Wynnum Manly Yacht Club Inc. Soundings Commodore's Report By Peter Miller “Exile” Well the St. Helena Cup has been and gone and was a great success once again. Perfect sailing weather on both days with all boats finishing within the time limits. I was on the YQ RIB and photographer and we had to attend few incidents this year. The Clubhouse was also well attended by all over the weekend and I say thank you to all for that. A big thank-you to Sandy and Karin from the Manly Hotel for being our major sponsor of the Cup and to Damian from Nautilus Insurance for sponsoring the cruising part of the event. Thank-you also to the many other sponsors that support the various other prizes and divisions on the weekend including Multihull Central, Australiawide Boat Sales, Amity boats, Brisbane Solar Electrical, Hood Sails, Muir Marine, Manly Marina Cove Motel, TBQ Services and the Coast Guard. Thanks also to our members with Blair Harrison’s team doing a great job on the water and Bob White’s team doing a great job around the Clubhouse on the entertainment, drinks and food. The committee continue to work on improvements around the Clubhouse. With the CCTV and the new television / sound system in. There is still a lot happening between now and the end of the year, including the WMSC/ Combined Clubs Awards Night, SAGS and kids Xmas party with Santa. I wish to congratulate the Manly Dragon Boat Club on their success at the World Championships in Italy. We will have to work out where we store the silverware. I look to forward to seeing you all around the club and on the water. Have healthy, happy and safe Xmas. OFFICE & BAR HOURS FOR FESTIVE SEASON The last day for the club office will be Thursday 18th December 2014. We will re-open on Tuesday 20th January 2015. Soundings Groundings By Stewart Hamilton, “Jaygee” Agenda item for discussion at November General Meeting Items Requiring Attention The Club House has two retaining walls that need serious attention:1. The wall (East Wall) facing east of the Club House incorporating the access ramp next to the BBQ. 2. The North Wall in front of the Club House facing the Marina. We propose to divide the work into two sections. Stage 1 The East wall where we will need to build a retaining wall about 5-10cm from the old wall. The new retaining wall will be made out of link block on a footing of 300 x 400. We then propose to back fill the space between the old and the new wall. Hence the old wall will be retained. The access ramp next to the BBQ will have to be removed and then put back against the new wall. The wall will go from the south side of the Club House through to the North Wall. We have three quotes that I will present to the general meeting on 19/11/2014. Stage 2 The second stage will be the North Wall that faces the Marina. This will require a lot more work as plies have be put into the ground and equipment needs to be brought in under the canopy. Holes need to be drilled and a heavy hot dip galvanized post needs to be in placed between 8 sections. Because of the difficult location of the wall, the cost will be higher. We are sourcing quotes but do not expect to be in a position to make a recommendation to the committee until early 2015. HELENA CUP has been run once again and we give a Big THANK YOU to the volunteers who – arrived on the Friday & Saturday to assist all the visiting crews berth their yachts safely within our marina. Some volunteers came Friday and Saturday. As we needed to have 3 boats to a 2-berth space, a ‘helping hand’ to moor at the end of the race is a great help. The visiting crews have often been here before and know the drill so this year it went without a hitch once again. • SLIP BOOKINGS - Christmas is getting closer so please BOOK NOW for the Slipway as we are heavily booked already and we hate to disappoint anyone. • MARINA MAINTENANCE - We are doing a check on the Marina Berths and catching up on any little repairs before the holidays – if you know a spot needing attention please drop into the office and advise the Berth No. and the trouble. • CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS – for our boats – will be available as usual. Just visit the Marina office to organise. HOLIDAYS – The Marina Office will be closed for a couple of weeks BUT contact can be made with the Marina Manager Pamela regarding any problems on 0409 636 783. • REMINDER – our RECYCLING AREA - near the Slipway, covers many different items. We can now recycle and our members are only too pleased to have it available. At Christmas however this can become full so please only use for bottles etc. that come from YOUR BOAT Not from a whacko party at home – there is just not the room. • GREAT CATCH - One of our keen fishing people caught a LARGE mud crab a week ago and brought in photos to prove the event. It was caught in the local area!! Page 10 November - December I 2014 As this is our last ‘Soundings’ for the year here are our opening Hours over the Holiday period . Soundings Sailing Chairman's Report Blair Harrison, Sailing Chairman 38th Manly Hotel St. Helena Cup The 38th St. Helena Cup was a great sailing weekend with excellent weather, tough competition and a highly successful social agenda. There were 79 registered entrants, with fifty one boats in the main mono event, fifteen multihulls and thirteen boats in the cruising/classic division. Boats came from as far as Mackay and the Illawarra as well as Noosa, Scarborough and Southport. Despite the forecast for light winds we had near perfect weather with sunny skies and a northerly breeze which reached 15 knots at times in the afternoon. All competitors were able to complete the full course within the cut off times. As usual, the starts were spectacular under the highly capable watch of Col Ramsay as PRO and Louise Davis as starter. Anton Seychelle again provided ‘Endurance’ as the start boat and he did have a few anxious moments with entrants crowding the boat end of the line at the start. On Sunday, Page 14 The Manly Hotel St. Helena Cup 2014 Photo courtesy Julie Geldard Vidpicpro.com one of the competitors jagged the barging buoy which is set adjacent to the start boat. Luckily there was a general recall and the attendant rib boat was able to assist with uncoupling the errant boat and buoy! There are some great images of the race captured by Jules of Vidpicpro, and Jason also got some great shots from the start boat. These are available on the WMYC SHC website as well as on Jules‘s website at http:// vidpicpro.com/yacht-racing/the-manly-hotelst-helena-cup-2014/ The multihulls as usual generated some impressive speed around the course and looked as if they might entice some slower mono sailors over to the dark side. The cruising division included a classic division with some impressive entrants such as Skirmish, a Bluey Williams custom 32. Skirmish has been restored recently and looked fabulous; she took out 1st prize for both the Cruising and Classic divisions. November - December I 2014 At Sunday’s prize giving, the Club Patron Senator Ron Boswell - awarded his Cup to the top team for Saturday’s race which was ’The black rum core’ team of Black Jack Too, Kerumba and Corum. The Manly Hotel St. Helena Cup went to the top team for Saturday and Sunday which was ‘Dancing Girl Bet’ comprising Corrobboree, Bobbys Girl and The Gambler. IRC and Sports boat prizes were also awarded and full results can be viewed on the WMYC website. A big thanks to all our sponsors. The Club was certainly loud and merry on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. Saturday was the biggest night with a great band, good food and plenty of company. It is a tribute to Bob White, the Social Chairman who managed a very well appreciated event. Thanks go to all the helpers throughout the weekend. I trust we can put on another great event next year. Stewart Daniels coerced me into attending the AGM and when I was asked to leave the room, I knew something big was afoot. To be honoured with life membership was a very big surprise - totally unexpected but extremely rewarding. I guess that writing the Club’s history book had a fair bit to do with it, but perhaps 27 years of Club membership counts as well. It was 1987 when then Secretary Noel Gilbert welcomed me aboard in the customary letter of the time. We started with a berth on A Row where my son parked his 26ft Vintage sloop Hobo. Old timers may remember it and my 30ft trimaran Blue Dolphin being slipped right next to the Clubhouse on Dudley Young’s rubber tyred trolley. I was away a lot in those days doing engineering contracts in the mines and WMYC was simply a convenient mooring for the boats. It was only when I retired in 1999, that we could take part in Club activities, namely SAGS and a few working bees. I still have the brass bugle presented in those days to the last boat home in SAGS. In the next decade we got more serious about sailing and entered our 26ft quarter tonner Jasmin in the Club’s racing events. We upgraded to the 30 footer “The Point” in 2004 and entered her in many SAGS, WAGS, and combined Clubs' events over the next several years. We competed in all the St. Helena Cup races during this period and collected our share of poly carbonate drinking glasses. The Point won the Wooden Boat trophy in the 2006 Gladstone race. In more recent times Kev Maddox and I ran the SAGS for a year or two while wrapping up our racing career in the Bonbridge 27 “Southern Star”. Wynnum Manly Yacht Club Inc. It was 2010 when Des Clements advertised in “Soundings” for volunteers to join the club’s 50 year celebrations committee. I volunteered to write the proposed book and supply a band for the day. It was a chance to give something back to the Club which had provided for me for so long. There was never any problem sourcing material for the book. The Club’s archives meticulously kept by Karen were available. These included Year Books, “Soundings” and newsletters, committee minutes and photographs. A surprise find was a beautifully hand-written and bound copy of the Club’s first year of committee minutes. As Pam Pavey said to me at the time: “the problem will be not what goes into the book but deciding what to leave out.” It took two years and with my daughter’s help with graphic art and design, we finished the project in September 2012. Unfortunately the publishers could not deliver the bulk of the order until a week after the 50th anniversary party day and book sales suffered accordingly. May I take the opportunity to thank the Committee and those members at the 2014 AGM who voted for my life membership? It is an honour for which I shall forever be grateful. It is a privilege to join the company of life members Bill Haslet and Des Clements who assisted so much with the book. Soundings 5 Cool Apps for Mobile Devices By Stewart Daniels -"Saskia" Everyone has a smart phone or tablet these days. If you don’t, it’s time to go get one. These handy little devices are not only great for telecommunications, SMS, email and checking seabreeze.com.au. The real power is in the apps that you can install for a comparatively small cost if not for free. Here’s a list of apps every sailor will be interested in. I have only included ones you can use when out on the boat, away from mobile coverage areas. Just don’t forget your charger and adapter. 1) Navionics. This is probably the best known and most useful app for boaties. It turns your device into a feature rich GPS Chart Plotter for a fraction of the cost of purchasing a dedicated device. As a backup to your primary plotter or charts this app is fantastic. And it contains tide times at all the standard ports and gobs of additional information tucked away waiting for you to discover. A must have. 2) iGrib. Grid Encoded Binary (Grib) files are used to store weather information of all kinds and have been in use in commercial shipping for a long time. Long rage forecasts (7 days) can be downloaded in Grib file format and used in high end chart plotters and other devices. The Australian Bureau of Meteorology will sell you access to their weather service which is distributes Grib files for a pretty penny. iGrib allows you to download 7 day forecasts for anywhere on the planet, free of charge. Weather information is displayed in a very user friendly way on a form of electronic chart. The files are sourced from the American National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration agency (NOAA), and it doesn’t cost you to download them. Get your 7 day forecast before leaving and you don’t have worry about being in mobile phone range. Update the Grib files for your area whenever you are back in range. 3) HF Fax. If your iGrib weather information is old and you want an update whilst you are way out of mobile range, the next option is HF Fax. There are dedicated fax style machines that plug into your HF radio and convert messages sent over radio frequency to a weather map, and print them out. HF Fax replicates this and displays the weather map on screen rather than printing it out. Simply tune into the appropriate frequency at the appropriate time (information included in the app settings) and hold your device up to the HF radio speaker. Page 20 November - December I 2014 4) SailRacet.net Never be late for a start again, just enter the coordinates for the start line and based on your VMG the app tells you exactly when you will get to the line. This means you can time it better and hit the line at top speed, on time. This app has so many cool functions for the racing sailor; I’ll let you check it out for yourself. 5) Nav Lights This is just one of many apps that you can use to brush up on sailing and boating knowledge. You can learn and be quizzed on Navigation Lights, Pilotage, Day Shapes, International Regulations for Prevention of Collisions at sea and probably YA Racing Rules of Sailing. While these are 5 of the coolest apps you can use when not in mobile phone range there are a swag of them to discover for yourself. Simply search the Apple app store or Google market. Gimbals Movable mountings often found on shipboard lamps, compasses, etc., which provide dieting passengers an opportunity to observe the true motions of the ships in relation to them, and thus prevent any recently ingested food from remaining in their digestive systems long enough ti be converted into unwanted calories.. Gunwale Upper edge of the side of the boat, pronounced "gunnel," "gunn'l," "gnl," or "gn." By the way, many people have difficulty mastering nautical pronounciation, and this seems as good a place as any to address this problem. The effect to aim for is a cross between train announcements and the sound that comes from patients in a Dentists' chair. Probable the best way to develop a "sea mouth" is to practice speaking with an unopened chowder clam held in your mouth. Work on this sentence : "Gaff that grommet gasket to the garboard gudgeon gunter". It should come out something like "Gfthtgrmgsktthgbdgdgngnr". Remember, properly delivered nautical commands must be incomprehensible to the person toward whom they are directed even when accompanied by clear hand signals or pantomime indicating the desired action. Gong Buoy One of a class of sound-emitting buoys with movable hammers that hit bells or gongs when waves rock them. Buoys not equipped with active means of sound generation also send out characteristic sounds when struck, which help the sailor identify them. The nun and the can emit a sharp clunk or clank; the day beacon on pilings yields a deep thudding sound with some splintering noises; fixed channel markers surround by rip-rap (circle of stones) give off a grating, cracking, or crunching sound; channel-marking stakes produce a light snap; and moorings usually make a series of faint tapping noises as the pass along the hull. Greenwich Time Incorrect time in London. Page 22 November - December I 2014 H Hazard Any boat over 2 feet in length, the skipper of any such craft, any body of water, or any body of land within 100 meters of any body of water. Head Technically the toilet on the boat, although heads are in fact structurally much closer to the radioactive waste disposal systems that they resemble. A head's operation is rather complicated, but once mastered, it should present no particular difficulty to the boat owner or visitor. Approved methods of working the marine head are contained in the excellent , though somewhat superficial, seven-volume work, Principles and Operation of the Marine Head, published by the Department of Defence, in cooperation with the Department of Justice and the Surgeon General. Also, most manufacturers of shipboard sanitary units provide extensive audio visual materials on a loan basis to purchasers of their products, and many educational institutions in areas with large boating populations offer a basic 80-hour Wynnum Manly Yacht Club Inc. "hands on" course in Sanitary Navigation. Proper operation of the head is essential. Simply put, the head macerates and chlorinates a certain very restricted class of waste materials prior to discharge, transforming them into a chemical compound that annoys, but does not kill, marine life. Foreign matter must not be introduced to the head under any circumstances. Although it operates on the principle of a chain saw as the noise which accompanies it would suggest - it is highly susceptible to clogging. Heads that become clogged can result not just in considerable inconvenience, but in great expense as well, requiring the intervention of trained personnel with decontamination gear and remote handling equipment, and in extreme, but by no means uncommon, cases may lead to the abandoning of the boat. (Incidentally, in that regard, most insurance policies specifically exclude clogged heads in their coverage of the boat, or have a high excess, typically $50,000, for that category of risk). The key to the operation of the head is the addition at the appropriate moment of a special table, a macaroon-sized cake composed of a blend of potassium cyanide, phosgene, lye, prussic acid, formaldehyde, diatomaceous earth, ground glass, metal filings and high explosive. Though not specifically prohibited by the Geneva Convention, these tablets are regulated to some degree by the United Nations; in international waters, it is advisable to consult the various protocols that govern their transport and use. Healing A basic process affecting all sailboats, which begins with the boat leaning over as the wind presses on one side of its sails, and ends as the sailboat finally exhibits its natural tendency to come to a state of rest on the sea bottom Hydrophobia Fear of the water. Accepted by most courts in Australia as the basic test of fundamental sanity. Soundings Cruising Report By Darcey & Julie Glister, "R & R'" September Cruise Our Spring Season Cruise began with Dinner at our Club on Friday evening and oh what a night we had! Next day we met for breakfast at our Club. Eleven boats signed the register: Tardis, Silver Dawn, Lynndy 2, Lady Lonsdale, Figment, Abdul, Adamant, Ocean Maid, Star Dust, R & R and Haze, skippered by our new Vice Commodore. Following breakfast and our briefing on weather and destination all boats left the marina by 1030 and headed for Blakeleys. While the wind was kind to us as we crossed the paddock, it quickly changed once we reached Blakeleys. The 20 knot forecast was conservative, regular gusts were recorded at 35 knots. Mike Bryant attempted but www.manlybrokers.com was unsuccessful in launching his tender, affectionately named the Salad Bowl. Unfortunately, these windy conditions prevented our members from attending the beach activities and it was then decided by democratic vote, in view of the conditions, we would retreat to Deanbilla Bay, and tuck in close to the oyster leases in the South East corner of the Bay. Ocean Maid and R & R rafted up, to provide a social platform for the WMYC Cruisers to enjoy sundowners and some tasty savouries, whilst reflecting on a very interesting day on the water. All boat owners retreated to their boats by 2000 hours, for their meal and to settle in for the evening. www.oceanayacht.com (you can find us in the Muir Marine Building) R O B E LW E L L 0 41 8 1 3 0 2 1 5 M I K E D AV I D S O N 0 41 8 741 5 8 1 JOIN THE STRENGTH - WHERE OUR EXPERIENCE COUNTS Page 24 November - December I 2014 By 0800 the next day the cruisers started their engines or set their sails for the journey home. With an outgoing tide under the hull and a fresh southerly pushing us, we skillfully surfed the waves across the paddock and into Manly. Speaking for our cruising members, I would say we had an enjoyable weekend, an adventurous weekend, and most of all a positive learning experience in weather watch and boat handling in strong winds. This knowledge can only be gained by getting on the water and seizing the opportunity. I am happy to report that there were no incidents, and the camaraderie continues to grow and strengthen the relationships of our good members. Our next cruise is on the 6th -7th December Xmas break up at Horseshoe Bay Peel Island. Please lookout for notices by e-mail and on our web site. You will note these Saturdays follow the first Friday of the month dinner and entertainment gatherings at our Club House, arranged by Bob White Social Club Chairman. By combining these two Club social events on the same week end, we believe it gives our members more time to socialise, utilize and support our wonderful Club House as we should, plus maximise our social life and calendar. Please help us to spread the word, If your contact details have changed or are going to change please keep our Club Office informed. For simplicity, emailing is our preferred method of communication. Should you wish to speak to me direct my Contact details are Darcy Glister 0428237000 E-mail [email protected] We look forward to seeing you all at our club and on the water. Safe & Happy boating. Soundings Alcohol rules per Maritime Safety Queensland website Recreational ships The skipper must have a blood alcohol limit of less than 0.05, the same rules as on the road. The skipper is also responsible for the safety of the passengers and should be responsible for their alcohol consumption. The effects of alcohol are enhanced while on the water due to the sun, wind, waves and constant motion. Reflexes and response times to emergencies are slowed and swimming ability deteriorates considerably. Skippers of recreational boats should also be aware that, when their boat is anchored, it may still be considered to be used for navigation, and the blood alcohol limit applies. The limit does not change unless the boat is securely moored in a marina, to a jetty or wharf or on a swing mooring. Do your sails need attention? Thinking about a furling system? Soundings Manly Dragons by Jeff Hamanne - President Well that’s it. The 2013/14 Dragon boat season is finally over. It has been a long season, a whole 12 months of continuous training to reach the finale in Italy at the World Championships last month. Manly have again performed magnificently well on the world stage. We took on the best of the European and North American super powers and beat most of them. The regatta didn’t start too well. We arrived on Sunday to cold and wet weather. For months before I watched the forecasts as sunny and hot through summer. Not for us. We had a planned training day on Monday. Before we arrived there were rumours that the course had been closed due to the conditions. Manly are tough, we can handle anything, so off to the course we went. Well I can tell you it looked like a really bad day on the bay. The wind was strong and cold, blowing straight down the course building a good sized white cap wave. All training was cancelled. Not a good start for us. We managed to get a slot and train a bit on Tuesday, even though the conditions were hardly better. By the start of the 2k racing on Wednesday the wind was marginally better. Things improved over the next day and by the end of Thursday we were paddling in sunshine. In fact the end of the week got a bit hot in the grandstand. Manly achieved many great results, which I will list below. We entered 17 events and only missed 2 finals. We medalled in 8 of the 17 events. 5 Bronze, 2 Silver and 1 Gold medal. We came agonisingly close in a couple others. The Senior B men were 4th by 0.05s. We did all this with only 39 paddlers. Many of the big, dominant clubs had double that. That wraps it up for another year. Many thanks to the Wynnum Manly Yacht Club for your ongoing support. Without all the facilities we have here it wouldn’t be possible to perform as we do. Time is short to the next CCWC in Adelaide, April 2016. We have already started our planning to show the world what we can do in our own back yard. GO MANLY.
