Dear Parents/ Guardians,
Parent/ Teacher interviews for this term will be held

on Tuesday 10 and Wednesday 11 of March from
3.30pm to 7.30pm.
To book an interview you will need to access our
online booking system at the following web address
http://www.schoolinterviews.com.au and use the
following event code GBCUM to access the booking
system that can be completed in three easy steps.
The booking system will be activated on Monday
nd
th
2 of March and close Tuesday 10 of March.
Next week all parents and caregivers
have been invited into the school to
meet with teachers to discuss their
child’s educational needs for this year. We always strive for
positive partnerships between the school, the student and
the home so that we can provide the best learning
opportunities possible.
If by some chance you did not get an interview time or were
otherwise engaged and weren’t able to attend on either of
these two nights please contact the school to make an
alternative time.
It is really important that we work together in the best
interests of your child’s learning. If you have missed this
opportunity you may contact your child’s teacher to arrange
an alternative time or to see how we can best communicate
about your child’s progress. Hopefully everyone has been
able to successfully access our online booking system.

R-5 Sports Day Friday 28 February
Last Friday we were able to hold our R-5 Sports Day in fine
but warm weather. It is always great to see so many of our
students participating in the day’s events with a very
positive spirit.
It was pleasing to see so many parents and friends in
support of our students and getting involved in the events.
Well done to Murat for winning the day and to all students
who participated with such good spirit through the day.
Murat – 1430 pts
Sinclair – 1392 pts
Davenport – 1126 pts
Thank you to Mr Jansen, Ms Bawden, The Year 10 students

Bus Reps:
As we do every year we remind those of you who have
children who travel on any of our school buses as to the
process if there is a danger, such as a bushfire, on any of our
bus routes. While we will use a variety of avenues to contact
parents that would be affected, including SMS generated
from the school, we also rely on our network of Parent Bus
Representatives for each bus route which are:
Asha Price, Tesha Kuguna, Charli Seneca & Emily Stinear
enjoying the R-5 Sportsday.
Chinta –Mr Daryl Bubner
Denial Bay – Ms Joy Welshman
Konnibba / Charra – Ms Diane Irvine
Mudamuckla – Mr Gerard Lynch
Penong – Ms Andrea Baldock
Smoky Bay – Ms Deanna Blumson

“Winners are Grinners”
In the Middle School we have
selected our SRC team for 2015.
Students in each home group were
nominated to be representatives.
They prepared a written application
which they presented to their peers
and classes then voted in their
representatives.
Nominated
students
found
an
understanding of high modality words and persuasive
language used in Exposition writing to be of use throughout
this process, reflecting the benefit of the explicit Literacy
instruction that we value in the Middle School.
Our SRC representatives for 2015 in the Middle School are:
Year 6: Danny Duregon, Ruby Lee, Jayden Wakefield,
Hamayel Abaid, Nonnel Lennon-Gray
Year 7: Kayla Gurney, Ella Halbert, Harlee Chandler, Lucia
Franks, Kenzie Perry, Chase Kelly-Scott
Year 8: Aiden Elyward, Rebecca Haynes, Blae Dunn,
Taleah Haseldine, Shakiah Newchurch
Year 9: Josh An, Jordan Price, Reyner Clarke, Jackson
Brown, Kieyah Dunn
Our Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson are Jordan Price
and Reyner Clarke.
The Middle School SRC were inducted at Week 5’s
assembly, with Mayor Allan Suter and Governing Council
Chairperson Tracey Gurney in attendance to present
certificates. Our Chairperson Jordan and ViceChairperson Reyner spoke about what an honour it is to
be leading our Representative Council this year. The R-12
SRC as a whole also presented a video outlining the traits
that some school community members believe make
positive leaders.
Our MS SRC leaders also identified some agreed upon
areas for focus in the Middle School this year, these
include:
• Working to promote the canteen and menu
• Access to drinking water for students
• Making sure that class meetings run regularly
and students have their say in the Middle School
• Getting out into the community as an SRC group
• Reducing rubbish in the yard
• Getting some lunchtime activities up and
running with teacher support, particularly
focusing on gender inclusive activities
I am looking forward to working with such a motivated
and enthusiastic group of students this year!

As a kidsMatter school we receive a lot of information
about various programs to support students. The
information below is one of these programs
recommended by KidsMatter and is a support service for
students with anxiety.
The BRAVE Program is a fun, interactive, online program
for the prevention and treatment of childhood and
adolescent anxiety. The programs are free, and provide
ways for children and teenagers to better cope with their
worries. There are also programs for parents.
BRAVE has been specially designed to teach young
people the skills they need to reduce their anxiety and to
cope with stressful situations.
Children and parents can log on to BRAVE Self-Help at
any time, from anywhere and can complete sessions
without needing to visit a health professional. The
program can be completed at the child’s own pace, and
it’s most often helpful if a parent, guardian or support
person completes the parent version as well.
There are 2 programs in each age group, one for children
(aged 8-12 years) and one for parents and one for teenagers
aged 12 – 17 years old and one for parents of teenagers
aged 12-17 years old. Any child or teenager who worries
about things will find the program useful. Parents of these
children or teens wanting to learn more about how to help
their child or teenager overcome worries will benefit by
completing the program. Students and their parents can do
the program on their own, or together.
The BRAVE-ONLINE program was developed by a team of
researchers who have over 15 years’ experience working in
the field of child anxiety. Members include Dr Caroline
Donovan and Professor Susan Spence, from the School of
Psychology and Behavioural Basis of Health at Griffith
University, in collaboration with Dr Sonja March at The
University of Southern Queensland, Professor Justin Kenardy
at The University of Queensland and Dr Jane Coleman.
Students can complete as little or as much of the program as
they want and at a time that suits and it is recommended to
do at least one session a week
(approximately 20 to 30
minutes). The sessions are
completed in order and once
finished students can return to
do the Booster sessions when
they feel like some reminders
of the skills learnt.
