Never Forget the Covenant!
Everyday in their prayers, members of the Jewish community recite the Shema
Yisrael: “Listen, Israel, the Lord our God is one. You must love the Lord God
with all your heart…” Calling these words to mind in prayer focuses their
attention on their special relationship with God and reminds them that it is
expected to be manifested in specific ways of thinking and behaving.
The commandments mentioned in the gospel this weekend arise out of this
special relationship. They were seen by the Pharisees as being the practical
expression of their Jewish faith. By obeying these commandments and rules,
they believed they were living fully their identity as “God’s chosen people”.
As Judaism grew, the external expression of the commandments developed to
the point where, by the time of Jesus, the Pharisees maintained that there were
613 rules that had to be complied with as a sign that a person was being
faithful to the commandments and his or her covenant relationship with God.
However, their understanding of “neighbour“ remained restricted to other Israelites.
The gospel this weekend confirms that the Pharisees knew that Jesus was constantly challenging their
interpretation of the covenant and their understanding of who was their “neighbour”. So, they decided to test him.
They thought they would ask him to identify which of the commandments was the most important. Much depended
on Jesus’ answer, not only for those who heard him that day but for all those who would choose to follow him.
Accordingly this encounter became a highly significant moment in Jesus’ mission.
Jesus’ response to the Pharisees went directly to the heart of authentic religious faith arising out of a relationship
with God. In his reply we find the core of his teaching: love of God and love of neighbour are inseparable.
As we strive to live the implications of our Christian discipleship, like our brothers and sisters of Jewish faith we
need the constant reminder of the radical nature of God’s love and God’s sovereignty. We also know that we
cannot be authentic Christians unless we have a place in our hearts for others and that we show our love for God in
and through our love of our neighbor. For us, God and neighbour are inseparable.
Ray Chapman, SM
Parish Priest
The parish of St Patrick’s acknowledges the Cadigal tribe of the Eora people as the traditional
custodians of this place we now call Sydney.
Welcome Back: It is a pleasure to welcome Fr Neville
Byrne, SM and Br Terry Garrett, SM back to the parish
this week. Fr Byrne has been engaged in parish
ministry in the diocese of Parramatta and Br Terry
Garrett has been on sabbatical.
Book of Remembrance: As in previous years, there will
be a Book of Remembrance placed in the church during
the month of November. You are invited to write the
names of your deceased family members and friends in
the book. They will be remembered in a special way
during the Masses at St Patrick’s this month.
Children’s Week: During the coming week we are
celebrating Children’s Week. The theme for 2014 is, “Let
the children have a voice and be heard” (Article 12 of
the UN Rights of the Child). Maybe as people who
cherish children we might take the opportunity this week
to spend some quality time with our children and to
listen to some of their concerns. Every moment spent
with a child is precious!
Catholic Mission Appeal: Thank you for your generous
support of our Catholic Mission appeal last Sunday.
Your kindness will ensure that the lives of many poor
and needy people will be enriched.
Business Manager: The Marist Sisters’ Sector of
Australia is seeking a Business Manager to commence
in mid-January 2015. The role is part time, approximately
30 hours per week and located in a quiet, supportive
office environment at Hunters Hill. The individual being
sought will have initiative and good people skills, be
financially competent with a broad experience in office
administration and proficient in MYOB and Microsoft
Office software. The position covers a range of financial
functions from planning and systems review to
budgeting, financial reporting and asset management.
The Business Manager works in close collaboration with
the Sector Bursar, is accountable to her, and through
her, to the Sector Leader. Applications close on 31 st
October 2014. Prior to lodging an application, interested
candidates are asked to email Margaret Walker at
[email protected] to request a position
description.
Recitation of the Angelus: A number of people have
asked us to clarify the how the Angelus should be
recited, particularly in relation to the addition of “Glory
be to the Father…” at the conclusion. The Angelus is a
“stand alone prayer” and there is no need to add
anything after the concluding prayer which begins: “Pour
forth, we beseech you O Lord…” From now on, it would
be appreciated that the recitation of the Angelus at St
Patrick’s finish with the concluding prayer.
Faith in Action: Social Justice Expo: is your
opportunity to engage with agencies and organisations
working in justice and peace and explore ways you can
get involved. On 3rd and 4th November, guest speakers
will explore a justice topic from a Catholic perspective.
The Expo on 5th November will feature exhibitors, live
entertainment, food and competitions at the Courtyard of
the University of Notre Dame, Broadway. Mass will
follow the expo at 8.15 p.m. at St Benedict’s. More info

is event is organised by the Justice and Peace Office,

Lourdes Day Mass: The Order of Malta invites all
parishioners to Lourdes Day Mass 2014 to be
celebrated at St Mary’s Cathedral on Saturday, 29th
November at 10.00 a.m. The principal celebrant will be
Bishop Anthony Fisher, OP. A blessing of the sick will

The Bible and the Cell (Mobile) Phone
Do you ever wonder what would happen if we treated our Bible like we treat
our cell phone? What if we carried it around in our purses or pockets? What
if we flipped through it several times a day? What if it were so important to us
that we turned back to go get it if we forgot it? What if we used it, not to
receive text messages, but to receive messages from the sacred text? What
if we treated it like we couldn’t live without it? (Matthew 4:4) What if we gave
it to young people as valued gifts? What if we used it when we travelled?
What if we used it in case of emergency? What if we consulted it often to find
special guidance for each day? Have we forgotten that prayer is the greatest
wireless connection? And there are no dropped calls because "the eyes of
the Lord are over the righteous and His ears are open unto their prayers" (1
Pet. 3:12). Also the Bible never loses its charge, because it’s power does not
depend upon anything on earth. It is living and powerful, just like its Author
(Heb. 4:12). Don’t let the electronic age rob you of these wonderful spiritual
realities! Author unknown

The bread we take and eat, O
Lord,
Is your body broken and shared
with us;
Your body broken and shared with
us,
The gift of your great love.
Refrain
Our lives are in your hands,
Our lives are in your hands;
Our love for you will grow, O Lord;
Your light in us will shine.
Verse 3
Our own belief in you, O Lord,
Is only a shadow of your faith in
us,
Only a shadow of your faith in us;
Your deep and lasting faith.
Verse 4
The dreams we share today, O
Lord,
Are only a shadow of your dreams
for us;
Only a shadow of your dreams for
us;
If we but follow you.

Verse 5
The joy we share today, O Lord,
Is only a shadow of your joys for
us;

Gather Your People, 530
Refrain
Gather your people, O Lord.
Gather your people, O Lord.
One bread, one body, one spirit of
love.
Gather your people, O Lord.
1. Draw us forth to the table of life:
brothers and sisters,
each of us called to walk in your light.
2. We are parts of the body of Christ,
needing each other,
each of the gifts the Spirit provides.
3. No more harm on the mountain of
God;
swords into plow-shares.
Free us, O Lord, from hardness of
heart.
4. Wash us, Lord, in the waters of life;
waters of mercy,
waters of hope that flow from your
side.
We Walk By Faith, 447
Verse 1
We walk by faith, and not by sight;
no gracious words we hear
of him who spoke as none e’er spoke,
but we believe him near.
Verse 2
We may not touch his hands and side,
nor follow where he trod,
yet in his promise we rejoice,
and cry “My Lord and God!”
Love Is His Word, 462
1. Love is His word, Love is His way,
Feasting with all, fasting alone,
Living and dying, rising again
Love only love is His way.
Chorus
Richer than gold is the love of my Lord.
Better than splendour and wealth.
2. Love is His way, love is His mark,
Sharing His last Passover feast,
Christ at the table, host to the twelve
Love, only love, is His mark.
3. Love is his mark, love is His sign,
Bread for our strength, wine for our joy,
This is my body, this is my blood
Love, only love is His sign.
4. Love is His sign, love is His news,
Do this He said ‘lest you forget
All my deep sorrow, all my dear blood,
Love, only love, is His news.
5. Love is His news, Love is His name,
We are His own, chosen and called,
Family, brethren, cousins and kin.
Love, only love is His name.
6. Love is His name, love is His law,
Hear His command, all who are His,
Love one another, I have loved you
Love, only love, is His law.
7. Love is His law, Love is His word,
Love of the Lord, Father, and Word,
Love of the Spirit, God ever one,
Love, only love, is His word.
Verse 3
Help then, O Lord, our unbelief,
and may our faith abound
to call on you when you are near,
and seek where you are found:
Verse 4
that when our life of faith is done,
in realms of clearer light
we may behold you as you are
in full and endless sight.
