St. Stephen Parish October 26, 2014 Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

St. Stephen Parish
October 26, 2014
Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time
When the Pharisees heard that
Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together,
and one of them, a scholar of
the law tested him by asking,
"Teacher, which commandment
in the law is the greatest?"
He said to him, "You shall love
the Lord, your God, with all your
heart, with all your soul, and
with all your mind. This is the
greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You
shall love your neighbor as
yourself. The whole law and the
prophets depend on these two
commandments."
Matthew 22:34 - 10
Our Mission Statement
We are a Catholic Community that is called by God to follow Jesus Christ. We believe that we are called
to worship God together, to lead God's people along the path of hope laid down by Jesus, to share his message through preaching, through the education and formation of our people, young and old, and through caring service and sensitive outreach to those in need

Dear Parishioners of St. Stephen;
Did you miss the Oktoberfest? You missed a good time. My most sincere thanks to
so many who made our Oktoberfest a wonderful success. Co-chairs, Helga and
Giovanna, deserve our full congratulations and thanks for a job well done. Not
many in the parish have the commitment and care to pull off such a huge endeavor.
The food, the entertainment, the company: perfection! Many others helped and
their names will be forthcoming. They deserve our thanks. I particularly thank all
the “behind-the-scenes” folks who worked tirelessly to provide a splendid evening.

+++++++++++
By now you have probably heard of the just-concluded Church meeting held at the
Vatican. Several bishops and lay folk met in an “extraordinary” Synod to prepare for the more
“ordinary” Synod on Family Life to be held next year. The press has been fascinated because it appeared that our Holy Father was opening the door to a more pastoral approach to those who feel excluded from communion because of a second marriage, or those living together without benefit of
marriage, or to those gay and lesbian Catholics traditionally feeling unwelcomed. He insisted all
synod participants speak freely and honestly without fear of criticism. While the meetings covered a
broader range of subjects and concerns, it was these “hot button” issues that captured the media’s
imagination.
The final document (approved by a majority of 158 of the 174 voting members) was a 62-paragraph
document which will simply lay the working foundation for the major Synod next year. Each Conference of Bishops will debate and discuss this document during this coming year as preparation for the
Synod.
At the conclusion of this preliminary “extraordinary” Synod, the Pope gave a ten-minute address
which received a five-minute standing ovation from the floor. In this address he identified the extreme dangers of both the right and the left and appealed for trust in the Holy Spirit who guides our
unity:
Many commentators, or people who talk, have imagined that they see a disputatious Church where
one part is against the other, doubting even the Holy Spirit, the true promoter and guarantor of the
unity and harmony of the church--the Holy Spirit who throughout history has always guided the bargue, through her Ministers, even when the sea was rough, and choppy, and the ministers unfaithful
and sinful.
Next week I’ll tell you more about what the Pope said to warn those on both sides of the debate. We
continue our prayer for the Spirit’s guidance of our church leadership.
Wishing you and your family God’s continued blessings, I am sincerely yours in Christ,
your pastor

Fr. Len Update
Fr. Len continues to recuperate in the ICU section of the hospital. His surgery was successful but the
nurses are keeping a close eye on him. Of course, he is keeping a close eye on them as well! My
visit on Monday witnessed him telling jokes to the nurses. That’s a sign he is improving day by day. I
told him we will continue to pray for him.

If you know of certain times and dates that you do
not want to be scheduled during those months, please

THE MINISTRY OF USHERS
The usher is a person chosen to reflect the warmth
and welcome of Christ himself. The usher's role is to
offer a friendly, welcoming presence to those coming to worship; to provide leadership during emergencies; and to perform such tasks as taking up the
collection, inviting people to present the gifts, assisting parishioners during Communion, disseminating
the church bulletin and participating in cleaning the
church after completion of the Mass.
We need reliable, conscientious, energetic, caring,
and dedicated people (women, men, families) to become ushers. Anyone who is a "people person" may
be an usher. If you would like to become an usher,
please contact Janelle O’Malley at the parish office
or at [email protected] - or talk with one of our
ushers after Mass!

the November General Election Ballot. The statement represents the unanimous endorsement of the
state’s Catholic bishops and will be distributed to 10

Father Warren received the following letter;
Archbishop Cordileone invites you to join
him at the 11th annual Walk for Life
We would like to share with you an invitation
from Archbishop Cordileone to join him, and his
brother bishops, in attending the Walk for Life West
Coast on January 24, 2015. There will be a Mass at
9:30 AM at San Francisco’s Cathedral of Saint Mary
of the Assumption prior to the Walk for Life. His
Excellency’s letter of invitation to join him can be
found here.
We gratefully join the Archbishop in inviting you
and your parish to join us at the Walk for Life West
Coast, where tens of thousands of Catholics and
non-Catholics alike share the gospel of life which is
the gospel of Christ. This year will mark the 11th
annual Walk for Life West Coast.
For the first time Walk for Life is sponsoring a
"Design-a-Shirt" contest for youth in two age groups
- high school and college. Each group will have a 1st
prize winner of $500, a 2nd prize winner of $350
and a third prize winner of $150. We encourage all
youth of the archdiocese (and beyond) to participate
in this exciting contest.
We ask that you do what you can in helping to promote the Walk and the contest among your parish
and surrounding community. As we get closer to
January 24th, we will be sending out packets with
flyers and suggested bulletin announcements. If
there is any way we can help make your participation at the Walk for Life
easier, please let us know. We are happy to help any
way we can. To learn more, visit our website. To

The Month of November:
We Remember Those
Who Have Gone
Before Us
November is traditionally the
month when Catholics remember those who have died.
We invite you to bring photos of your deceased
loved ones to church. These photos will be arranged around the Paschal Candle and Baptismal
Font during the month of November.
During the remaining days of October, you may
begin to bring your photos and place them on
the tables in the vestibule. These will be arranged near the font by the Feasts of Saints. After November 1st, you may add photographs to
the arrangement around the font.
The photographs may be framed, or unframed.
Please place your name and phone number on
the back of each photo.
You are also invited to write the names of your
loved ones in the Book of Remembrance. During the month of November, it will be located
near the font.
At the 9:30 Mass on November 2nd, we will remember those who have died and/or who have
been buried from St. Stephen’s during the past
year. The names of these deceased will be
placed on banners throughout the church during
the month of November.
