Creating and Translating Language Copies

AEM provides several tools for managing web sites that you create in multiple languages. To manage
multilingual web sites, create language copies of your site and then translate the content. A language copy
is a copy of an existing site that is to be translated to another language. The pages of the language copy
use a specific naming convention to indicate the langauge of the content. Language copies are comprised of
branches (trees) of pages, just like the originating site.
Your website must use the following structure:
• The web site has a single page as the root.
• Each child page is the root page of a language copy.
• The name of the child page is the language code.
The sample Geometrixx Demo Site illustrates this structure.
Creating a Language Copy
Create the root page of a language copy for a site so that you can then add content for that language. To
create the language copy you create a page below the root page of the site and specify a title, the language
of the page, and for the Name property you specify the language code. The language code must be in the
format of <language-code> or<language-code>_<country-code>, for example en, en_US, en_us, en_GB,
en_gb.
• The supported language code is lower-case, two-letter code as defined by ISO-639-1
• The supported country code is lower-case or upper-case, two-letter code as defined by ISO 3166
After you create the language copy, you can either generate machine-translated content for the copy or
manually translate content for the copy:

• Manual translation: See Managing the Translation of Your Language Branches
For examle, the sample Geometrixx Outdoors site includes only the English language copy. To generate
content in French, you would first create a French language copy below the Geometrixx Outdoors site:
• Title: French
• Language: French
• Name: fr
The following procedure uses the touch-optimized UI to create a language copy of a web site.

On the rail, click or tap Sites.
Click or tap the site for which you want to create a language copy.
For example, to create a language copy of the Geometrixx Outdoors site, you would click or tap
Geometrixx Outdoors Site.
Click or tap the Create icon, and then click or tap Create Page.

Select the page template and then click or tap Next.
Type a title, and then click or tap the Advanced tab.
Select the language of the language copy and in the Name field type the country
code in the format of <language-code> or <language-code>_<country-code>, for
example en, en_US, en_us, en_GB, en_gb.

Click or tap Create. In the confirmation dialog box, click or tap either Done to return to the Sites
console, or Open Page to open the language copy.
The following procedure uses the classic UI to create a language copy of a site.

In the Websites console, in the Websites tree, select the root page of the site. (http://localhost:4502/
siteadmin#)
Add a new child page that represetns the language version of the site:
1. Click New > New Page.
2. In the dialog, specify the Title and the Name. The Name needs to be in the format of <languagecode> or <language-code>_<country-code>, for example en, en_US, en_us, en_GB, en_gb.
• The supported language code is lower-case, two-letter code as defined by ISO-639-1
• The supported country code is lower-case or upper-case, two-letter code as defined by ISO
3166

In the Websites console, in the Websites tree, select the root page of the site.
In the Tools menu, select Language Copy.
The Language Copy dialog displays a matrix of available language versions and web pages. An x in a
language column means that the page is available in that language.

To copy an existing page or page tree to a language version, select the cell for that page in the
language column. Click the arrow and select the type of copy to create.
In the following example, the equipment/sunglasses/irian page is being copied to the French language
version.

Click OK to close the dialog.
In the next dialog, click Yes to confirm the copy.
SEEING THE STATUS OF LANGUAGE COPIES
The touch-optimized UI provides a References panel that shows a list of language copies that have been
created for a page.
The following procedure uses the touch-optimized UI to open the References panel for a page.

On the Sites console, select a page of the site and then click or tap the References icon.

In the references panel, click or tap Language Copies. The Language Copies panel shows the
language copies of the web site.
Machine-Translating Page Content
Use machine translation to translate web page content into different languages. When your website consists
of several language copies, one language copy is the source to translate, and the translated content
becomes the pages of other language copies.
AEM enables you to update translated pages as the source content changes over time:
• Create an initial translation to generate new pages for language copies. See Machine-Translating One
Or More Pages.
• Update the translation when the content of the source page changes. See Updating Translated Content.
The Languge Copies area of the References panel is the control center for managing the translation
process. To initiate the translation and monitor the status, you use the Languge Copies area. The panel
shows, for each language copy, the title of the page, the language of the page, and the status for machinetranslations.
NOTE
To use machine translation, your AEM administrator must have integrated AEM with a translation
provider.

MACHINE-TRANSLATING ONE OR MORE PAGES
Translate one or more pages of a language copy of your website to generate pages for other language
copies of your website. The machine translation service that is configured for your pages performs the
translation.
To generate the translated pages, you select the source page to translate and indicate whether the child
pages are also translated.The folder structure of the source language copy is duplicated in the targeted
language copy:
• When you specify that child pages are translated, the structure of the source pages is duplicated in the
translation language copy.
• When you specify that only the source page is translated, no child pages are created in the translation
language copy.
• When the translation language copy does not include the parent or further ancestors of the source page,
the parent page or ancestors are copied to the language copy and translated.
For example, the path of a source page to translate to French is /content/geometrixx-outdoors/en/seasonal/
summer/apparel. The French language copy includes only the /content/geometrixx-outdoors/fr page. The
path of the translated apparel page is /content/geometrixx-outdoors/fr/seasonal/summer/apparel. The /
content/geometrixx-outdoors/fr/seasonal and /content/geometrixx-outdoors/fr/seasonal/summer pages are
translated copies of the English pages.
When you perform the translation, the Languge Copies area of the References panel indicates that the
translation is being performed.
When the translation is complete, the status indicates when the content was last changed.
Before you tranlsate, you need to have created the language copy in the language in which you are
translating the content. Also, your administrator must have configured your website to use a Machine
Translation provider. The following procedure uses the touch-optimizied UI to translate web pages for the
first time.

On the Sites console, select the page that you want to translate and then click or tap the References
icon.

In the references panel, click or tap Language Copies. The Language Copies panel shows the
language copies of the selected page.

Click or tap Create & Translate and then select the language copies for which you want to generate
translated content. To translate the child pages, select Select All Sub Pages.

In the Update Language Copies area, click or tap Start.
Refresh the page to see updates to the status of the translation.
UPDATING TRANSLATED CONTENT
Update the machine-translated content of a page after changes have been made to the source page.
Updating machine-translated content enables you to review and edit the translation before approving its use.
When you update the translated language copy, a workflow automatically performs the following tasks:
1. A launch is created for the pages of the language copy.
2. The launch copy of the pages are machine-translated.

3. The launch copy is made available for you to review and edit.
After you approve the translated content, you promote the launch so that the content is moved to the
language copy of the website. The Languge Copies area of the References panel indicates that the
translation is complete and you can review the launch copy.
You can update only the source page or also update all of the child pages. The following procedure uses the
touch-optimized UI to update machine-translated content.

On the Sites console, select the source page that contains the updated content that you want to
translate and then click or tap the References icon.
To update only the source page (and not the children) of a single language copy, click or tap the
language copy and then click or tap Update.

To update one or more language copies with the option of updating child pages, select Language
copies and then deselect the language copies that you do not want to update.

Click or tap Update Language Copies to reveal the related options and commands:
• To translate only the selected page and not the child pages, deselect Select All Sub-pages.
• To log a comment about the translation action, type a comment in the text box.

REVIEWING AND PROMOTING TRANSLATED CONTENT
After you update the translation of a language copy, review the content, make changes if necessary, and
then promote the content.

Select the updated page in a language copy, click or tap the References icon, then click or tap
Language Copies.
Click or tap the language copy to review.

Click or tap Launch to reveal the launch-related commands.

To open the launch copy of the page to review and edit the content, click Open Page.
After you have reviewed the content and made necessary changes, to promote the launch copy click
Promote.
On the Promote Launch page, specify which pages to promote and then click or tap Promote.

Managing the Translation of Language Copies
When your website consists of several language copies and when you create a new page in your reference
language copy, you can start a translation workflow that automatically creates new pages in the language
branches of your choice and helps you translate the pages by displaying side-by-side the page to be
translated and the reference page.
This procedure uses the classic UI to start the translation workflow and how to display the reference page
beside the page that needs to be translated.
The website must have at least two language copies.

In the Websites tab create a new page in your reference language branch, for example, English.
Open the new page and add the desired text.
In the Sidekick, open the Workflow tab, then expand the Translation group:
1. Check the language branch(es) into which you would like to have a new page created.
2. In the Workflow drop-down menu, select Translation.

The reference page is being copied into the selected language branch(es).

Activate the reference page. A new version of the page is created.
Open the page that needs to be translated. Edit the text that has been copied from the reference page
and translate it. Save your changes.
Open the reference page and add new content to it.
Activate the reference page. A new version of the page is created.
Open the page that needs to be translated.
In the Sidekick, open the Workflow tab, then expand the Translation group. Here you will see the
changes that have been made in the reference page since a specified version. Select a particular
version and click Show Side-By-Side. Now, in the right pane you will see a diff of the reference page's
latest content vs. the version you selected.
NOTE
The Show Side-By-Side button is only shown when the page is opened together with
the Content Finder.

The reference page is displayed to the right of the page that needs to be translated. The text that
has been added since the selected version is green, removed text is red with a strike through it and
modified text is highlighted yellow.
The reference page is only displayed and cannot be edited.

On the left side, edit and translate the text. Save your changes.
To close the view of the reference page, click Hide in the Sidekick.
Repeat previous steps every time new content is added to the reference page and needs to be translated in
one or more language branches.
