Vacancy Announcement Appalachia HIDTA LOCATION: LONDON, KENTUCKY POSITION: PREVENTION / EDUCATION COORDINATOR SALARY: NEGOTIABLE CLOSING DATE: NOVEMBER 30, 2014 High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas (HIDTA) are regions designated by the Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) that have critical drug-trafficking problems that adversely impact the United States. The HIDTA program provides assistance to federal, state, and local agencies in accordance with the goals and objectives contained in the President’s National Drug Control Strategy. The mission of the HIDTA program is to enhance and facilitate the coordination of America’s drug control efforts among federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies in order to eliminate or reduce drug-trafficking. The Appalachia High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (AHIDTA) was designed in 1998 and includes initiatives in the States of Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. AHIDTA has recently initiated drug prevention and education, as part of our overall strategy, to combat the use and abuse of both legal (prescription drugs) and illegal street drugs that are so prevalent in our communities. The above position is being offered to qualified individuals who have a sincere interest and passion in reducing the demand for drugs in our AHIDTA communities. DUTIES WILL INCLUDE: • • • • Initiate and enhance drug demand reduction, prevention and education programs across the AHIDTA region by developing strategic alliances with community coalitions, as well as federal, state and local governments in their efforts to reduce the demand for drugs. Work hand in hand with the AHIDTA initiatives to help determine drug demand reduction, prevention and education needs in the AHIDTA communities. Review the national, regional and local drug threat and help develop initiatives related to drug demand reduction that addresses those drug threats. Write and develop work plans defining new initiatives and projects related to drug demand reduction, prevention and education. The applicant should be familiar with current drug prevention efforts, particularly ongoing in the AHIDTA area, knowledgeable of source materials for prevention information, and able to balance multiple projects with multiple timetables. The applicant must also be self-motivated and innovative in developing new and creative ideas to reach both adult and youth audiences in prevention and demand reduction efforts. Strong writing, verbal communication, and research skills are essential. Experience in working with community anti-drug coalitions, supporting cooperative efforts between non-profit, public, and private sector organizations, or participating in advocacy organizations is preferred. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: • Bachelor’s degree • Three years of experience in drug abuse prevention, education and demand reduction • The ability to communicate effectively in written and verbal form • Basic computer skills • The ability to plan, write and prepare extensive reports and documents • The ability to successfully obtain a Secret security clearance APPOINTMENT: This position is federally funded on an annual basis and is dependent on the continuation of a grant from ONDCP. The person selected will not be considered a Federal employee, or employee of any of the participating State or local law enforcement agency. The Prevention / Education Specialist reports to the AHIDTA Director and the AHIDTA Executive Board and serves at the pleasure of the Board.
