"It's important to reiterate the more we talk
about these scams, the more people are made
aware of them the less likely they are to become
victims. Please spread the word to your relatives,
neighbours, colleagues and friends, especially
those who are elderly or vulnerable.
Don’t forget the regular events at
Dunkerton, Withyditch and Tunley halls
"If you are unsure of anyone asking you for
details, we would advise you to be overly cautious.
There are some simple but effective measures
people can take to minimise the risk of becoming a
victim of these scams."
NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH
Foiling the Phone Scammer
We are reminding people to be careful of
phone scammers after several reports of bogus
callers claiming to be police or security companies.
.
If someone claims to be from a company
check their details, look at their website and see if
they have any testimonials.
.
Call the company, but don't use a number the
caller gives you. Look one up on the internet or in
a phone directory. Before you make the call, either
use a different telephone or wait for a dialling tone
to ensure the bogus callers are not still on the line.
.
If the person claims to be from the local
police, always ask for their collar number or staff
I.D number. Every officer or staff member has one.
You can then call 101 to check they are who they
say they are.
.
Don't release any personal information
including any bank details that could be exploited
unless you have confirmed the caller is genuine
and reputable and you actually need what is being
offered.
.
The police and the banks will never ask you
for banking details or PIN numbers on the phone.
There have several incidents in North
Somerset and South Gloucestershire over the last
month where residents received a call on their
landline from someone purporting to be from
either the police or a security company.
An elderly couple in Clevedon, North
Somerset, received a call from a man claiming to
be from "The Crime Reduction Unit of the police".
He was trying to persuade the couple to buy an
alarm for £1.00 that would connect them to the
local police and fire service. He also wanted to
make an appointment to visit their home. They
weren't sure about the man so they hung up and
told their neighbour, who alerted police.
In a similar vein, an elderly lady in South
Gloucestershire was made aware of a potential
scam after a friend received a call. When she then
got a phone call herself she was prepared.
She was called by a man who stated he was
from a security company wanting to conduct a
home survey. She asked for the proposal to be put
in writing and for a letter to be sent with some
literature to her so she could speak to her son, at
which point the man put the phone down.
Final date for copy for the next edition of
The Batch is
Wednesday 15h October 2014.
Please submit copy to the Editor c/o

edition
PC Fin Simmons from Avon and Somerset
Police said: "I encourage people to take care when
they received unsolicited calls from people. The
two ladies who received calls did exactly the right
thing in trying to get the person to prove their
identity. Reputable companies or genuine callers
will be happy to prove who they are and provide
identification.

W.I. Report
Dog Fouling Notice
Dunkerton W.I. met at Tunley Recreation
Centre on Tuesday 9th September. The meeting
was well-attended. Our two fund-raising events,
namely Sue Snook's garden party and Elisabeth
Farnaby's cheese and wine supper had been a
resounding success with a profit of £288.17.
Members are looking forward to a coach trip to
Forde Abbey later this month. Most ladies are
keen to enjoy another Christmas meal at the King
William, Tunley this year.
It has been an absolute pleasure to have
lived in Dunkerton for over 20 years, the wonderful
countryside, the array of birds, the sound of
horses going by, and the diverse wildlife make it a
truly special place to live and as residents we try
to do our best to keep it that way and respect the
countryside and all who live in it.
I consider myself a responsible owner of
three dogs, not only by keeping my dogs on the
lead whilst out walking but more importantly
cleaning up after my dogs. It’s an unavoidable byproduct of owning a dog, and therefore it’s every
owner’s moral duty and legal responsibility to
clean up after their dog whether it’s in a town or in
the countryside. There are no excuses! Fouling is
unacceptable and failure to promptly clean up dog
mess can result in a prosecution and fine.
Our speaker for the evening was Ms Josie
Pownall, her subject: Military Uniforms- Design
and Manufacturing. She is instrumental in
providing uniforms and accessories to the military
services, providing for all ages, all walks of life,
and for all weathers. For instance, she had to find
3,000 wellies and waders for the army when they
were assisting with the Somerset Levels Flood
disaster. She passed around beautifully handembroidered badges and samples of trumpet
banner flags using fine gold thread. A ceremonial
cap (or bearskin) was also presented. Ms Pownall
explained how willow from the Somerset levels
was used to form the frame inside and only brown
bear fur (dyed black) can be used to create helmet
as we know it.
Please be thoughtful no matter where you
walk your dog and leave this beautiful area in
which we live acceptable to all. Many thanks.
Laura Loxton
Dunkerton
Ms Pownall displayed a range of clothing,
including underwear, emphasizing the
importance of safety and comfort in designing
and manufacturing uniforms. She herself had
been responsible for one of the designs, and
together with her dedication to her job had been
awarded an MBE. Her enthusiasm and knowledge
certainly came through in her talk and members
were spell-bound!
The next meeting is a harvest supper
on 14th October at Tunley Recreation
Centre 7.15p.m.

Manders Orchard Now Belongs
To Everyone
27TH DUNKERTON PARISH HALL
ANNUAL SHOW 2014
Dunkerton Parish Hall had
another splendid display of garden
produce, cookery and handicrafts for
its 27th Annual Show. The excellent
summer weather this year aided a
bumper crop of entries across many
classes. The children's classes were
well supported and were judged once
again by Sue Snook who has judged
every one of the previous Shows. The
cookery classes were judged for the
first time by Sophie Smith, past
winner of many Show prizes.
Please come and enjoy this lovely space.
Here are the judges busy sampling the
exhibits:
On Sunday the 14th of September
the Manders family, members of the Parish
Council and members of the Orchard
working group met to pay our respects to
the late David Manders and to celebrate
the handover of his orchard to the
community. A beautiful sign was erected
to mark the occasion and be a reminder
of David's contributions to our village.
Now that the orchard is open, all
are welcome to come and enjoy it. It is a
great place to let the kids explore and a
restful place for all. Should you wish to get
involved, perhaps with suggestions for the
fruit, planning for an event (it's harvest
time soon), the occasional loan of a lawn
mower, or even an hour of swinging a
strimmer then please
email [email protected]
tweet @mandersorchard.
The trophies were presented by
the Hall's newly elected Treasurer,
James Hender. Winners included
Charlotte de Grey, Clare Taylor,
Steve Uphill, Jo Harrison, Michael de
Grey, Ben Beechener, Imogen
Dallimore, Sarah Swords, Jane Hasell,
Charlotte Dixon and June Harrison.
But special mention must be made of
Robert Gardiner who won the May
Gooding Cup for his Victoria sponge
cake which was the best entry in the
cookery classes.
See you there soon.

From the Rectory
Over recent weeks we have witnessed a
tragedy of historic proportions unfold in Iraq
with thousands of innocent people at immediate
risk of death for no other reason than their
religious beliefs. It is impossible not to be
profoundly dismayed by the barbaric acts
carried out by ISIS fighters that threaten to alter
permanently the county’s complex and ancient
religious heritage.
The forced and bloody exodus of
Christians and other religious minorities from
an area which has been at the heart of Christian
civilisation in the Nineveh region for almost
2,000 years, underline in very clear terms the
appalling inhumanity of the perpetrators of
these crimes.

We should not allow, however, the
magnitude of the crimes we are witnessing to
paralyze us from responding prayerfully with
Christ-like love and compassion or from
pressing the international community to
accelerate and intensify their own humanitarian
and diplomatic efforts.
As the Archbishop of Canterbury made
clear in his recent statement on the subject no
effort should be spared to protect all groups
forcefully displaced by this conflict.

Historically, red vestments are worn on
the feasts of martyrs – those who have died for
their faith – and so it is fitting that in the relative
peace of our own environment that we are
united with those whose lives are in danger.
This initiative has been taken up by the
PCC at All Saint’s Church where we are doing
something similar during the months of
September and October. We shall be praying not
only for Christian communities of all traditions
but also for those of other faiths whose lives are

Middle East but also in Nigeria, India, The
Sudan, Indonesia, North Korea, Egypt and
Pakistan.
HARVEST CELEBRATIONS SUNDAY 5th OCTOBER
This will culminate on Sunday October
when the focus of our worship at the 9.30
Communion Service will be on the suffering
Church throughout the world.
Meanwhile, in your prayers please give
thanks for the steadfast, inspiring witness of
persecuted Christians who remain faithful to
Christ even as they are facing suffering and
oppression.
3.00 p.m. Bring and Share Picnic
Tea in the churchyard (in the church
if wet). Drinks provided. All you need
is a plate of food to share (cake,
scones, biscuits, etc) and, if it is a
fine day, perhaps something to sit on
outside.
Pray that they will know the Lord’s
comfort throughout all they endure. Ask Him to
sustain them, protect them and provide for
them. At the same time pray also for believers in
the West, who may endure contempt and
hostility, albeit at a much lower level, that they
will be encouraged by the example of their
suffering brothers and sisters.
4.00 p.m. Harvest Thanksgiving
Service in the church, led by the
Rector and musicians from the parish.
Please bring your harvest gifts for
display in the church and for auction

ISSUE 69
So let me use this article to encourage
everyone to ask the question: ‘Is there
something else that I could do to support my
church and to serve play my part in serving my
local community?’ If there is I am sure your offer
to help will be warmly received.
Bishop’s Message – August 2014
Rt Revd Peter Hancock, Bishop of Bath &
Wells
‘It rained and rained and rained and
rained and….’
With warm Christian greetings
I don’t know what you did on Bank
Holiday Monday, but I was taking part in the
Annual Raft Race in Wells. And my word did it
rain. It was so wet you couldn’t tell who had
fallen off their raft into the moat and who were
simply spectators.
Rt Revd Peter Maurice, Bishop of
Taunton
It was such a shame, as so much work
had gone into organising it. I felt particularly sad
for the stallholders, most of whom were
volunteers, who had come to raise money and
support for various local charities. As the rain
poured down they were forced to seek shelter
under trees and gazebos. There were lots of
good causes represented, with a wide range of
charities all of which do a fantastic job in
different ways. It made me realise again just
how fortunate we are in this country to have so
many charities which together provide vital
support, advice, care or assistance to millions of
people each week. Most of that amazing work
would not happen without volunteers playing
their part and giving their time.
Withyditch
Chapel
Centre
The same is true in the church. We are
so richly blessed with dedicated people who give
so generously of their time, maintaining our
churches and ensuring that they are open and
welcoming; overseeing church finances and
safeguarding; serving on committees or as a
school governor; working with children and
young people; praying; taking services;
preaching; visiting and caring for people. The list
is endless. In many of our smaller churches,
however, it is not always easy to get people who
will serve as churchwardens, treasurers or
church officers and sometimes the ‘turn’ on the
coffee or flower rota seems to come round
somewhat too often.

DUNKERTON PARISH
COUNCIL
Traffic Priority Signage Fairfield Build Out
Tunley. The Give Way road markings at Fairfield,
Lansdown View and Blind
Lane build outs have all been repainted.
Report on the Parish Council Meeting
held at Tunley Recreation Centre on
Thursday 31 July 2014
Westbury Terrace Drain. The drainage pipes that
run down across the field behind the hedge will be
thoroughly jetted, the situation will then be
monitored, and if this does not significantly
improve matters then an additional extra drain will
be installed.
PLANNING
The Core Strategy has passed its final hurdle and
has been adopted by B&NES Council.
Drains in The Hollow Dunkerton. Work will
take place on additional new drains and gullies,
plus replacement drain covers that have a greater
water catchment area to replace the existing small
drain covers. The objective is to catch all of the
water into the drains from the many springs in The
Hollow; hopefully resulting in no surface water
running down the lane during the winter months.
This drainage work will require closure of The
Hollow, whilst closed repair work to the surface of
the lane will be carried out including increasing the
carriageway width on the bend at the top of The
Hollow.
Possible Unauthorised Development- There
appears to be a potential infringement of Planning
Regulations with a campsite / caravan site being
set up on the triangle of land at Tunley fork. This
has been reported to B&NES planning
enforcement team who is investigating.
Planning Application Ref 14/02794/FUL
Sunnymead Palmers Lane Tunley - Erection of
an extension and alterations to dwelling. The
parish council unanimously supported the
validated application and requested a condition
being attached regarding the demolition of the
outbuildings prior to the applicants taking up
residence. At the request of the B&NES planning
officer Cllrs also considered the proposed
alternative modern design deciding to support it,
reserving the right to review in more detail the
alternative design if it is subsequently submitted in
full.
Drains in Withyditch. Work will be put in hand
to realign the road surface so that the three drains
just below the entrance to
Dovecote Barn will in future catch the surface
water at this location. Regarding the surface water
further down Withyditch Lane on the corner just
prior to Engine Bridge - the drainage engineer will
contact the land owner to seek permission for this
surface water to be channelled into the corner of
the field to soak away into the landfill on the old
railway. The drainage engineer has met with the
owners of Dovecote Barn and the owner of the
adjacent fields and is grateful for their assistance
and co-operation. She is impressed with the
measures that they have both installed to prevent
surface run off from their respective properties
onto the highway.
Planning Application Ref 14/02887/FUL Lower
Tunley Farm Stoneage Lane Tunley - Retention
of a general purpose agricultural storage
building. (Retrospective). The parish council was
unanimous in objecting to this application
considering the proposed barn to be too large and
in the wrong location. Cllrs stated that the
applicant should have built the barn he had
permission for under the agricultural notification
and not the present barn or the amended version as
proposed by this application. Cllrs Patch and
Gardiner did not participate in the discussion or
vote on this application due to their declared
interests.
Damage to Lanes due to the closure of the
B3115 November ‘13. Work to rebuild the
collapsed roadside verge at the western end of
Church Lane will be scheduled for late summer /
early autumn.

We enjoyed fundraising events in the
summer, our first ever 8 a side tournament which
was won by Matt’s Magicians and we also held a tug
of war on the same day which was won by the
Weaverbirds. Its hope we can make them an annual
event. Two weeks later the 10th Freda Hookings
Memorial Match was against Timsbury Athletic this
year who won the game. Funds raised at both events
will go towards updating the changing rooms and
club facilities.

Bus Service Changes
Service 177/178 (Bath – Bristol): A number of
changes are being made to the timetable for
journeys on Sundays and Public Holidays.
Specifically the timetable for Service 177 is being
withdrawn on these days, however Service 178 is
being enhanced at the same time. The latter will
see the route on these days extended so that most
journeys run between Bath and Bristol (instead of
Bath and Midsomer Norton/Paulton as at present).
This will give people living in Radstock, Midsomer
Norton, Paulton and Farmborough at least twice
as many opportunities to travel to and from Bristol,
on Sundays / Public Holidays, once the changes
are made. People living in Keynsham (Park
Estate) or Writhlington concerned about the
withdrawal of Service 177 on Sundays and Public
Holidays should note that Services 38 and 179 will
provide alternatives for them.
NatureChild
A weekly nature club for under 5 year olds and
their parents/carers. Thursday mornings in term
time from 10.00-11.45 am, meeting at the start of
the track to Greyfield Woods in High Littleton. There
is a charge of £4 for 2-5 year olds, £2 for under 2s
and babies under 6 months are free.
Hot
chocolate or other drinks and a healthy snack are
provided. Activities include fire making, animal
tracking, natural art/craft, mini-beast hunts, stream
games and much more. There is a £1 discount for
CVWG members. Please contact Emily for details
on 07812 155 659.

Service 179 (Bath – Midsomer Norton): The
route of this service is being amended, as is
the Sunday and Public Holiday timetable.
Specifically on Sundays and Public Holidays the
timetable is being amended and all journeys are
being extended to serve Writhlington via
Radstock. In Writhlington buses will start and
terminate at Manor Park. Elsewhere, across all
days of operation, buses in Midsomer Norton will
start and terminate at Midsomer Norton Library
from 31 August.
