Clocks: Remember to move your clocks back one hour next Saturday, November 1st before you go to bed. We don’t want you to be late for Mass. Sympathy: We offer our sympathy and prayers of support to the family of Salvador Lara. We pray for Susan Lara his wife and their children Anthony and Brittney. Salvador was a First Sergeant with the United States Army and was stationed here at Fort Campbell. Salvador was born in Guadalajara, Mexico where his mother, Esperanza Lara, still lives today along with his brother and five sisters. Many people here in Hopkinsville may also know him as Coach Sal as he coached soccer at several of the high schools and touched many young people’s lives. Salvador’s visitation and funeral Mass was here at Saints Peter and Paul on Tuesday with full military rites. He was buried at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery West. So let us keep the Lara family in our prayers and may we as a church unite ourselves in prayer for Salvador as we pray “May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.” Bereavement Meals: We give thanks to those parish families who provided a dish for the bereavement meal. May you know how this meal touches the family for it gives them an opportunity to gather as family and tell stories and share with one another. We also give thanks to Kathy Buehrle and all those who helped serve and cleanup after the meal. May you be rewarded greatly. Congratulations: We congratulate Jordan Shouse and John Lewis who were united in the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony here at Saints Peter and Paul on Saturday, October 18th. May God truly bless this young couple as they live out their vows. Parish Pictorial Directory: Sign-ups for our upcoming Parish Pictorial Directory went very well last weekend. We remember in order to find strength for our continuing journey. We remember in order to allow God to heal us of our grief for those whom we miss here on earth. The Book of Life in which we write names of our loved ones reminds us to pray for them. During the month of November, the Book of Life will be placed in the Church here at Saints Peter and Paul. Please feel free to enter the names of those who have died that you would like to have remembered in prayer. 4 SS PETER & PAUL CATHOLIC CHURCH, HOPKINSVILLE, KY PARISH NEWS PARISH NEWS All Saints Day – November 1st (Friday) – All of us are called to be holy. In some way, each of us are called to live out the paschal mystery by our sometimes very ordinary lives. The feast we celebrate on November 1, All Saints Day, remembers not just the saints who have been canonized by the church, but the just of every race and nation: All those who reign in the glory of the kingdom of heaven. It is a day to remember in faith the promise made by God to our parents and grandparents and to all who have gone before us. For many of us, it is largely through their prayer and example that we live the life of faith today. The long list of those “saints” have common last names like Smith and Jones, names like ours. Perhaps the reminder is simply this: We, too, belong to the family of God, the family of the saints. This year with All Saints Day falling on a Saturday, the Holy Day of Obligation has been suspended. Please know that it is a Holy Day but the obligation has been removed. We hope you can come to Mass and celebrate All Saints Day here at Saints Peter and Paul. Mass will be celebrated as follows: Friday, October 31st Vigil Mass at 5:30 p.m. in Spanish Saturday, November 1st at 8:00 a.m. and 12:00-Noon in English. Mission Appeal 2014: The Propagation of the faith office of our Diocese has invited the Diocese of Kumbakonam, India to speak to us about their missionary activities and challenges. Accordingly, Fr. M. S. Selva Raj will be speaking to us during all the Masses next weekend, November 1st and 2nd. This Diocese has an area of 7,823 square km and is situated in Tamil Nadu, South India with a Catholic population of 213,00 which is just 6% of the total population. It is served by 182 diocesan and 45 religious priests, 501 nuns and 17 trained lay catechists. The Kumbakonam diocese celebrated the centenary of its inception in 1999 by setting certain concrete and meaningful goals for a New Evangelization in the III millennium, like: 1. Construction of 20 more new parishes, each with a new church and rectory. At present, there are 89 parishes and 641 missions-stations. Many of these are so large that they have to be made independent parishes with a resident priest. But the people are quite unable to support the church, for such pressing pastoral projects. 2. Construction of convents for those parishes which do not have one. Most of the diocesan schools are entrusted to nuns. Now there are 501 nuns in charge of catechetical, educational, medical and social ministries throughout this rural diocese, thus educating the children in the Catholic faith and helping the people, particularly the poor, for their integral development. 3. Since education is a main means of evangelizations here, the diocese has to provide buildings and infrastructure to our schools in remote villages while the government would pay our teachers. 4. Recruiting more young men in the seminary, since the rural diocese abounds in vocations to priesthood and religious life and sending a few as missionaries to where they are most needed. 5. Education of 2,000 very poor or orphan children from remote villages every year by providing them with free board and lodging. Please know at the Saturday, 5:00 p.m. Vigil Mass (November 1st) we will have the “Calling of the Names” of those who have died from Saints Peter and Paul Parish in the last year. After all names have been called from the parish, parishioners are invited to come forth and light a candle for their deceased loved ones. At the end of the service, all may take these candles home and continue to light them and pray for their loved ones during the month of November. The diocese is trying to materialize these missionary goals, depending on the availability of funds. Every year, an average of 50 young men and women go out of this diocese to other missions throughout India and other parts of the word to serve God and his people as missionaries. The mission and spiritual prospects of Kumbakonam diocese are bright but its needs are pressing. Sixty percent of its Catholics are depressingly poor. Therefore, your fervent prayers and generous help are earnestly requested for building the KINGDOM OF GOD, in and through the diocese of Kumbakonam, India. • OCTOBER 26, 2014 • 5 THIS WEEK IN OUR PARISH OCTOBER 27-NOVEMBER 2 Mon: Catholic Divorce Guide-5:30 pm Tues: Hispanic Ministry-5:00 pm, HFR Wed: Rosary Makers, 8:45 am-HFR Pictorial Directory Appointments 2-9pm Parish Choirs, Children 4 pm/Adults 6:30 pm HS/MS Youth-5:30 pm Thur: Pictorial Directory Appointments 2-9pm Guadalupe Comm., 6:30 pm-HFR RCIA, 7pm-Church Fri: MOMS Group-9:30 am Sat: SSPP Christmas Bazaar, 8:30 am-3pm-Gym Sun: Mary: A Biblical Walk-9am, Gym Readings for the Week of October 26, 2014 Sunday: Ex 22:20-26/1 Thes 1:5c-10/Mt 22:34-40 Monday: Eph 4:32--5:8/Lk 13:10-17 Tuesday: Eph 2:19-22/Lk 6:12-16 Wednesday: Eph 6:1-9/Lk 13:22-30 Thursday: Eph 6:10-20/Lk 13:31-35 Friday: Phil 1:1-11/Lk 14:1-6 Saturday: Rv 7:2-4, 9-14/1 Jn 3:1-3/Mt 5:1-12a Next Sunday: Wis 3:1-9/Rom 5:5-11 or Rom 6:3-9/ Jn 6:37-40 ©Liturgical Publications Inc Silver Steaks: On Tuesday, October 28th, the Silver Streaks will go to Pennyrile State Park. OCTOBER 26, 2014 • THE THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Pastor’s Greeting: The Truth of Marriage Lived and Taught with Love The 2014 Extraordinary Synod of Bishops has ended and a document of its work is being prepared for release to the Church and to the world. Perhaps by design, Pope Francis has stirred up a storm by allowing fundamental questions to be raised about the Gospel, marriage, family, and the sacramental life in the Church. From Pope Paul VI to Pope Francis, the successor of St. Peter has been calling for a new evangelization, a new carrying of the Gospel into the world. But the world is rapidly falling away from most things Christian, especially falling away from the Gospel and Catholic doctrine on the Sacrament of Marriage and family life. In short order, the very definition of marriage as Christians have claimed it, will be thrown away by the laws of our land. The Church will not be allowed and tolerated to keep its doctrinal and ministerial stance on marriage unmolested. Many other churches of Protestant heritage have already accepted the cultural changes. Many with us hold firm, at least on the definition of marriage. The indissolubility of marriage was given up by most non-Catholic churches a long time ago. The synodal process in the Catholic Church between now and October 2015 will make us Catholics stand up and be counted. The teaching of the Church is very plainly presented in the Catechism of the Catholic Church and amply explained in the writings of Saint John Paul II. Diminishment or abandoning of these doctrines would be a betrayal and a denial of the Gospel and of our Faith. We can always and faithfully present them more lovingly, patiently, and clearly. This is what I see as the objective of the Synod. The timing and methods of the Synod, possibly intended by Pope Francis, will have the effect of sorting out within the Church the cultural currents which are contrary to the Gospel and to the Catholic Faith. There are certainly those within the Church who would have the Church conform to the secular trends of our times. How many presume to think that it is a matter of justice for the Church to accept same-sex “unions” within the definition of marriage? How many would surrender that hard doctrine of the indissolubility of marriage for a Catholic divorce? How many see no connection between fidelity to the marriage bond and fidelity to Eucharistic Communion? Before the next Synod of October 2015, the positions of many members within the Church will become much clearer. We are facing a test of our fidelity, of our charity, and of our patience. If a Catholic has not taken the opportunity to be informed by personal study and prayer before now, I recommend a crash course so as to avoid being swept away by the tides of controversy. The world itself is almost a perfect storm of chaos as far as values are concerned. The barque of Peter is a weatherly vessel, but the Faith, Hope, and Love revealed in Jesus Christ are the only harbor to which it may safely sail. At base, for now and for the next year, the teaching of Jesus himself, is what the Church must reaffirm, for that is the only Gospel which we will ever have to live and to proclaim to the world. Here it is: Some Pharisees approached Jesus, and tested him, saying, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any cause whatever?” He said in reply, “Have you not read that from the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and 7 female’ and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, no human being must separate.” They said to him, “Then why did Moses command that the man give the woman a bill of divorce and dismiss her?” He said to them, “Because of the hardness of your hearts Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. I say to you, whoever divorces his wife (unless the marriage is unlawful) and marries another commits adultery.” [Matthew 19.3-9] Is Jesus less compassionate than Moses? Is the hardness of the human heart more durable than the Cross of Christ? Might not a more enlightened time separate male and female for the union of male and male or female and female? Perhaps the Light “which the darkness cannot overcome” should just be set aside for the light of modern times? Does Jesus despite his own accusation of the Pharisees, “lay up heavy burdens on the shoulders of others without lifting a finger to help them”? Should the Church be faithful to the very text of the Gospel of Jesus Christ or is that text to be judged a relic of an outdated past and set aside? This is what I believe. Now, and on the other side of October 2015, the Catholic Church will stay true to Jesus Christ and to the Apostolic Tradition even though all the world fall away. I hope that this synodal movement will stir up the flame of faith for the Gospel in the Church, a Gospel to be proclaimed vigorously, with a patient, abiding love. Within the Church and the world Marriage and family life are in sore need of reform and renewal. I dread but suspect that by our holding true with a new vigor, the Church in this country and in many others will be scorned and persecuted, even as it was in the Greco-Roman world (a world very debased morally and with little value for human life). There is some chance that all this will transpire against a background of global chaos, given terroristic violence with economic and bio-medical upheaval. The peace which Jesus Christ gives suggests these next two scriptures for our prayer and reflection. The first is from Luke 22.31-32— Jesus, about to conclude the Last Supper, says to Simon Peter: “Simon, Simon, behold Satan has demanded to sift all of you like wheat, but I have prayed that your own faith may not fail; and once you have turned back, you must strengthen your brothers.” And, again, toward the end of the Last Supper, but recounted here by John 16.32-33— Jesus tells the Eleven Apostles: “Behold the hour is coming and has arrived when each of you will be scattered to his own home and you will leave me alone. But I am not alone, because the Father is with me. I have told you this so that you might have peace in me. In the world you will have trouble, but take courage, I have conquered the world.” Really, we have been here before and the Good Shepherd has guided us surely through it. The certain thing is that Christ and the Holy Spirit will be faithful to us. That is all we need to remain faithful ourselves. Fr. Richard
