassa Choir Festival (Niassa), More Jazz Series (Maputo)
November Mafalala Festival (Maputo), Ibo International Festival
