The purpose of this conference is to provide an engaging and collaborative learning
forum among social franchise implementers, donors, researchers, and policymakers
to grow the community of practice and to better achieve the five goals of social
franchising: cost-effectiveness, equity, health impact, increased use, and quality.
Welcome to the Second Global Conference
on Social Franchising for Health.
Social franchise programs around the world stand out
from other health programs through their emphasis on
quality, technical excellence, and measurement. This is
highlighted in this year’s conference with the theme of
metrics, which is woven through many of the sessions
and presentations. The Social Franchise Metrics Working
Group is an initiative encompassing more than a dozen
agencies, working to develop, share, and promote
robust measures for service quality, equity, health impact,
cost-effectiveness, and increased use in the hopes of
strengthening program management. I encourage you
to look at their work.
We convene in Cebu at a time when Social Franchising
has become the fastest growing, and perhaps the most
widely applied, method to engage the private sector
for public health benefit. That growth in adoption and
popularity is a reflection of the skills and expertise
brought to bear on health challenges and program
management by each of you.
For the past six years, the Global Health Group at
the University of California, San Francisco has been
surveying clinical social franchising programs around the
world on their scale, where and how they work, what
services they specialize in, who they serve, and the size
of their health impact. This year we counted over 90
social franchise programs in operation in more than 40
countries. Along with our sponsoring partners, the
Global Health Group is dedicated to improving health
and reducing the burden of disease in the world’s most
vulnerable populations. We see social franchising as an
important method to advance that goal. Our hope is
that this conference will support and grow the work led
through social franchising, helping franchise managers
learn from, and teach, one another.
I extend a warm welcome to each of you, and a sincere
thank you for joining us here. We are grateful for your
participation, and look forward to learning with you and
from you over the coming days.
