O God, we acknowledge you today as Lord, not only of individuals, but
of nations and governments. We thank you for the privilege of being able
to organize ourselves politically and of knowing that political loyalty
does not have to mean disloyalty to you. We thank you for your law,
which our Founding Fathers acknowledged and recognized as higher than
any human law. We thank you for the opportunity that each election puts
before us, to exercise our solemn duty not only to vote, but to influence
countless others to vote, and to vote correctly. Lord, we pray that your
people may be awakened. Let them realize that while politics is not their
salvation, their response to you requires that they be politically active.
Awaken your people to know that they are not called to be a sect fleeing
the world. But rather a community of faith renewing the world. Awaken
them that the same hands lifted up to you in prayer are the hands that pull
the lever in the voting booth; That the same eyes that read your Word are
the eyes that read the names on the ballot, and that they do not cease to be
Christians when they enter the voting booth. Awaken your people to a
commitment to justice to the sanctity of marriage and the family, to the
dignity of each individual human life, and to the truth that human rights
begin when human lives begin, and not one moment later. Lord, we
rejoice today that we are citizens of your kingdom. May that make us all
the more committed to being faithful citizens on earth. We ask this
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Gospel: Matthew 22:34-40
Matthew recounts the incident in which a
lawyer, seeking to entrap Jesus, asks,
“Teacher, which commandment of the law is
the greatest?”
With
simplicity and
authority, Jesus responds that the first
commandment is to love God with one‛s
entire being; the second is to love one‛s
neighbor as oneself.
“‛Teacher, which commandment of the law is
the greatest?‛…‛You shall not molest or
oppress the alien, for you were once aliens,
yourselves on the land of Egypt. You shall
not wrong any widow or orphan If ever you
wrong them and they cry out to me, I will
surely hear their cry…I will hear him for I
am compassionate.‛”
It was a lawyer, one of the Pharisees, who
approached Jesus with the question
concerning the great commandment. Jesus‛
response reflected His knowledge of the
Hebrew scriptures, which spoke of love of
God and love of neighbor. It is easy for us
to quote the prayer which the devote Jewish
person recites five times each day. “O
Shema…‛
Once when Jesus was asked who is to be
considered ‘neighbor‛ he responded with the
parable of the Good Samaritan. It is easy
for us to repeat the same teaching. Do we
live it?
Our World today is filled with refugees and
asylees. Years ago they were called DP‛s
(displaced persons). In our own country we
are unable to provide legislative protection
for millions of immigrants living among us.
Many have fled tyrannical governments,
unjust discrimination, armed conflicts and
economic deprivation. We reluctantly accept
some refugees, but turn away countless
others, or refuse to legislate positively in
their behalf. Isn‛t it time that we learn
from our Judeo-Christian biblical roots,
what the law, the prophets and Jesus
Himself taught us?
Jesus summed up the teaching from two
sources. We can do the same, based upon a
single word – respect.

In this memoir, set as deeply in his mind as in the
Southeast Asian jungle, a young American soldier embarks
on a journey to a war that, for him, will never be over.
The world was a playground for Mickey,
a naive Irish American kid bored with
his life. His father served in World War
II, his brother was a Marine in Vietnam;
now it was his turn. His 365 days in
Vietnam builds in torment until an
attack on a bunker complex in Cambodia.
Wounded, his friend captured, he
becomes a tormented survivor knowing
he is always just a heartbeat from death.
