"Let us not be robbed of the joy of evangelization!"
Today throughout the universal Church we celebrate World Mission Day.
Pope Francis has written to us to help us understand what this means for each
one of us. Below are a few excerpts from his letter: If you have the
opportunity, you might wish to read it in its entirety via the Vatican website.
“Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Today vast numbers of people still do not know Jesus Christ. For this reason,
the mission ‘ad gentes’ (to all people) continues to be most urgent. All the
members of the Church are called to participate in this mission, for the Church
is missionary by her very nature: she was born “to go forth”.
World Mission Day is a privileged moment when the faithful of various
continents engage in prayer and concrete gestures of solidarity in support of
the young Churches in mission lands. It is a celebration of grace and joy: a
celebration of grace, because the Holy Spirit, sent by the Father, offers wisdom
and strength to those who are obedient to his action; a celebration of joy, because Jesus Christ, the Father’s Son,
sent to evangelize the world, supports and accompanies our missionary efforts. This joy of Jesus and missionary
disciples leads me to propose a biblical icon, which we find in the Gospel of Luke (cf. 10:21-23)…
Dear brothers and sisters, on this World Mission Day my thoughts turn to all the local Churches. Let us not be
robbed of the joy of evangelization! I invite you to immerse yourself in the joy of the Gospel and nurture a love that
can light up your vocation and your mission. I urge each of you to recall, as if you were making an interior
pilgrimage, that “first love” with which the Lord Jesus Christ warmed your heart, not for the sake of nostalgia but in
order to persevere in joy. The Lord’s disciples persevere in joy when they sense his presence, do his will and
share with others their faith, hope and evangelical charity...
World Mission Day is also an occasion to rekindle the desire and the moral obligation to take joyful part in the
mission ad gentes. A monetary contribution on the part of individuals is the sign of a self-offering, first to the Lord
and then to others; in this way a material offering can become a means for the evangelization of humanity built on
love.
Let us pray through the intercession of Mary, the model of humble and joyful evangelization, that the Church may
become a welcoming home, a mother for all peoples and the source of rebirth for our world.”
Pope Francis
The parish of St Patrick’s acknowledges the Cadigal tribe of the Eora people as the traditional
custodians of this place we now call Sydney.
World Mission Appeal: This Sunday we celebrate
World Mission Day. It is a pleasure to welcome our
guest speakers, Martin Tuelan and Clare Grantham who
will share with us their experience of mission and help
us to appreciate our vocation as disciples of Jesus who
are “on mission”.
We encourage to you to give
generously to this appeal. Funds raised through this
appeal will assist the Church’s ministry in 1,100
dioceses throughout the world.
Sparkling High Tea: Thank you to all those who
attended St Patrick’s High Tea on Saturday 11 th
October. A special thank you to Mrs Joan Shoti who
provided the wonderful food and who did so much to
make the event so successful. We also express our
gratitude to Val Fisher, the manager of our Coffee Shop,
and to all the volunteers who assisted her.
Cana Communities Appeal: It is a pleasure to have
members of the Cana Community speaking recently
about the importance of their ministry which is to provide
family-type support for people from the streets. The
Cana community is one of the largest providers of beds
in the inner city. The appeal raised over $4,759.05 in
cash. Thank you, once again, for your outstanding
generosity and concern for the poor.
Installation of Bishop Anthony Fisher, OP: The
Liturgical Reception and Mass of Installation for the
Most Reverend Anthony Fisher OP as the ninth
Archbishop of Sydney will take place at St Mary’s
Cathedral on Wednesday, 12th November 2014 at 7.30
pm. Those attending would need to be seated by
7.00pm. All are welcome.
What’s Been Happening at St Pat’s? Over the past
few months a number of major works have been
undertaken to improve our parish facilities. In the crypt,
we have put in a new hearing loop, new carpet, new
electrics and PA cabling and purchased a new lectern.
This has enabled us to also install a data projector and
automated screen. Work has also commenced on
improvements to the crypt kitchen. We are about to
make a decision on which company will be asked to
work on improving the toilet facilities. Construction is
expected to commence in November. Also, the Church,
Aquinas Academy and St Brigid's have been equipped
with new wireless microphones to allow for the change
of frequencies on 31st December due to the sale of
spectrum licences and St Brigid's will be painted in
December, along with levels 5 and 7 of the parish office
building.

Sunday, there will not be any Exposition of the Blessed
Sacrament after the 12.00 noon Mass.

on the site, and concludes with the church, where we

at close quarters. Please telephone the Coffee Shop

normally held on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month
excluding festive seasons and public holidays.
Smile: What is Celibacy? Celibacy can be a choice in
life, or a condition imposed by circumstances. While
attending a Marriage Weekend, my wife and I, listened
to the instructor declare, 'It is essential that husbands
and wives know the things that are important to each
other...” He then addressed the men, 'Can you name
and describe your wife's favourite flower?' I leaned
over, touched my wife's hand gently, and whispered,
'Self-raising, isn't it?' And thus began my life of
celibacy......
Scripture Readings for

First Reading: Isaiah 45:1. 4-6
Second Reading: First letter of St Paul
to the Thessalonians 1:1-5
Gospel: Matthew 22:15-21
The Bible and the Cell (Mobile) Phone
Do you ever wonder what would happen if we treated our Bible like we treat
our cell phone? What if we carried it around in our purses or pockets? What
if we flipped through it several times a day? What if it were so important to us
that we turned back to go get it if we forgot it? What if we used it, not to
receive text messages, but to receive messages from the sacred text? What
if we treated it like we couldn’t live without it? (Matthew 4:4) What if we gave
it to young people as valued gifts? What if we used it when we travelled?
What if we used it in case of emergency? What if we consulted it often to find
special guidance for each day? Have we forgotten that prayer is the greatest
wireless connection? And there are no dropped calls because "the eyes of
the Lord are over the righteous and His ears are open unto their prayers" (1
Pet. 3:12). Also the Bible never loses its charge, because it’s power does not
depend upon anything on earth. It is living and powerful, just like its Author
(Heb. 4:12). Don’t let the electronic age rob you of these wonderful spiritual
realities! Author unknown

How Great Thou Art, AOV 94
On Eagles Wings, 452
O Lord my God! When I in awesome wonder
Consider all the worlds thy hands have made,
I see the stars, I hear the mighty thunder,
Thy pow’r throughout the universe displayed.
Verse 1
You who dwell in the shelter of the Lord,
Who abide in His shadow for life,
Say to the Lord, "My Refuge,
My Rock in Whom I trust."
Refrain:
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee:
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee:
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Refrain
And he will raise you up on eagle's wings,
Bear you on the breath of dawn,
Make you to shine like the sun,
And hold you in the palm of His Hand.
When through the woods and forest glades I wander
and hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees;
when I look down from lofty mountain grandeur,
and hear the brook, and feel he gentle breeze;
Verse 2
The snare of the fowler will never capture you,
And famine will bring you no fear;
Under His wings your refuge,
his faithfulness your shield.
Refrain
And when I think that God his son not sparing,
Sent him to die - I scarce can take it in,
That on the cross my burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away my sin:
Verse 3
You need not fear the terror of the night,
nor the arrow that flies by day;
though thousands fall about you,
near you it shall not come.
Refrain
When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation
And take me home- what joy shall fill my heart!
Then I shall bow in humble adoration
And there proclaim, my God, how great thou art!
Verse 4
For to the angels his given a command,
To guard you in all of your ways,
Upon their hands they will bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot against a stone.
And hold you, hold you in the palm of his hand.
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
