ADELAIDE LIGHTS UP AUSTRALIA
BEHOLDER SCRATCHED FROM FTKNOV
Coolmore=s globetrotting sophomore Adelaide (Ire)
(Galileo {Ire}) arrived in Australia for the G1 Cox Plate
with an aura of intrigue on the back of a victory in the
GI Secretariat S. at Arlington Park Aug. 16 and a
troubled but fast-finishing third in the G2 Prix Niel at
Longchamp Sept. 14,
but a sense of doubt
settled in after
Tuesday=s barrier draw,
when the Irish invader
landed in post 13 of 14.
Adelaide shrugged that
off as a minor
inconvenience,
however, charging from
dead last to hand jockey
Ryan Moore and trainer
Aidan O=Brien their first
Australian Group 1
wins. Off a half-step
slow from the barriers,
Adelaide was
immediately eased back
and taken over to the
Adelaide
rail by Moore on the
Racing and Sports
short run into the first
turn, settling last while the beloved Tasmanian invader
The Cleaner (Aus) (Savoire Vivre {Aus})--the lone horse
to break outside of Adelaide--rushed up to vie for the
lead while four wide around the turn. The Cleaner
established a clear lead passing the 1200-meter mark,
and shortly thereafter Adelaide and Moore began
picking off rivals. They sat about third, about five wide,
as the field swung into the straight, with favored
Fawkner (Aus) (Reset {Aus}) holding a slender
advantage. That lead would be short-lived, however, as
Adelaide and Moore, storming down the middle of the
short straight, grabbed the lead approaching the 50meter mark and won by a lengthening head from the
G1 Caulfield S. winner. The multiple Group 1-winning
mare Silent Achiever (NZ) (O=Reilly {NZ}) also closed
resolutely to be third. The final time of 2:03.76 was
just a shade off Might and Power (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ})=s
stakes record set in 1998. AHe did it the hard way, but
he=s a high-quality colt and I believed that if he brought
his best form, he was probably the best horse in the
race,@ said Moore. AHe=s had to go around the whole
field and come from last. But he still won.@ Moore, who
was fresh off another major overseas victory on Hillstar
(GB) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) in the GI Canadian
International last weekend, added, AIt=s quite an
atmosphere. We=ve got some tracks like this back
home, but not as many people. It=s a lovely race to
win.@ Cont. p3
Spendthrift Farm=s two-time champion filly Beholder
(Henny Hughes) has been scratched from the Nov. 3
Fasig-Tipton November sale as a result of the illness
that knocked her out of a defense of her GI Breeders=
Cup Distaff title. ABeholder continues to recover from
her illness, and while her fever is down and she=s acting
much better, veterinarian Jeff Blea of Von Bluecher,
Blea, and Hunkin Inc. in California has advised us not to
ship her cross country to Kentucky right now,@ said
Spendthrift Farm General Manager Ned Toffey. AWe had
radiographs taken of her lungs [Friday] and she did have
some inflammation, so we=re going to do right by
Beholder and allow her to continue to get better. She=ll
be scratched from the November sale, and Dr. Blea
believes she probably needs 30-60 days to recover.
Then Beholder should be ready to resume training,
pending a full recovery.@
TARIS TO SELL AT F-T NOVEMBER
An already strong collection of horses for the FasigTipton November Mixed Sale to be held in Lexington
Monday, Nov. 3 got a little stronger with the
announcement that Commonwealth New Era Racing=s
Taris (f, 3, Flatter--Comedy, by Theatrical {Ire}) is a late
addition to the mix. The announcement comes just one
week after the attractive bay filly took her career record
to four wins from five starts with a dominating ninelength victory in the GII Lexus Raven Run S. at
Keeneland (video), good for a 110 Beyer Speed Figure.

BC Trainer Rule Modified
The Board of Directors of the Breeders' Cup has unanimously voted to
amend its convicted trainer rule to prohibit the pre-entry or entry of any
horse which has tested for any substance listed under Class One or Class Two,
Penalty Category A, in the 12-month period preceding the championships.
The rule, which prohibits trainers with similar violations to enter horses in
the championships, has now been extended to include assistant trainers or
other employees to whom the suspended trainer's horses might be transferred.

Debuting a year ago today, Adelaide was a cozy
2 1/2-length winner at Leopardstown. His first overseas
voyage came in his second start and sophomore bow
when he was second to Free Port Lux (GB) (Oasis
Dream {GB}) in the G2 Prix Hocquart May 11, and it
was back to Ireland two weeks later, where Adelaide
scored his first black-type victory in The Curragh=s
G3 Gallinule S. Second as the favorite in Royal Ascot=s
G2 King Edward VII S. after a wide trip, Adelaide
finished a gallant second, beaten just a head, after
stalking the pace in his Stateside debut in the
GI Belmont Derby July 5. Reunited with Moore for the
Secretariat six weeks later, Adelaide would reverse his
fortunes, coming wide off the turn to win by
1 1/2 lengths. The dark bay was the victim of a horrid
trip in the Prix Niel four weeks later. Bottled up on the
rail until the very late stages of that Longchamp
feature, Adelaide and Moore came flying when at last
finding daylight to be an unlucky third.
Despite being a 3-year-old, Adelaide did not enjoy the
benefit of the weight-for-age scale yesterday; given his
Northern Hemisphere birth date he was considered a
4-year-old, and therefore shouldered 14 pounds more
than the three Australian-bred sophomores in the race,
and just seven pounds less than his elder
heavyweights. That mattered little, however, after he
handed trainer Aidan O=Brien his first win Down Under
in the conditioner=s first venture to the country since
2008. The victory was a true feat for O=Brien, who has
been pioneering Adelaide=s Australian voyage from afar.

O=Brien was not on hand to witness the victory, and
Coolmore Australia=s Tom Magnier remarked, ATo Aidan
O=Brien and all the team at Ballydoyle, I=m thrilled for
them. I=m sure Aidan would be really enjoying this one.@
Coolmore=s Australian Racing Manager James Bester
told Racing and Sports, "It has been a wonderful feat.
He has been trained from Ireland with Aidan directing
everything to the minutest detail. He had the best
trainer in the world and the best jockey in the world."
Adelaide is expected to remain in Australia and
switch to the care of Sydney=s leading trainer Chris
Waller. Bester added that Adelaide=s travels are not
finished, however.
"We have a plan in place," Bester said. "He will have
a spell and then be aimed at the [A$ 4 million]
G1 Queen Elizabeth S. at The Championships in the
Sydney autumn. Then we would like to take him to
Royal Ascot. He is a wonderful traveler. This is the fifth
country he has raced in."
It was also a monumental win for part owner John
Ingham, who bought into Adelaide=s new Australian
partnership. Ingham is the former owner of the famed
Woodlands Stud, purchased in its entirety by Darley for
a reported $415 million in 2008; and his father, Bob
Ingham, campaigned Octagonal to win the Cox Plate in
1995.
Ingham told Racing and Sports, "We won a Cox Plate
with Octagonal, but and it's been a long time for
another one.@
Adelaide becomes the fifth Australian Group 1 winner
for his unparalleled sire, Galileo. Adelaide is the first
foal out of the G2 Queen Mary S. winner Elletelle, who
died last year. Elletelle is also represented by a 2-yearold full-brother to Adelaide, Puissant (Ire), who broke
his maiden at Redcar last week for Puissant Stable and
trainer Marco Botti.
The Wait Continues...
Prominent Australian owner Lloyd Williams= quest for
the Cox Plate continues after his stable star Fawkner
could manage only second as the favorite, but Williams=
son, Nick, was not downbeat about the 7-year-old
gelding=s effort.
"As you can see by the time, they were only 2/10ths
outside the record,@ Nick Williams told Racenet.com.au.
AThe field has all finished so close together and that=s
why it=s the great race it is. [Fawkner] is a marvelous
horse and we couldn=t be happier with him. He=s run his
heart out and he=s met a better one on the day. If they
meet again I=m sure it will be close again.@
Trainer Roger James was also pleased with the thirdplace effort of his mare Silent Achiever, who won three
Group 1s last season, but has taken time to find her
best form this year.
"I'm proud of her," the New Zealand-based
conditioner told Racing and Sports. "It was a great ride
by Nash Rawiller. She was just beaten by two better
horses and barrier 11 didn't help her."
Ramsey Farm-raised
Jolly Good Kitten, prevailed in
the heavy going to remain
undefeated.

On his first three starts, Elm Park wore the black-andgold silks of the Late Paul Mellon, which were given to
the Baldings for their homebreds to sport, and he
proved more than worthy of the honor without
suggesting he could hit these heights. Third behind
Godolphin=s potentially smart Latharnach (Iffraaj {GB})
over seven furlongs on debut at Sandown July 30, he
put up the type of green, but honest first performance
typical of a hybrid middle-distance colt and built on that
to score with authority at that distance at Newbury
Aug. 15. A fortnight later, the bay--who looks to be the
pick of all those bred at Kingsclere Stud so far--showed
a professional manner that was to become a trademark
quality by making all in the Listed Stonehenge S.

In Sheikh Fahad=s Qatar silks, Elm Park managed to
subdue the listed winner Nafaqa (Ire) (Sir Percy {GB}) in

the first time since his Newbury maiden score as he
brought up the distinguished Royal Lodge-Racing Post

he was able to

AHe is very straightforward and traveled beautifully, so I

explained. AHe has a great attitude and will get better
with age.@ Sheikh Fahad added, AWe just needed time
as an operation, but we have plenty of nice 2-year-olds
this year and the emphasis is on quality rather than
quantity. We have a great team and this is a great day.@

Introduced in the Listed Flame of Tara S. over a mile
at The Curragh at the end of August, Steip Amach was
not disgraced when fourth behind Jack Naylor (GB)

filling the same spot behind the latter and Cocoon in
the Listed Staffordstown Stud S. back over that track

three-day turnaround to overhaul Ballydoyle=s red-hot
market-leader Royal Navy Ship in this weak renewal and
provide her Redmonstown Stud-based freshman sire

given a rest. Returning to annex the Listed Doonside
Cup on good-to-firm back at 10 furlongs at Ayr last
time Sept. 20, he took advantage of some below-par
rivals and favored soft conditions to turn this into a
procession. Held up in fourth early by James Doyle, the
homebred was set alight up the center of the track in
pursuit of the long-time leader Battalion and after rolling
by that rival with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining galloped
strongly to the line. ASky Hunter won very comfortably

commented Bruce Raymond, representing the

BREEDERS= CUP MODIFIES TRAINER RULE
The Board of Directors of the Breeders= Cup has
unanimously voted to amend its convicted trainer rule
to prohibit the pre-entry or entry of any horse which
has tested for any substance listed under Class One or
Class Two, Penalty Category A, in the 12-month period
preceding the championships. The rule, which prohibits
trainers with similar violations to enter horses in the
championships, has now been extended to include
assistant trainers or other employees to whom the
suspended trainer=s horses might be transferred.
The changes will go into effect beginning with the
2015 Breeders= Cup.
AOur board is strongly committed to the principle that
the most important asset of the Breeders= Cup is
integrity, and there is no place in the championships for
those who are unable to comport with the rules
prohibiting the administration of prohibited substances,@
Breeders= Cup Chairman William S. Farish, Jr. said in a
statement announcing the rule change.
Craig Fravel, Breeders= Cup President and CEO,
added, AWe are hopeful that in selecting a trainer,
owners will exercise the utmost care to assure
themselves that a horse in that trainer=s care will not be
treated improperly. A commitment to playing by the
rules is vital to the future of the sport.@

Just Wait Til Next Year: Shoes Off, On, and Off Again as Shoeless
Senior Racehorse Tahoe Warrior is Claimed and Re-Claimed Once

Once upon a time there was an 11-year-old racehorse who started 11

Michael Ritvo is off to a quick start. The 19-year-old won on the second

didn’t even consider becoming a rider until two years ago. Doug

BLACK-TYPE PREVIEWS
BACK ON THE RIGHT TAC
Breaking through into the big time when successful in
Longchamp=s G1 Prix Royal-Oak twelve months ago,
Tac de Boistron (Fr) (Take Risks {Fr}) returns to the
Bois de Boulogne today to relaunch his truncated
season. Despite having won the 2012 G2 Prix Maurice
de Nieuil here, it was not until he beat the dual
subsequent G3 St Simon S. and G3 John Porter S.
scorer Cubanita (GB) (Selkirk) by eight lengths in
Chester=s Listed Stand Cup over an extended 12-furlong
trip in September that the grey was taken seriously.
Second in the G1 Prix du Cadran over 2 1/2 miles on
Arc day here, he was imperious when annexing this
prize by five lengths later in October and looked a
potential star stayer when returning to defy a sevenpound penalty in the two-mile G3 Sagaro S. at Ascot
Apr. 30. Not seen since finishing runner-up in the G2
Yorkshire Cup at York May 16, trainer Marco Botti is
hoping he has him back at a peak. AHe had a fall earlier
in the year and bruised his ribs, which can be very
painful. We had to stop with him and give him plenty of
time to recover,@ he told PA Sport. AWe had to push
him a little bit harder than normal to get him ready for
this weekend, but he=s an older horse, he has taken his
work well and I=m very pleased with him. As it worked
out, we would not have run him much this summer
anyway because the ground would have been against
him. He seems happy and in good form, his fitness is
nearly 100% and the ground should suit him on
Sunday, so we are looking forward to the race.@
Tac de Boistron=s compatriot High Jinx (Ire) (High
Chaparral {Ire}) returns to the scene of his career-best
win in the Oct. 5 G1 Prix du Cadran and trainer James
Fanshawe is hoping that performance has not taken its
toll. AHe seems in good form at home. He=s been well
and bright since the Cadran,@ he told PA Sport. AYou
never know with horses at this time of year quite how
they are, but he seems well and we=re looking forward
to running him. The ground will be softer than it was at
Longchamp, but he has good form in softer ground.
That said, it=s a tough race and I think there is probably
more strength in depth than there was in the Cadran.@
His Highness The Aga Khan enjoyed success with the
3-year-old filly Ebadiyla (Ire) (Sadler=s Wells) in 1997
and looks to Zarkava=s half-sister Zarshana (Ire) (Sea the
Stars {Ire}) to emulate that achievement. After a brace
of wins in the Listed Prix de Thiberville here July 13
and G3 Prix Minerve at Deauville Aug. 17, she looked in
need of this kind of trip when third in the G2 Prix de
Royallieu over 12 1/2 furlongs on Arc Saturday Oct. 4.
On that occasion, she was a short neck and a head
behind the Duke of Alburquerque=s Frine (Ire) (High
Chaparral {Ire}) and that rival is on six-pounds better
terms here. Another with major claims is Dr Ronan
Lambe=s Aug. 22 G2 Lonsdale Cup heroine Pale Mimosa
(Ire) (Singspiel {Ire}), who did not stay the 2 1/2 miles
of the Cadran when third behind High Jinx last time and
finally gets the testing ground she relishes here.

CAUSING MAYHEM
Today=s G1 Premio Lydia Tesio provides the
sophomore fillies an opportunity to prove themselves
against elders, and one who could certainly live up to
expectations is the lightly raced French filly Mayhem
(Ire) (Whipper). The Philip Sogorb charge didn=t see a
racetrack until July 23, when she was second in a 12
furlong Vichy conditions
race, and she got off the
mark a month later over
the same track and trip.
Following up in the Listed
Prix Joubert over the
same distance at SaintCloud Sept. 15, Mayhem
was beaten just a short
Mayhem
neck when second in the
Scoop Dyga
G2 Prix Royallieu at
Longchamp Oct. 4, and
could be the class of this bunch. The race boasts a few
handy German invaders, one of those being Calyxa (GB)
(Pivotal {GB}). The 4-year-old opened her 2014 account
with a listed win at Cologne going a mile, and two
starts later stepped up to add the G3 Franz-Gunther
von Gedachtnisrennen over the same trip. Third when
stretched out to 10 furlongs for the G1 Grosser
Dallmayr Preis July 27 and seventh at that distance in
Deauville=s G1 Prix Jean Romanet Aug. 24, she enters
this off a third the mile G1 Premio Vittorio di Capua,
and has distance queries to answer. The shippers will
have to see off a strong team of locals that is headed
by G2 Oaks d=Italia winner Final Score (Ire) (Dylan
Thomas {Ire}), who is unbeaten in Italy and prepped for
this with a San Siro allowance victory Sept. 24. The
Stefano Botti-trained So Many Shots (Ire) (Duke of
Marmalade {Ire}) has yet to finish off the board in five
outings. She was third in the Oaks d=Italia prior to
taking the G3 Premio Mario Incisa Della Rochetta by
four lengths, and was a last-out second in the G3
Premio Verziere off the layoff Oct. 12.
Look for the K throughout the TDN graded stakes
entries, denoting Keeneland sales graduates.

TOP TRAINERS HOLD STRONG HANDS AT BEL
Trainers Chad Brown and Todd Pletcher who,
unsurprisingly rank among the top conditioners in wins
at Belmont=s closing fall meet, will look to end things on
a high in today=s GIII Turnback the Alarm H. Brown will
saddle Alpha Delta Stables=s Endless Chatter (First
Samurai) and Hidden Brook Farm=s Catch My Drift
(Pioneerof the Nile); while Pletcher sends out two J
“TDN Rising Stars” J in
Stonestreet Stables=s Teen
Pauline (Tapit) and Bobby
Flay=s Dame Dorothy
(Bernardini). Endless Chatter
capped a three-race win
streak in Saratoga=s restricted
Summer Colony S. Aug. 18
before finishing a distant third
behind GI Breeders= Cup
Distaff contender Belle
Catch My Drift
Gallantey (After Market) in the
NYRA/Coglianese
local GI Beldame Invitational
S. "This is a filly that really
came around this summer, particularly at Saratoga,"
said Brown, who has the training title locked up going
into today=s closing card. "I'm real proud of her. She's a
horse who stayed here all winter and kind of went
around in circles for a while. When she finally hit a bit
of a growth spurt, she really came on this summer. Her
last race was a third in the Beldame behind a horse
who's going to the Breeders' Cup and that was a really
good showing. This is more of her class level. Two
turns is more her preference, but it looks like a good fit,
class-wise, for her." Catch My Drift kicked off her
career with victories at Parx and Monmouth, but was
seventh when trying 10 furlongs and significantly
tougher competition in the GI Alabama S. Aug. 16. The
sophomore returned to winning ways while overcoming
a rough start and her own greenness in a Bensalem
optional claimer Sept. 20. AWe backed up and
regrouped with her and she won a nice allowance race
at Parx Racing,@ Brown said of the morning line 6-1
shot. AShe really did well. She's run well there; she
needs to translate that form to here.@ Teen Pauline is
undefeated in three efforts this season at four, but
hasn=t been seen since annexing the GII Top Flight H.
on the Big A inner track Mar. 1.
"She got a bit of a freshening after her winter
campaign, and this is sort of where she landed," said
Pletcher. "I'm not sure that she is at her best around
one turn, but we are looking forward to getting her
back underway." Dame Dorothy was a debut winner
going seven panels in Ozone Park Nov. 30 before airing
by 12 lengths in a sloppy route allowance at Gulfstream
Jan. 21. She was last seen taking Presque Isle=s
Malvern Rose S. for Pennsylvania-breds Aug. 10 ahead
of a next-out stakes winner. AShe's a filly we've always
thought a lot of," said Pletcher of the $390,000
KEESEP yearling. "She's had some spacing between her
starts and we're hoping to get a little more consistent
schedule with her. There are limited options, and this is
a bit of an ambitious placing for her. But we think
highly of her and this should set her up for the [GIII]
Comely [S. at Aqueduct Nov. 29], which would be back
against straight 3-year-old fillies."

CLASH OF TITANS IN SHA TIN TROPHY
With the Hong Kong International Races about six
weeks down the road, the region=s heavyweights are
slowly emerging from their off-season slumbers, three
Horses of the Year collide in a stunning renewal of the
Sha Tin Trophy H. this afternoon. Designs on Rome
(Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) is the most recent to
be recognized as the local king of the hill and makes his
second start of the
campaign, again at a
distance well short of
his best. The Irish-bred
won the Hong Kong
Derby and G1 Queen
Elizabeth II S. hero,
both over 2000
meters, but the 4-yearold returned from a
disappointing fifth to

in the Champions and
Chater Cup going 12
furlongs with a fast-closing third to Gold-Fun (Ire) (Le
Vie dei Colori {GB}) when spotting the reigning
champion miler three pounds in the Celebration Cup H.
Oct. 5. Top jockey Joao Moreira, who was suspended
and could not ride Designs on Rome in his seasonal
debut, gets in the saddle for the first time this
afternoon. AI hope he can bring his >A= game to the race-even if the distance of this race is not the right
distance for him yet, I still believe he can perform very
well over the mile,@ the Brazilian commented. AHe will
run home very strongly and he will be pretty close.@
Gold-Fun, runner-up in last year=s Hong Kong Mile,
overcame a ton of adversity to win the Celebration Cup
first-up, lunging home late after being in jail at the
furlong marker. Jockey Douglas Whyte sees further
improvement in the 4-year-old. AHe was pretty
well-tuned for his first effort the other day, so there
were no cobwebs to be blown out and how much he=s
improved from that run, we=ll find out at the weekend,@
the South African explained. AHe wasn=t bottomed for
his first run, but he certainly was well prepared.@
Military Attack (Ire) (Oratorio {Ire}) took down Horse of
the Year honors in 2012-2013, winning the QE II and
the G1 SAI Cup in Singapore, but was upstaged by
Designs on Rome in defense of his QE II title last April.
Third in Singapore to then-stablemate Dan Excel (Ire)
(Shamardal), the veteran makes his first start for the
Caspar Fownes barn this afternoon and enters off a
1200-meter barrier trial win Oct. 14. AThe mile=s not
really his distance but he felt pretty sharp in his trial the
other day,@ said leading rider Zac Purton. AHe seemed to
bounce out of the gate with a bit of purpose and if he
can do that on the weekend and get the right speed to
suit him, I think he=ll run a pretty good race.@ Ambitious
Dragon (NZ) (Pins {Aus}), victorious in the 2012 Hong
Kong Mile, makes his first appearance in 18 months,
having been nursed back to health from an off-fore
tendon injury.
He too annexed a barrier trial in the lead-up to this
return to action and expectations seem to be a bit
muted. AHis trial was OK, you just have to take into
account that he=s been out for a long time so I hope he
gives us a nice run,@ trainer Tony Millard stated. Fan
favorite California Memory (Highest Honor {Fr}), a twotime winner of the G1 Hong Kong Cup, continues
towards a possible start in that race, and he can
certainly go forward off a running-on seventh, beaten
two lengths, in the Celebration Cup last time out.

AROUND THE WORLD
FIRST KEENELAND MEET WITH NEW DIRT
SURFACE CONCLUDES Edited Press Release
Keeneland=s 2014 Fall Meet, highlighted by the debut
of a new dirt surface, the track=s first $1-million race
and world-class racing that produced a large contingent
of Breeders= Cup-bound horses, closed Saturday with
the third-highest Fall season attendance in Keeneland
history. On-track attendance for the 17-day Fall Meet,
held Oct. 3-25, totaled 251,574, third behind the fall
records of 266,466 and 259,710 recorded in 2013 and
2012, respectively. Average daily attendance was
14,798, down 5.59% from last fall=s 15,674.
Attendance was impacted by consistent rain and
cooler-than-normal temperatures on seven of the meet=s
opening 10 race days. Average daily attendance
rebounded, however, to exceed comparable 2013
figures each of the final six days of the meet, which
had sunny, dry weather.
AMother Nature challenged us during the opening
weeks of the meet, and we thank the legions of loyal
fans who came to the races on those less than ideal
weather days,@ Keeneland President and CEO Bill
Thomason said. AWe strive to offer every one of our
guests the best experience possible. Keeneland is a
very special place to go racing in both good and bad
weather.@
On-track wagering totaled $17,625,834, dipping 3%
from last Fall=s $18,173,355. Average daily on-track
wagering was $1,036,814, down 3% from $1,069,021
in 2013. All-sources wagering on Keeneland totaled
$122,844,887, down 12% from last year=s
$139,660,179.
Keeneland=s new dirt surface, which was installed
this summer on the main track, performed well despite
the trials posed by October=s inclement weather.
AThe new drainage system was tested from the
outset of the meet, but we are very pleased with its
ability to handle all the rain,@ Keeneland Vice President
of Racing Rogers Beasley said. AThe track played very
fair throughout the season, and winners were balanced
between speed-favoring and come-from-behind horses,
favorites and longshots.@
A total of 38 horses to race or train at Keeneland
have been pre-entered in next weekend=s Breeders= Cup,
including Breeders= Cup Challenge winners Work All
Week (City Zip), Carpe Diem (Giant=s Causeway), Don=t
Tell Sophia (Congaree), Lawn Ranger (U S Ranger) and
Rainha Da Bateria (Broken Vow).
AThis October gave us many memorable racing
moments,@ Beasley said. AOne of the most exciting
aspects, and another indicator of the quality of racing
here this Fall, was the strong competition among the
nation=s top trainers and jockeys for Keeneland meet
leader titles, which weren=t decided until deep into
closing day.@
Ken and Sarah Ramsey took home their 14th
Keeneland owners title with nine wins, while Graham
Motion and Todd Pletcher tied for the training title with
eight victories apiece. Rosie Napravnik was leading rider
with 16 wins.
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 26, 2014
Average daily purses of $651,558 for the Fall Meet
continued to rank among the nation=s highest. Field size
averaged 8.42 starters per race compared to 9.85 in
the 2013 Fall Meet.
TODAY’S INSIGHTS

Trainer Bill Mott will send out a pair of well-bred firsters this afternoon
in FRESH WINE (Pulpit) and HIGH MINDED (Congrats). The former,
who was purchased by Wounded Warrior Stables for $375,000 at the
Fasig-Tipton August Sale in 2013, is a 3/4-sibling to GI Coaching Club
American Oaks winner Funny Moon (Malibu Moon), as well as to MSW
Throng (Silver Deputy). Juddmonte colorbearer High Minded is out of a
half-sister to millionaire MGISW Aptitude (A.P. Indy) and GISW Sleep
Easy (Seattle Slew). The Chad Brown trained Takeover Target
(Harlan’s Holiday) also adds interest as the third foal out of Vanquished
(Empire Maker), a half-sister to MGISW Critical Eye (Dynaformer).

Kentucky Derby at this track, will have to overcome the rail draw for this
career opener. The bay is out of After Thought (Fusaichi Pegasus), a
full-sister to GSW Ravel and a 3/4-sister to Humphrey’s talented turf
runner Centre Court (Smart Strike). After Thought’s first foal, Annulment
(Broken Vow), won a division of the Hatoof S. at Arlington Aug. 16.

Lothenbach Stables’ NO FAULT OF MINE (Blame) earned a lofty 86
Beyer Speed Figure in winning her career debut over the Arlington Poly
by a widening 4 1/2 lengths, and has a license to be even better over
this surface. The homebred’s dam, Single Solution (Flatter), is a halfsister to Grade I-winning turfer Vacare (Lear Fan) and was credited with
a victory in the 2009 GIII Pin Oak Valley View S. No Fault of Mine is her
first foal. Carta de Oro (Medaglia d’Oro) was a debut fourth--placed
third--behind TDN Rising Star Tammy the Torpedo (More Than Ready)
at Saratoga Aug. 17 and graduated by 4 3/4 authoritative lengths over
this turf course when last seen Sept. 20. The homebred is a daughter of
MGSW & GISP Communique (Smart Strike). Brisnet.com PPs

as a KEESEP yearling, burned up the SafeTrack surface in :20 3/5 for a
quarter-mile ahead of this year’s OBSAPR sale and was hammered
down for $255K. The colt’s half-brother, TDN Rising Star Conveyance
(Indian Charlie), won the first four starts of his career, capped by a
victory in the GIII Southwest S. Darley Stable’s Docket (Tiznow) is out
of a Speightstown daughter of Well Dressed (Notebook), making Docket

scratched out of the GII Indiana Derby Oct. 4 and was
the second betting choice here. The bay gelding raced
four wide at the tail of a tightly bunched field. He was
in mid-pack on the turn, ranged up four wide into the

a furlong to run. Bump Start, most recently third in the

CAPTAIN DIXIE (c, 3, Henrythenavigator--Dixie Dos, by
Dixieland Band), who drew into this race off the alsoeligible list, was coming off a runner-up effort in the
Sept. 27 GIII Jefferson Cup at Churchill Downs. The
tepid 3-1 favorite, caught wide into the first turn,
settled just off the early pace. He inched closer on the
second turn, engaged pacesetting Heuston (Ire)
(Acclamation {GB}) in upper stretch and outbattled that
rival to the wire to win by a nose. Captain Dixie, who
recently RNA=d for $340,000 at the Fasig-Tipton July
Sale of Horses of Racing Age, is a half-brother to Max
Silverhammer (Wild and Wicked, SW, $178,801). Sales

+TIGER RIDE (f, 2, Candy Ride {Arg}--Royal Tigress
{SW-Ire}, by Storm Cat), dismissed at 13-1 for a barn
that strikes with longshot firsters from time to time,
settled towards the back of the field early here after a
slightly hesitant start. She inched closer along the rail
approaching the turn for home, and clearly had run as
she waited for room to stretch her legs. Tipped into the
clear at the head of the lane, the bay overtook her rivals
by midstretch before taking a green step. She quickly
righted the ship, and reported home 1 3/4 lengths to
the good of Lovely Moon (Bernstein). The winner is a
half to Ol Donyo (Curlin), SW, $192,533. Dixiana
Farms purchased her dam--a former Aidan O=Brien
trainee--for $170,000 at the 2010 Keeneland November
sale in foal to Tiznow. The resulting colt was this year=s
Easy Goer S. runner-up Legend. Royal Tigress is a half
to British Group 3 winner and French Group 1-placed
juvenile Warm Heart (Diesis {GB}). Tiger Ride=s third
dam is Canadian champion sprinter Summer Mood (Raja

MAJESTICO (c, 2, Majesticperfection--Senorita Dehere,
by Dehere), a debut third going 5 1/2 grassy panels at
the Spa after hitting the gate behind subsequent Laurel
Futurity winner Cyclogenesis (Stormy Atlantic)
Aug. 18, went one better when transferred to the
Churchill sod, only missing by a half-length over 1 1/16
miles Sept. 19. Stepped up to graded-stakes company,
the bay ran fourth to Lawn Ranger (U S Ranger) in the
GIII Dixiana Bourbon S. at Keeneland and was favored
at 8-5 to put it all together in this fourth attempt. The
juvenile hit the gate at the bell, but recovered to sit
third-last one off the rail early. Majestico angled five
wide leaving the bend after six furlongs in 1:13.73 and
rushed past most of the field before outdueling Task
Force Glory (Badge of Silver) in the final strides to win
by 3/4 of a length. The winner is a half to Bella Roja
(Hold That Tiger), SP, $162,138 and is the 15th winner
for his freshman sire (by Harlan=s Holiday). The colt is
pre-entered for the GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile Turf, but
requires four horses to scratch to make the field. This is
the extended family of GI Kentucky Derby runner-up
Invisible Ink (Thunder Gulch) and SWs Princess Arabella
(Any Given Saturday) and Dyna=s Lassie (Dynaformer).

+CLASSY CLASS (c, 2, Discreetly Mine--Collegiate
{GISP}, by Saarland), a $120,000 KEENOV yearling
from the E. Paul Robsham Stables dispersal turned
$250,000 OBS March juvenile after a :10 2/5 breeze
(making him the priciest juvenile by his sire to sell this
year), was well supported at 7-2 off a solid-looking
local worktab. The bay tracked in a distant third behind
a runaway pacesetter, and took over into the lane when
that foe threw in the towel. His only competition
appeared to be coming from paternal sibling
Performance Bonus (Discreetly Mine), and while a
stretch duel seemed imminent at the head of the lane,
Classy Class found another gear by midstretch to shut
the door on that rival and graduate by four lengths.
The well-backed Street Jersey (Street Cry {Ire}-Jersey Girl) was another six lengths back in third.
Classy Class becomes the 12th winner for his freshman
sire (by Mineshaft) following a debut score by
Discreetly Placed earlier in the day at Parx. The winner=s
dam, who finished third in the 2008 GI Spinaway S. for
Team Valor International, was purchased by E. Paul

was 3-1 to improve in this first start around two turns

+ALRIGHT ALRIGHT (c, 2, Munnings--Afare {MSW,
$162,550}, by Meadowlake) took some sneaky money
at 9-1 for a barn that has endured a cold streak this
year, and the action proved for good reason as the
handsome chestnut overcame a wide draw and trip to
score first up. Always within striking distance while
four wide through splits of :22.10 and :45.23, Alright
Alright tugged his way up to the head of affairs
entering the straight. Even-money firster Firing Line
(Line of David) did his best to overcome a very slow
start in the run to the wire, but the favorite ran out of
real estate and Alright Alright prevailed by a half length
despite covering 23 ft. (approximately 2 3/4 lengths)
more than the runner-up. The winner was a $25,000
KEESEP yearling purchase by Harry Weisleder and
Clovis Crane and blossomed into a $205,000 Barretts
March juvenile after a :10 flat breeze for the Crane
Thoroughbred Services consignment. He becomes the

An easy one-length winner in a course-and-distance
firsters= heat Oct. 13, Jolly Good Kitten took a step
forward and maintained his perfect record in this blacktype bow. Trapped wide and shuffled back to race in
rear after the initial strides, he found the rail on the
sweeping home turn and was driven out in the short
straight to claim a career high on the line.

Successful in the 2012 Listed Derby de l=Ouest over
this track and trip, Meleagros ran fifth in the June 29
G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud and was dropped in grade
coming off a fourth in the Aug. 10 G3 Prix de Reux at
Deauville, and a sixth in the Sept. 14 G2 Prix Foy at
Longchamp last time. Settled off the pace after passing
the judge first time, he made ominous headway into
contention rounding the home turn and stayed on
strongly under a final-quarter drive to double his stakes
tally in game fashion.

As is frequently the case in Hong Kong feature races,
trainer John Moore sends out multiple runners,
including the four top-weighted horses, in today=s
Premier Bowl H. at Sha Tin. Able Friend returns to
action after dancing all the dances in the 4-year-old
series last year. Winner of the Classic Mile, defeating
Designs on Rome, he had the tables turned by the
eventual Horse of the
Year in the Classic Cup
and Hong Kong Derby as
the distances increased,
while turning in
spectacular efforts in
defeat. The visiting
Variety Club (SAf) (Var)
soundly defeated 7-10
Able Friend
HKJC.com
Able Friend in the
G1 Champions Mile when
the gelding was last seen May 4 and he uses this as an
initial steppingstone to the Hong Kong Mile Dec. 14.
While Joao Moreira rode the top-weight last season,
he elects to stick with G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen hero
Sterling City for his second run this term. The gelding
was first-up in the National Day Cup up the 1000-meter
straight Oct. 1, a distance too sharp for him, and he
came home an even sixth behind Bundle of Joy. AHe=s
in good shape, he=s been working well and I think that
race over the 1000 meters was almost like a barrier trial
for him, so he=ll be going into this race still fresh,@
Moreira explained. AIt=s a very even race--those
low-weighted horses will be very competitive,@ he
added. One of those down in the weights that figures a
huge threat is Aerovelocity. The 6-year-old went on a
five-race tear last season, culminating with a narrow
victory in the Sha Tin Vase H. over today=s course and
distance May 25, but races for the first time since a
runner-up effort in the Premier Cup H. over seven
furlongs June 8. He has trialled brilliantly coming into
this event and can take advantage of a double-digit pull
in the weights.
