Music
Boyan Ensemble of Kiev
Last year the wonderful Boyan Ensemble of Kiev sang in St
Mary’s, Kirkby Lonsdale for the first time: the concert was a
sell-out success, the audience were deeply moved by their awe
inspiring performance.
Their visit this year will be especially poignant, given the
momentous events which have engulfed their country.
We are particularly fortunate that the tour is going ahead and
delighted that local audiences can again experience a choir
supreme in its field, renowned for a vast range of dynamics,
precise harmonies and low, low bottom notes.

Julius Caesar
An abridged version of Shakespeare’s play – performed as part
of the Shakespeare Schools Festival.
A Heritage Lottery Funded project to commemorate the
centenary of WW1
Then and Now Stories is a specially
commissioned play, written by and
compiled by local playwright Louise
Gallagher, performed by local actors and
featuring local stories.
Come and joins us, listen to the stories
and maybe share some of your own. Over
the last six months project director Jayne Davies has been
working in schools and in the community to collect stories
about WW1 and bring this performance to life.
Theatre in the Quarter presents
Silent Night at
Arkholme Village Hall
The Western Front, 24 December 1914.
Along the miles of trenches, wet and
freezing men face each other in stalemate.
Then, over the temporary halt in gunfire,
voices from both sides of No Man’s Land begin to talk, sing and
break the silent night…
Chester-based Theatre in the Quarter present Silent Night – the
incredible story of events leading up to the Christmas Eve
Truce of 1914 – part of the WW1 Centenary commemoration.
At once moving and entertaining, Silent Night brings to life the
human stories of a group of Cheshire soldiers and the families
they left behind. Against a backdrop of archive images, original
music and popular songs from the era, Silent Night vividly
portrays events surrounding this historic moment.

Arts Award
Arts Award is run at Queen Elizabeth School. Bronze, Silver and
Gold Award run weekly, after school.
Young people evidence their work in their portfolios using a
range of different media, including written work, feedback
from others, photos, videos and websites. When teaching
others, Bronze and Silver pupils usually teach each other within
the context over a space of a few months. Events are accessed
within and outside the setting, and extensive use is made of
the Kirkby Lonsdale Arts Scene resource, which highlights
events the young people can attend. Many of these events are
also discounted or free to young people participating in our
Arts Award programme.
They gain many skills from the experience, most of all
confidence in their art form and confidence when teaching
others. The young people who complete their Arts Award
with us really get a feel for the wider opportunities that are
offered to them within the arts and they put in place strong
expectations for themselves, for their futures within their art
forms.
