JCC Executive Director
If you’ve visited the JCC during the past month or so
you’ve probably noticed some changes going on. We are excited
about the major renovation projects that are already underway.
We’ve freshened up the second floor classrooms with new, bright
paint, and stripped and cleaned the floors, scrubbed all the toys
and cubbies. Downstairs our Gym is receiving a major facelift with
a new wood floor, paint and a thorough cleaning throughout the
room.
The pool and locker rooms are getting the most attention. In
the locker rooms you’ll see just about a total renovation: new paint,
tile, lockers, plumbing with new toilets, showers, sinks, vanities and
mirrors. Our pool room is receiving a major facelift, as well:
resurfacing of the pool interior, better drainage, new decking, tile, walls, windows and doors.
How are we able to do all this? With smart management by the Board of Directors,
visionary planning and a generous gift from the Goldfarb and Tanzman Foundations. We
are exceedingly grateful to Jeffries Shein, David Koplowitz, Roy Tanzman and Barbara
Sousa for their on-going support of the mission and work of our JCC, as well as the
continued annual support from Jewish Federation of Greater Middlesex County to help fund
our Senior Adult and Jewish Family programs.
We’ve also received a Federal Homeland Security Grant to upgrade our building
security. You’ll see these upgrades occur over the next two years.
We appreciate your patience and understanding that major parts of our facility are
going to remain closed while this work is in progress, however, we are confident that you will
love our upgraded facility.
Photo updates are posted on both our website (www.jccmc.org) and Facebook page
JCC of Middlesex County-- Please check back and share our excitement, as the work
progresses.
Thank you, in advance, for your continued support and loyalty! It’s a very exciting time
at our JCC and if you are not already a member of our JCC “family” , please consider joining
now.

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 2014 at 10:00 AM— Midnight in Europe by Alan Furst
Paris, 1938. As the shadow of war darkens Europe, democratic forces on the
Continent struggle against fascism and communism, while in Spain the war has
already begun. Alan Furst, whom Vince Flynn has called “the most talented espionage
novelist of our generation,” now gives us a taut, suspenseful, romantic, and richly
rendered novel of spies and secret operatives in Paris and New York, in Warsaw and
Odessa, on the eve of World War II.
Cristián Ferrar, a brilliant and handsome Spanish émigré, is a lawyer in the Paris office
of a prestigious international law firm. Ferrar is approached by the embassy of the
Spanish Republic and asked to help a clandestine agency trying desperately to supply
weapons to the Republic’s beleaguered army—an effort that puts his life at risk in the
battle against fascism.
Joining Ferrar in this mission is a group of unlikely men and women: idealists and gangsters, arms traders and
aristocrats and spies. From shady Paris nightclubs to white-shoe New York law firms, from brothels in Istanbul to
the dockyards of Poland, Ferrar and his allies battle the secret agents of Hitler and Franco.
TUESDAY, DECEMBER 2, 2014 at 10:00 AM— The Heist by Daniel Silva
A fallen spy
A missing masterpiece
A daring mission
The Heist
Legendary spy and art restorer Gabriel Allon is in Venice repairing an altarpiece by
Veronese when he receives an urgent summons from the Italian police. The eccentric
London art dealer Julian Isherwood has stumbled upon a chilling murder scene in Lake
Como, and is being held as a suspect. To save his friend, Gabriel must track down the
real killers and then perform one simple task: find the most famous missing painting in
the world.
Sometimes the best way to find a stolen masterpiece is to steal another one. . . .
A Musical Harvest
Melodies for Autumn by Amy Herbitter
Composers through the ages
have tried to capture the feeling of
the fall months. It’s a period of
familiar tunes, like “Harvest Moon,”
and “School Days,” but it’s also
honored by such greats as Antonio
Vivaldi, who devoted an entire
concerto from “The Four Seasons”
to Autumn. As the weather cools
and leaves change color, we’ll
explore classical and popular works
highlighting this special time of
year, with a discussion of the composers and their music.
Drawing on her experience as a music educator and Early Music
specialist, Amy will also include a selection of harvest folk tunes from the
Baroque era, all played on recorders and acoustic guitars. Join us for a wideranging program celebrating the beauty of the season!

FROM OUR PAST
with Judy Rosenthal
Long before cell phones, email, text
messages, Facebook, and Skype, picture postcards
were all the rage. First issued around 1870 in Europe and
the United States, they were not only a popular means of
inexpensive communication but also collected and traded.
Postcards with Jewish themes and images were printed in
many countries, including the U.S., Germany and Poland
and often featured holiday greetings written in Yiddish and
English. They covered a wide range of Jewish topics,
from Jewish festivals, shops, synagogues, cemeteries and
shtetl life to Yiddish writers, views of Palestine, actors and
actresses of the Yiddish Theatre and much more.
You are invited to learn about Judy’s Jewish postcard collection and take a close look
via PowerPoint presentation. By means of these vintage postcards, which date back to the
early 1900s, you’ll find out about the history of postcards and postcards as collectibles, while
taking a fascinating journey into our Jewish past.

Poster Child for the Difficulty of Playing with the Big Boys
Lee Krasner was the
only female American painter
belonging to the first
generation of artists in the
New York School. Like Frida
Kahlo, she was attracted to
and married another artist.
And therein lay the complex
paradox of her life and career.
How could a woman be
simply judged as an artist when she was a famous artist’s wife and
practiced an artistic style that quickly became defined as inherently
masculine?

PRESENTER: MICHAEL BASILE Ph.D.
The conflict between
fathers and daughters occupies
center stage in many of
Shakespeare’s plays, comedies,
tragedies, and romances alike.
Astonishingly, Shakespeare
consistently favors his young
women—Juliet, Hermia,
Desdemona, Cordelia, and
Perdita—despite the prevailing
patriarchy of his society. This
presentation examines the
biographical, cultural, and theatrical reasons behind this predilection.
Dr. Michael Basile is a Professor of English at New Jersey City University
as well as a widely published author, lecturer and Shakespearean actor.
This program is funded by the Horizons Speakers Bureau of the New Jersey
Council for the Humanities, a state partner of the National Endowment for
the Humanities.

and Jewish Identity
Sunday, December 7, 2014
Brunch at 10:00 AM ; Speaker at 10:45 AM
The sixties weren't just about hippies and Woodstock. David E. Kaufman
points to four Jewish celebrities as examples of a turning point in Jewish
identity in Jewhooing the Sixties: American Celebrity and Jewish Identity - Sandy Koufax, Lenny Bruce, Bob Dylan, and Barbra Streisand. Kaufman
investigates these celebrities' rise to fame, the specific brand of Jewishness
each one represented, and how their fans and the public at large perceived
their ethnic identity as Jews. Kaufman is an associate professor of religion and
the Florence and Robert Kaufman Chair in Jewish Studies at Hofstra University.

Judaism and Israel
PRESENTER: DR. BARBARA ROSOFF
Einstein’s name is synonymous with the word “genius”.
He is well-known for having received a Nobel Prize in physics,
being a scientist, physicist, a humanitarian, a patent examiner
and a world statesman. He became a world celebrity overnight
when his theory of relativity changed our conception of the
universe. But how many people know of his strong connection
with Zionism and the State of Israel or the fact that when Chaim
Weitzman, the first president of Israel died, Einstein was offered the chance to become
president by Israel’s ambassador to Washington, Abba Eban with the caveat that he
leave Princeton and move to Israel? And how many people know of his negative
relationship with his German homeland, about renouncing his German citizenship two
times and breaking off his friendships with colleagues who supported anti-Semitism
and not allowing his books to be sold in Germany or his name to be placed on the rolls
of any German scientific society?
Dr. Rosoff is currently on the faculty at the McCauley Institute for Lifelong Learning at
Georgian Court University, Lakewood and is a curriculum writer and teacher at the
Rabbi Jack M. Rosoff Hebrew High School, Congregation B’nai Israel, Rumson. She
has published in secular and Judaic journals, lectured on subjects ranging from
education and psychology to secular and Judaic feminism. She is currently focusing
on “Albert Einstein: His Life and Universe”. She received her doctorate at Rutgers
University.

There will never be another year like 1945.
Italy's Benito Mussolini was killed. Germany's Adolph Hitler committed suicide.
America's Franklin Delano Roosevelt died at the beginning of his fourth term
and a virtually unknown senator took over the heavy responsibilities of the
presidency - Harry Truman from Missouri. World War II ended with victory in
Europe in May, and after the first atom bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and
Nagasaki, Japan, in August, the Emperor, even against the wishes of some of
his warlords, ordered them to surrender, ending World War II.
And for those baseball fans, the Chicago Cubs won the pennant and played in
the World Series. This has never happened since.
Come and join us for the fun of reliving those days almost 70 years ago
after which the world was never the same again.

The Jews of
Khazaria recounts the
eventful history of the
Turkic kingdom of
Khazaria, which was
located in eastern Europe
and flourished as an
independent state from
about 650 to 1016. As a
major world power,
Khazaria enjoyed
diplomatic and trade
relations with many
peoples and nations
(including the Byzantines,
Alans, Magyars and Slavs) and changed the course of medieval
history in many ways.
In the 9th century the Khazarian royalty and nobility as well as a
significant portion of the Khazarian and Turkic population embraced
the Jewish religion. After their conversion, the Khazars were ruled by
a succession of Jewish kings and began to adopt the hallmarks of
Jewish civilization, including the Torah and Talmuds, the Hebrew
script, and the observance of Jewish holidays.

of Pernambuco from the Netherlands, and the Sephardi Jews
there promptly fled. Most went to Amsterdam, but twentythree headed for New Amsterdam instead.
They were greeted by some Ashkenazim who had
preceded them by just a few weeks. Governor Peter
Stuyvesant was unwilling to accept these newcomers
and sought to expel them or at least impose numerous restrictions and taxes on his
Jewish subjects. By their mere seemingly insignificant presence, they and those Jews
who would follow them would both change and be changed by America vastness,
human diversity, political & social inconsistency and experiment in democracy.

High-Heeled Shoe
JOIN US ON A TRIP TO
THE BROOKLYN MUSEUM
For a docent-guided tour of this
Fabulous NEW Exhibit
Killer Heels explores fashion’s most provocative accessory. From the high
platform chopines of sixteenth-century Italy to the glamorous stilettos on today’s
runways and red carpets, the exhibition looks at the high-heeled shoe’s rich and
varied history and its enduring place in our popular imagination.
As fashion statement, fetish object, instrument of power, and outlet of artistic
expression for both the designer and the wearer, throughout the ages the highheeled shoe has gone through many shifts in style and symbolism. Deadly sharp
stilettos, architecturally inspired wedges and platforms, and a number of artfully
crafted shoes that defy categorization are featured among the more than 160
historical and contemporary heels on exhibit.
Presented alongside the objects in the exhibition are six specially
commissioned short films inspired by high heels.
After the Guided Tour you’ll be
able to have lunch on your own in either of the Museum’s two eateries, the Counter
Café or Saul and have ample time to explore this great museum on your own.
