HOW TO CHOOSE THE SHORT-TERM OPTIONAL
SUBJECTS?

 The choices are made for your upcoming 8 th OR 9th
grades.
 Choose two (1st and 2nd choices) short-term optional
courses (1 hour per week) and two (3 rd and 4th)
alternative short-term optional courses. Mark your
choices and alternatives on the form. Think carefully
about the order of your choices in terms of your
preferences and interest in the course.
 Evaluation of the short -term courses is passed/ failed.
 You will choose optional courses together with your
parent or guardian. Remember that you commit to study
the short-term courses during your school year. So,
consider your options carefully.
 REMEMBER ALTERNATIVE CHOICES!
Sometimes there may not be enough students to fill the
class
that you selected as your favourite one. Your choice also
may
not be given, if it overlaps in your schedule with another
class.

Tavoitteet:
Lakitiedon
kurssilla
tutustumme
Suomen
lakeihin

oikeusjärjestelmään. Pohdimme sitä, miten oikea ja väärä yhteiskunnassamme
määritellään ja miten lakien noudattamista valvotaan. Selvittelemme myös,
millaisista teoista seuraa rangaistus ja miten muille aiheutettuja vahinkoja
korvataan. Perehdymme nuorille tärkeisiin lakeihin ja sääntöihin sekä
tutustumme oikeuksiimme ja velvollisuuksiimme.
Sisältö: Opiskelemme esimerkkien avulla ja teemme usein työtä ryhmissä.
Tutustumme syyslukukaudella Poliisimuseoon ja keväällä vierailemme
Tampereen käräjäoikeuden istunnossa.

2. DIGGING DEEPER TO ANCIENT WORLD
8th or 9th grade
Aims: Are you interested Greek mythology, the lives of people in Ancient Rome
or the pharaohs of Ancient Egypt? Or would you like to know more about the
Incas of South America or Ancient China? In this history course we will learn
more about ancient cultures in 2600 BCE – 500 CE.
Contents: At the beginning of the course we will make a timeline and plan the
contents together. Each student will choose an individual topic. We will work in
small groups, in English. Students will prepare presentations for the end of the
term.

3. CHINESE
The Chinese language entails fascinating history, culture, legends. Spoken
Chinese is like music, written Chinese like pictures. Studying and using Chinese
develops one’s brain because both hemispheres of the brain are needed when
reading a language based on pictures.

China is one of the fastest developing markets. So, in the future there will be a
growing demand for experts on the Chinese language. Join the Chinese
wonder!
On the short-term course in Chinese you will learn to cope in everyday
situations. The emphasis is on listening and speaking. You will get to know the
most common (and the oldest in the world) characters and learn to write in
pinyin. You’ll also familiarize yourself with Chinese customs, festivals and food.
You’ll learn the cultural aspects by doing things yourself.
Chinese is the number 1 language in the world. If you know Chinese, you will
stand out!
Kiinan kieli on kiehtovaa historiaa, kulttuuria, legendoja. Kiina on puhuttuna
kuin musiikkia, kirjoitettuna kuin kuvakieltä. Kiinan kielen opiskelu ja
käyttäminen kehittää aivoja, koska kuviin perustuvien merkkien lukemiseen
tarvitaan sekä aivojen vasenta että oikeaa puolta.
Kiina on maailman nopeimmin kehittyviä markkina-alueita, joten kiinan kielen
osaajista on tulevaisuudessa suuri tarve. Tule mukaan kiinalaiseen ihmeeseen!
Kiinan lyhytkurssilla opit selviytymään arkipäiväisissä tilanteissa. Painopiste on
kuuntelemisessa ja puhumisessa. Tutustutaan yleisimpiin, maailman
vanhimpiin kirjoitusmerkkeihin ja opetellaan kirjoittamaan pinyin-kirjoituksella.
Tutustut myös kiinalaiseen tapa-, juhla- ja ruokakulttuuriin. Kulttuuriin
tutustutaan toiminnallisesti itse tekemällä.
4.DIGITAL LANGUAGE LEARNING (English, German, Swedish)

-developing ICT skills across a range of programs and contexts, considering
appropriate design & layout
-producing multimodal texts: combining two or more modes of communication
(e.g. written, aural and visual) to create meaning

images, video-clips and sound on a website or CD-.rom, or the combination of
images, speech and sound in moving-image texts

5. ENGLISH MEDIA SKILLS
You will learn and explore various aspects of media culture, from social
networking sites and lifestyle magazines to films and overall media literacy. You
will explore the importance of both online and offline communication and test
new methods. You will develop your critical thinking, presentation and online
research skills.

6. CREATIVE ENGLISH AND DRAMA - Literature, writing,
acting, filming and editing
You’ll study literature and hone your writing skills through practical exercises in
especially creative writing and play-writing. You will also develop your reading
and presentation skills as well as skills in online, audio and digital media, as
well as in video and photographic production.
7. CULTURE, TRADITIONS AND CUSTOMS IN ENGLISH
SPEAKING COUNTRIES
This course is a conversational approach to the various customs and traditions
in the world´s English speaking areas. Get to know the Scottish haggis,
American line dancing, Australian haka and South African Apartheid through
online research, projects and conversation.
8. SPELA OCH PRATA PÅ SVENSKA
How to learn Swedish in a fun way? Let´s get together, talk and play games to
improve your vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation and fluency.
9. CULTURA ESPAÑOLA Syventävä kurssi 8.lk 9.lk
An experimental and conversational approach to Spanish speaking cultures:
music, food, dance sports and lifestyle.

10. LES MEDIAS ET LA CULTURE EN FRANCAIS/ RANSKAN
KIELI Syventävä kurssi 8. tai 9.lk
Increase the pupil’s cultural knowledge of France. The pupil will get to know the
cultural things of the target country in many interesting ways. We will watch
films, cook local delicacies, listen to music and prepare small presentations.
Some important cultural persons and festivals will be discussed. We also read
different text types, such as poems, cartoons, fairy tales and lyrics. Active
participation and presence in the class is required to pass the course.

Ranskalaisen kulttuuritietämyksen syventäminen
Sisältö: Oppilas perehtyy monipuolisesti kielialueen kulttuuriin. Tunneilla
katsotaan esim. filmejä, kokataan, tutustutaan musiikkiin, kulttuurihenkilöihin
ja juhlapäiviin sekä valmistetaan pieniä esityksiä.

12. CREATIVE COOK
8.-9. lk.
You will learn to cook tasty food cross- kitchen style, combining familiar and
exotic flavors. This course is to support students’ creativity and independency
in cooking. We will also bake few times in this course.
Kekseliäs kotikokki
Opi tekemään maukasta ruokaa cross- kitchen tyyliin, kotoisia ja eksoottisia
makuja yhdistellen. Kurssilla on tarkoitus tukea oppilaan luovuutta ja
itsenäisyyttä ruoan valmistuksessa. Mukana on myös leivontaa.
LIIKUNTA PHYSICAL EDUCATION
13. WEIGHT TRAINING COURSE 2 (KUNTOSALIKURSSI)
Aims: The aim of the course is to learn how to practice and behave in the local
public gym. Pupils will learn the basics of strength training program planning
and correct weightlifting techniques.

Contents: Theory and practical exercises in the gym
Assessment: passed/failed
To pass the course, the pupil needs to work through the exercises given during
the lessons. Teaching will be given in English but learning will be supported in
Finnish language, if needed.
14. SKILLS & CONDITION COURSE 2
Aims: The goal of the course is to help participants find sports they are
interested in and get them to do them actively
Contents: Team sports, racket games, physical exercise
Assessment: passed/failed
To pass the course, the pupil needs to work through the exercises given during
the lessons. Teaching will be given in English but learning will be supported in
Finnish language, if needed.
15. TEAM SPORTS
Aims: The goal of the course is to take part of in different team sports that
strengthen motor skills but also help to develop social skills.
Contents: Team sports
Assessment: passed/failed
To pass the course, the pupil needs to work through the exercises given during
the lessons. Teaching will be given in English but learning will be supported in
Finnish language, if needed.
MATEMATIIKKA MATHEMATICS
16. MATH SUPPORT COURSE FOR THE 8TH GRADERS
Aims: The aim of the course is to improve student’s basic skills for those
students who need extra help in math.
Contents: The course follows the same topics as ordinary teaching giving
pupil’s a change to get extra practice and help to get through math courses.
During the course at least the following topics will be covered: Basic
mathematic operations, algebraic expressions, equations, some geometry.
Assessment: passed/failed

Finnish language, if needed.
17. LAAJA MATEMATIIKKA - MATH PREP COURSE FOR IB
The aim of this course is to prepare pupil for studying math in IB (tai laaja
matematiikka). Student should have at least good (8) skills of math prior to the
course
The contents of the course are for example: powers, polynomials, rational
expressions.
Assessment, passed: student is able to work through most of the tasks given
during the lessons and passes the exam at the end of each period.
Matematiikan preppauskurssi lukion laajan matematiikan opintoihin tai IB:lle.
Hyvät matematiikan taidot (vähintään 8) ovat perusedellytys tästä kurssista
selviytymiselle.

MUSIIKKI MUSIC
18. BAND COURSE BÄNDIKURSSI
During the course students will learn to play and sing in a group and improve
their musicianship and singing. We play and sing famous pop, rock, musical
and jazz pieces.
Tavoitteet:
- Mukava yhdessä musisoiminen
- Musiikillisten taitojen kehittäminen eri bändisoittimissa ja laulussa
- Yhteismusisoinnin ja esiintymistaitojen vahvistaminen
Sisältö: Kurssilla harjoitellaan perusteita eri bändisoittimista ja mikkilaulusta.
Kappaleina ovat tunnetut pop-, rock-, jazz- ja musikaalisävelmät. Voi itse valita
keskittyykö soittamiseen vai laulamiseen. Yhteismusisointiin voi osallistua
myös omalla instrumentilla.

19. SUOMEN KIELI MEDIASSA
Kurssisisältö määräytyy oppilaiden senhetkisen suomen kielen taidon mukaan.
Kurssilla käsitellään erilaisia mediatekstejä ja harjoitellaan niiden kirjoittamista
sekä katsotaan ja analysoidaan suomenkielisiä elokuvia ja muita ohjelmia.
Finnish language in the media
The course description depends on the current language skills of students.
Different media texts are examined and written, and Finnish movies and other
television programs are watched and analyzed during the course.
KÄSITYÖ CRAFT
20. SEW IT UP
Student designs the product or products which she intends to prepare during
the course. The technique will be chosen based on student’s interest. We get
the needed materials together from shops. Student needs to participate and
work actively during lessons to pass the course.
Oppilas suunnittelee itse tuotteen tai tuotteet, jotka hän valmistaa kurssin
aikana. Käytettävä tekniikka valitaan oppilaan oman kiinnostuksen mukaan.
Materiaalit käydään hankkimassa kaupoista yhdessä. Saadakseen hyväksytyn
suorituksen oppilaan on käytävä tunneilla ja työskenneltävä aktiivisesti.
21. TECHNICAL CRAFT – CREATIVE PROJECTS
Design a creative product. Construct your own items out of wood, metal or
plastic. It is also possible to choose electric kits or design an electrical product.
The item could be designed for daily use or decorative purposes. Problemsolving skill development and study of product design and manufacturing
technologies are used.

Suunnitellaan ja valmistetaan tuotteita puusta, metallista ja muovista. Voit
valita myös

elektroniikkasarjojen rakentelun tai suunnitella oman sähköllä toimivan
laitteen. Työskentelyn tavoitteena on ongelmanratkaisutaitojen kehittäminen ja
tuotesuunnitteluprosessiin ja eri valmistustekniikoihin tutustuminen.
ÄIDINKIELI JA KIRJALLISUUS
22. WRITING FICTION - LUOVA KIRJOITTAMINEN
You can write in English or in Finnish.
Tavoite: Oppilas vapautuu kirjoittajana ja pääsee kokeilemaan monenlaisten
fiktiivisten tekstien kirjoittamista.
Sisältö: Narniaan vai Napajäätikölle? Rakkautta ensi silmäyksellä vai ruumis
kirjastossa? Kurssilla kirjoitetaan monenlaisia tekstejä. Kurssi jakautuu kahteen
osaan: Ensimmäisellä jaksolla vapautetaan sisäistä taiteilijaa monenlaisilla,
pienillä luovan kirjoittamisen harjoituksilla. Lisäksi kokeillaan erilaisia tyylejä
sekä harjoitellaan kuvausta, dialogia ja tarinan kuljettamista. Harjoitellaan
myös rakentavan palautteen antamista muiden teksteistä. Toisella jaksolla
kukin oppilas voi valita, millaisten tekstien kirjoittamiseen keskittyy. Voi tehdä
esim. kokoelman runoja, novelleja tai yhden pitkän novellin. Pitkät tekstit
kirjoitetaan tietokoneella, lyhyitä tehdään myös käsin.

23. LET’S WORK FOR COMMON GOOD – VAPAAEHTOISTYÖN
KURSSI
Do you have the will to help? Do you wish to feel useful and make a difference?
Do you want to make someone feel good and get yourself credit and positive
feedback?
Answered YES? This is the right course for you! In this course you’ll learn
different means of voluntary work and get to know voluntary work through
practical experiences.
The course contains learning to encounter other people. The practical voluntary
work can take place, for instance, in day care centers or elderly people’s
service centers or in our own school. The students may, for example, read the
daily paper to the elderly or fairy tales to the children or provide assistance in
their outdoor recreation or activities. Experiences are shared and discussed in
joint meetings.

Haluatko antaa toiselle hyvän mielen ja saada itsellesi kiitosta ja positiivista

Kurssilla opitaan erilaisia keinoja tehdä vapaaehtoistyötä ja tutustutaan
vapaaehtoistyöhön käytännön kokemusten kautta. Opettelemme toisten
ihmisten kohtaamista käytännön harjoittelun kautta. Harjoittelu voi tapahtua
mm. päiväkodeissa, vanhusten päiväkeskuksissa tai omalla koululla. Oppilas voi
esim. lukea vanhuksille päivän lehteä, lapsille satuja tai olla heille ulkoiluapuna.
Vapaaehtoistyön kokemuksista keskustellaan ja vaihdetaan ajatuksia yhteisissä
kokoontumisissa oppitunneilla.
24. KNITTING CAFÉ – NEULEKAHVILA
Come to make simple yarn work in a cozy, relaxed atmosphere with freshly
baked pastries which will be enjoyed all together after every lesson. In this
course home ec and textiles are united with the joy of giving. Students will plan
themselves what to bake, knit and where to donate the products. Welcome!
Tule tekemään yksinkertaisia lankatöitä rennolla fiiliksellä pullantuoksuisessa
keittiössä! Kurssilla yhdistyy kotitalous, tekstiilityö ja antamisen ilo. Oppilaat
suunnittelevat itse kurssin sisällön eli mitä leivotaan, mitä neulotaan ja minne
valmiit tuotteet lahjoitetaan. Jokainen oppitunti päätetään yhteiseen
herkutteluhetkeen ”kahvilatyyliin.” Tervetuloa!

You Like to Be a Peer Student?
A peer student is an ordinary student that works in order to strengthen the
school community and to help other students. Peer students are trustworthy
partners with whom to talk with about difficult personal issues.
In the peer student course students give support to each other by discussing
and organising common events. The aim in the course is to promote a feeling
of companionship among the students, make schooling more enjoyable,
increase social responsibility and secure a safe, enjoyable and supportive
school year for all.
Peer students also arrange various theme days, events and campaigns. Doing
things together is also a lot of fun and improves motivation for schoolwork.
