Whole School Presentation Night
Year 12s
We are into the final weeks of the school
year for our Year 12s. I am impressed
with the attitude and efforts of many of
our senior students in so many areas of
school life.
Last week I was privileged to be invited along to the
Moderation Dinner for the Year 12 Food & Hospitality
class. Several family members and teaching staff were in
attendance at the function room of the Ceduna Foreshore
Hotel where the students prepared, cooked and served
their menu.
The assessment criteria for the the Group Assessment was
as follows:
• all planning, practicing, preparation etc. needed
to be carried out as a group.
• Students needed to choose a menu that they
believed showcased the best produce that the
Eyre Peninsula and in particular Ceduna has to
offer
• There needed to be four courses (starters, entree,
main, dessert) with two options for each course
• The students needed to use commercial
equipment/facilities, therefore it was carried out
at the hotel in the function kitchen.
The result was that we were all treated to a magnificent
presentation of oysters, prawns and squid paella, scotch
fillet steak, battered fish, chocolate mouse and Pavlova.

YEAR 12 FAREWELL ASSEMBLY
This will be held on Wednesday 29th of
October in the school gym at approximately
9am. All parents and family members of
year 12 students are invited to attend.
Reminder CAS is a ‘NUT AWARE’ site. We ask that
no Nut Products be brought on site. We have
students who are highly allergic to nuts and can
suffer an anaphylactic reaction.
Next Wednesday 29 October we will have a special
Farewell R-12 Assembly in the school gym at 9.00am. We
invite all Year 12 Parents and Friends to attend.
Quality Assurance Parent Survey
To support our Annual Report data we will be soon
sending home surveys by email to a randomly selected
number of our parents inviting them to be part of the
DECD Quality Assurance process for our site. These parents
will also be representative of all year levels across the
school.
Questions relate to all facets of the school and the
feedback will assist the school in providing a better
educational service to our community.
Also an equally random selection of students will be
selected to complete the Student version but they will
complete them at a set time here at school. Staff will also
have an opportunity to complete one as well.
If you are randomly chosen to participate then you
should be receiving a email and the survey within the
next week or so.

Living in Australia we need to take serious precautions
about the dangers of Ultra Violet (UV) radiation. Of
course it is important to take a balanced approach to
help maintain healthy vitamin D levels while minimizing
your risk of skin cancer by using sensible sun protection.
Wearing of hats whilst out of doors can be a contentious
issue for socially conscious adolescents and can be a
bugbear for staff to be always reminding students to
wear their hat. We try to provide programmes in relation
to being safe in the sun every year. However if Sunsmart
behavior is not being modeled in the community and by
their parents then it is very difficult to impress on them
the need to do so.
Unfortunately Skin Cancer kills nearly 1,900 Australians
each year which is more than the national road toll. Two
in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by
the age of 70. Everyone in the community must know
someone who has been seriously affected by skin cancer.
They are most likely to be those with large scars on their
nose, face, back, arm or hand where cancerous lesions
have been removed.
The greatest danger from overexposure is from
September to April when the UV level is at its highest.
We ask all parents and caregivers to support the school’s
No Hat No Play policy by having your child wear a hat
and sunblock each day at school.
As many of you should know the SUNSMART steps are:

Slip on sun-protective clothing.
Slop on SPF30 or higher broad spectrum, water
resistant sunscreen 20 minutes before going
outdoors and re-apply every two hours
afterwards.
Slap on a broad-brimmed hat that protects your
face, head, neck and ears.
Junior School’s Report
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
Welcome to Term 4. This is a 9 week
term with many major events eg
swimming lessons, swimming carnival,
concert, reports – so it will go very quickly. In fact, the
whole year seems to have flashed by. Thank you for your
support of Loud Shirt Day last Friday. Students and Staff
enjoyed wearing “loud” shirts to support deaf children.
The funds raised help deaf children obtain better
education and employment choices, social integration with
the hearing world and the chance to contribute to their
community. And, it’s a good excuse to get out of school
uniform and wear bright clothes to raise money for a good
cause. $162 was raised.
A great effort from a generous community.
UNICEF Young Ambassadors

This year is the 25 anniversary of the Conventions of the
Rights of the Child. To celebrate, UNICEF is embarking on a
nationwide project to listen, learn and find out what
matters most to children. We are very lucky to have a
UNICEF Young Ambassador in our school – Brianna
Partington. This term Brianna will be running workshops
with Yr 5 Collins and Yr 2 Shakes. The feedback from these
workshops will go to the Committee of the Rights of the
Child. Isn’t it exciting that our children’s voice will
contribute to Australia’s feedback to this Committee.
Notes will be sent home to inform parents, and to obtain
permission to share photos/videos of your child on the
UNICEF website. Next year Brianna will be working with
SRC students in advocating for the Rights of the Child. We
look forward to her input into the Junior School’s Civics
and Citizenship programme.

End of Year Concert-Thursday 4 December
Only seven weeks to our concert!! This year our theme
is “Country and Western” and we would like families to
get into the spirit of things and come dressed in Country
and Western and join in the “foot tapping, hand
clapping………………” All you need is a pair of jeans, boots
or sneakers, an akubra or cap - and maybe an RM
Williams belt buckle?? Or alternatively your work
clothes!
Some other dates for this term:
• Swimming lessons start Monday 3 November
and finish on Friday 21 November. Your child’s
teacher will let you know which week their class
is having lessons.
• Transition for Reception 2015 starts Thursday

FAR WEST LITTLE ATHLETICS
Far West Little Athletics Centre will commence its

2014/2015 season 1 Week of Term 4 on Tuesday 14th
October 2014.

Little Athletics is held on Tuesday evenings at the Ceduna
Area School oval at 5pm and ages range from 4 to 16
years. The first meet is our ‘Come and Try’, $3.00 fee
applies and if you decide to continue this fee will be
deducted off your registration for 2014/2015 season.
Parent support is paramount to the success of little
athletics and all athletes must be accompanied by a parent
or guardian to assist in the running of the night.
Many hands are needed to run a program and the last few
years have seen excellent numbers of parents coming out
and supporting the children.
We look forward to seeing all the old faces and hopefully
lots of new ones this season to keep our membership
numbers increasing.

Little athletics is a fun non-competitive environment for
the family. We focus on developing children of all abilities
by promoting positive attitudes and a healthy lifestyle
through a family and community involvement in athletic
related activities.
Our annual away meet for the Eyre Regional Games will be
held in Wudinna the date is still to be advised, this is a
great opportunity for our athletes to compete against
quality competition increasing their chance of personal
bests and state representation.
