The Lord said to him, “This is the land of which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, ‘I will give it to your descendants’; I have let you see it with your eyes, but you shall not cross over there.” Then Moses, the servant of the Lord, died there in the land of Moab, at the Lord’s command. He was buried in a valley in the land of Moab, opposite Bethpeor, but no one knows his burial place to this day. Moses was one hundred twenty years old when he died; his sight was unimpaired and his vigor had not abated. The Israelites wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days; then the period of mourning for Moses was ended. Joshua, son of Nun, was full of the spirit of wisdom, because Moses had laid his hands on him; and the Israelites obeyed him, doing as the Lord had commanded Moses. Never since has there arisen a prophet in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face. He was unequaled for all the signs and wonders that the Lord sent him to perform in the land of Egypt, against Pharaoh and all his servants and his entire land, and for all the mighty deeds and all the terrifying displays of power that Moses performed in the sight of all Israel. Matthew 22:34-40 (NRSV) When the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, and one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” He said to him,”’You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the greatest and first commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.” The NRSV is the New Revised Standard Version Sermon Notes “Laws of Life” CALENDAR Sunday, October 26 - GREAT PUMPKIN FESTIVAL / PRAY FOR OUR YOUNG ADULT MINISTRY 8:30a Café Worship (FH) 9:45a Sunday School for all ages 11:00a Traditional Worship Service - Laity Sunday (Sanctuary) 11:15a Kid’s Church (YR) 12:30p Angel Wings Liturgical Dance Practice (Sanctuary) 3:00p Blessing of the Animals (Church Office Yard) Monday, October 27 - GREAT PUMPKIN FESTIVAL / PRAY FOR OUR YOUNG ADULT MINISTRY 1:00p Preschool Training (CR2) 2:00p Red Cross Blood Drive (FH & Entrance) 5:00p Girl Scouts Troop #3411 Meeting (CR2) 6:00p Beatitudes (YR) 7:30p Pastor’s Monday Night Study - Promises of God (FH) 8:30p AA Meeting - Warner Group (YR) Tuesday, October 28 - GREAT PUMPKIN FESTIVAL / PRAY FOR OUR YOUNG ADULT MINISTRY 7:30a Community Round Table - at Panera Bread 10:00a UMW Book Club (Parlor) 11:00a Great Food Give Away (Parking Lot) 6:00p Creative Circle (CR1) 6:00p Knit Together (CR2) 6:00p Women’s Emmaus Reunion Group (Parlor) 6:00p Men’s Emmaus Reunion Group (FH) 7:00p AA Meeting - Sunset Group (YR) Wednesday, October 29 - GREAT PUMPKIN FESTIVAL / PRAY FOR OUR YOUNG ADULT MINISTRY 9:30a Wednesday Morning Bible Study (CR2) 12:00p AA Meeting - Serenity Seekers (YR) 2:00p Food Pantry open till 4:00 (Back of Church Office) 5:30p Girl Scout troop #3411 Meeting (CR2) 6:45p WOW - Worship on Wednesday 7:00p Cherub Choir Practice (YR) 7:30p Chancel Choir Practice (Choir Room) Thursday, October 30 - GREAT PUMPKIN FESTIVAL/PRAY FOR OUR YOUNG ADULT MINISTRY 9:00a BLP Harvest Celebration (FH, Parlor, YR, CR1 & CR2) 6:00p Carillon Choir Practice (Sanctuary) 6:30p Webelos Den Meeting (CR2) 7:00p Christian Believers (FH) 7:00p Disciple I (YR) Friday, October 31 - GREAT PUMPKIN FESTIVAL / PRAY FOR OUR YOUNG ADULT MINISTRY 9:00a BLP Harvest Celebration (FH, Parlor, YR, CR1 & CR2) 5:30p Youth Ministries Trunk N Treat (Gravel Parking Lot) Saturday, November 1 - PRAY FOR OUR YOUNG ADULT MINISTRY 8:30a Pastor’s Prayer Partners (CR2) 10:00a Charge Conference (Sanctuary, FH, Entrance & YR) KEY: FH = Fellowship Hall, YR = Youth Room, CR1 - Conf. We will list all those who have passed away since November of last year. Those who were church members will be honored with the ringing of a bell and a moment of silence. Those who were not members of the church will be listed in the bulletin, but their names will not be read. FELLOWSHIP YOUTH -Trunk N Treat is coming up!! Please come out and support us in any way you can. RELAY FOR LIFE CROSSES - The Relay for life crosses are available in the Church office. Stop in and get yours today. PUMPKIN PATCH NEWS - Our big festival day on October 18th was a major success. The community had a chance to see the best of La Plata United Methodist Church as we raised money for the Fairy Godmother Project, a local charity whose members provide services to families of children battling cancer. Thank you to everyone who helped make the day one to remember. But we still have some pumpkins to sell, and every one sold will mean an increase in the donation which we can make to the Fairy Godmother Project. We are very short handed for this last week of sales. If you are able to spare two hours to help cover one of our shifts in the patch (including today, 4 - 6 shift), please see Dan Brennan after the service, or go to www.laplataumc.org and follow the pumpkin links to sign up online. You are welcome to bring the kids along. After all, what is more natural than children in a pumpkin patch? Please help, you'll be glad you did, and you'll earn one of our coveted pumpkin patch hats. THE ROTARY CLUB OF CHARLES COUNTY - La Plata is seeking families interested in hosting a high school aged foreign exchange student in the 2015-2016 school year. It's a great way for you and your family to learn about a foreign culture while sharing your culture with someone from abroad. If you are interested, please contact Chris Zabriskie at [email protected] or at 202-625-2315 for more information. FAITH SHARING LOOK AROUND YOU - Do you see anyone that you do not know? No need to embarrass them, or embarrass yourself by asking "Are you new?" Instead, just stick out your hand and introduce yourself. Then enjoy a pleasant conversation of getting to know each other. In time you'll discover if they are long lost members, or here for the first time. Either way, you get to make a new friend. Thank you for being one of the friendliest and most caring congregations around. PLEASE INVITE YOUR FRIENDS - It is the simplest and most effective way to share Christ with others: just invite your friends to church with you. Most people who grew up as Christians and who aren't in a church say they just haven't found a church they like, and because no one has invited them. Most people if you ask, will say yes to an invitation. Just ask them to come to church for a special event, or special Sunday, or to hear a sermon you think will help them. ADMINISTRATION NOTARY PUBLIC - Require the services of a Notary Public? Stop in the church office and see the secretary, Karen Hamner, she is now a commissioned notary. PRAYER LIST - Please take a moment and look at the bulletin prayer list, if you have information regarding anyone on the list, please call Karen in the church office so that she can update the list. Thanks! KITCHEN CLEAN-UP - In preparation for the Harvest Dinner, the kitchen committee will be cleaning the kitchen, there are many dishes and bowls that have been left after events, please stop in the kitchen and pick up any that belong to you.
