Wattad said.
Wattad described the State of Israel as a
robust constitutional democracy and the only
stable country in the Middle East. He praised
his country’s Supreme Court as among “the
best Western supreme courts in the world.”
He cited examples from the summer, of
Arab citizens of Israel being fired from their
jobs for speaking out against the armed conflict with Hamas. Some of those cases went
to court – in Israel, unlike the United States,
people can directly petition the Supreme
Court and have their cases heard – and the
Court ruled in favor of the plaintiffs, who had
their jobs restored.
Conversely, Wattad said that Arab citizens of Israel “sometimes make mishmash of
their identities,” thus creating problems for
themselves.
He described his own identity as a combination of Arab nationality and Israeli citizenship.
“It’s one thing to support your nationality,” Wattad said, “but you have to understand,
once you hold the citizenship of a state, it has
meaning. And, meaning is reality.”
He continued, “Reality means that in
times of war, practice your rights, your constitutional rights. Speak up. … But, you have
to be very sensitive, as well.”
“Both the Arabs and the Jewish people inside of Israel have to be sensitive. The Jews
have to understand that we are Arab nationals,” Wattad said. “The Arabs, as well, have
to understand that there is a Jewish state. …
“If we understand this sensitive relationship between the possible clash between nationality and citizenship, we might become a
better country,” he said.
In a similar way that Jews in Israel have
nowhere else to go, Arabs who are Israeli
citizens, who aren’t accepted by neighboring
Arab states because of their Israeli citizenship, are in the same position, Wattad observed.
The legal scholar believes that the State
of Israel is facing mounting internal challenges. He said the burden is on the citizenry.
“We have to take our future in our hands,”
Wattad said. “And when I say, ‘We,’ I say Israelis as Arabs and Jews.
“I blame the State of Israel and I blame
the Arab citizens of the State of Israel for not
collaborating together. It’s one thing that all
Arabs who live in Israel are a part of the Arab
nation. But, it’s a great privilege that we also
hold Israeli citizenship,” he said.
“Despite all the differences that exist between Israelis – Jews and Arabs – there is a
[shared] Israeli identity,” he said.
To understand each other, biases must be
put aside, and people must learn to listen to
the other side, he concluded.
Wattad’s Houston appearance was hosted
by Houston Hillel for an audience of young
adults. The event was co-sponsored by AJC
Access Houston, Moishe House, Houston
Hillel and the Jewish Federation of Greater
Houston’s Jerome Robinson Family Young
Adult Division.

Arts Fair, to so many more meaningful activities. This is one of my

Project locations for this year’s
Mitzvah Day include Jewish Family Service’s TLC Project, the Center for Success and Independence,
Texas Children’s Hospital, Seven
Acres Jewish Senior Care Services,
Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center Oliver Lapin Family Day
preparation, Hermann Park Conservancy and Jewish Family Service’s Celebration Company. New
this year, there are volunteer opportunities available at the ERJCC for
families with young children. Project captains are Hannah Elovich,
Andrea and Rob Fineman, Eleanor
Gould, Ilyse Kornblau and Jonathan
Rosenberg.
“My friends and peers have a
desire and willingness to serve the
community, but doing so is challenging on a regular basis. Mitzvah
Day allows us to get out for a few
hours and serve amazing organizations and people who need our
help,” said Dubin.
“These projects allow us to
make a real difference in a short
amount of time.
“We hope to expose participants to meaningful nonprofits
and inspire them to find their place
within the community.”
Participants will meet at the
Jewish Federation of Greater Houston boardroom at 8:30 a.m. for coffee and bagels, then disperse to
their project assignments.
When the tasks are complete,
volunteers will meet at noon at
Champps Houston Uptown, 1121
Uptown Park Blvd., for a wrap-up
party and to watch the Houston
Texans play the Philadelphia Eagles.
YAD Mitzvah Day 2014 is made
